In OBS, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. Shuffle can vary the order, but it is not a documented guarantee that the last and first items will differ.
First, identify which playlist you mean
YouTube’s playlist repeat control affects playback for someone watching a YouTube playlist. YouTube Help says, “The playlist will repeat continuously,” but that describes viewer playback—not the media sequence OBS sends into a live broadcast. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.
To rotate videos as the content of a livestream, configure the playback source in the encoder. For multiple local media files in OBS, that source is VLC Video.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Add the source: In the scene that will carry the playlist, add a VLC Video source. Add the media files you want to play to its playlist. The regular Media Source is intended for individual media playback; VLC Video is the playlist-style source described in the cited guides.
- Enable looping: Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should continue after the final item. OBS’s VLC source interface includes this control. OBS Studio VLC source labels.
- Choose whether to shuffle: Enable Shuffle only if you want the playlist order to vary. Shuffle changes ordering, but neither the interface label nor the available guidance establishes a guarantee against the last item being followed by the opening item at the wrap.
- Check visibility behavior: If you hide the playlist source by switching scenes and later show it again, review its source visibility behavior. OBS exposes options labeled for stopping or restarting, pausing or unpausing, and always playing. Their precise behavior and default selection can vary by version or configuration; verify the selected option in your OBS installation.

Make the wraparound transition safe
If the opening video must not immediately play again, control the boundary rather than trusting shuffle. Arrange the sequence so its last item is different from its first, then review the full cycle—including the final-to-first transition. This gives you a checkable condition: the two adjacent items at the wrap are not the same video. If you change the playlist later, check the boundary again.

OBS forum discussions include user reports that shuffle works across a playlist order and may not reshuffle at every cycle. Those are community observations, not an official guarantee of shuffle behavior. OBS Project Forums: VLC Playlist Shuffle.
Optional community-reported reshuffling method
An OBS forum reply describes refreshing a VLC source with the Directory Watch Media plugin to reshuffle a playlist. This is older community guidance, not a built-in guarantee. Check whether the plugin is compatible with your OBS version and follow its current instructions before relying on it.
