To send VirtualDJ to YouTube Live, use VirtualDJ’s video broadcast mode: get a stream key from YouTube Studio, paste it into VirtualDJ’s Broadcast settings, and start the broadcast. This is separate from VirtualDJ’s Internet Radio Server mode, which sends audio to an Icecast or Shoutcast host rather than to a YouTube video page.
The steps below cover the broadcast connection. “Radio playlist” can mean different playlist or continuous-play setups; the available documentation does not establish a particular playlist automation procedure, so it should not be assumed that connecting YouTube also configures unattended playlist playback.
Choose the right VirtualDJ broadcast mode
VirtualDJ’s Broadcast settings distinguish several destinations and workflows. For a YouTube livestream, choose Video and YouTube. The other modes serve different purposes:
- Video: broadcasts to social platforms, including YouTube.
- Computer audio: broadcasts audio and provides a listening link.
- Internet Radio Server: connects to a radio-server host, with VirtualDJ listing Icecast in OGG format and Shoutcast in MP3 format.
- Podcast: records to VirtualDJ’s servers.
VirtualDJ’s manual says its radio-server mode requires a Pro Infinity or Pro Monthly license; that requirement is specific to the radio-server mode and should not be applied to the YouTube video route. See the VirtualDJ Broadcast manual.

Prepare YouTube Live and get the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream, enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- In the Stream tab, create a stream or select an existing one, then retrieve its stream key.
- Keep the key private. It allows an encoder such as VirtualDJ to connect to your channel’s broadcast.
YouTube’s current workflow uses YouTube Studio and the Live Control Room. VirtualDJ’s guide uses older “live dashboard” and “Encoder Setup” wording, so its screenshots or labels may not match the current YouTube interface. Refer to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current steps.
Connect VirtualDJ to the YouTube stream
- In VirtualDJ, open Settings > Broadcast.
- Select Video as the broadcast type.
- Choose YouTube as the destination.
- Paste the stream key copied from YouTube Studio into the Stream Key field.
- Press START BROADCAST.
- Return to YouTube Studio. After a few seconds, check for the stream preview and confirm YouTube shows LIVE. Set or confirm the title and description there.

Test audio, bandwidth, and stream health
Run a private or otherwise suitable test before a public session, using audio and motion similar to the material you plan to stream. Confirm that the mix is audible in YouTube’s preview and monitor stream-health messages while live. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to and through Google’s servers.
Bitrate and internet speed are different checks
VirtualDJ’s YouTube guide gives approximate required upload speeds of 4–6 Mbps at 1080p, 2–4 Mbps at 720p, and about 1 Mbps at 360p. These are approximate figures from VirtualDJ, not guarantees for every network or setup. YouTube publishes separate recommended encoder video bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec; those settings are not interchangeable with a general internet speed-test result.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if adjusting encoder output. VirtualDJ’s direct-broadcast guide describes its own route; do not assume a separate hardware encoder is required.
What “radio playlist” does—and does not—establish
The broadcast setup above connects VirtualDJ to YouTube. It does not, by itself, identify which VirtualDJ playlist feature, queue behavior, or automation setting you mean by “radio playlist.” The cited VirtualDJ broadcast and audio-setup documentation does not specify a particular continuous-play recipe. Confirm your intended playlist behavior in VirtualDJ’s own playlist controls rather than assuming a setting or unattended-play feature.

For YouTube viewers, the destination is a video livestream even if the main content is a DJ mix. The direct procedure here does not require an external audio interface. VirtualDJ supports computer audio as well as USB sound cards and routing options such as master and headphone outputs. An interface is only worth adding if your routing needs require extra physical inputs, outputs, or a separate cue path; see the VirtualDJ Audio Setup manual.

- When the session is over, stop broadcasting in VirtualDJ.
- Check YouTube Studio for the resulting stream and any copyright or publication notices.
- Do not assume the replay will remain available: VirtualDJ warns that YouTube analyzes the stopped stream and may block it, mute it, or prevent publication.
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not override copyright review or guarantee that a particular replay will be published. A license to play or own a recording does not, by itself, establish permission to livestream or archive it. Review the rights for the music and other material you use.

Troubleshooting common connection problems
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm that the broadcast type is Video, YouTube is selected, and the stream key is copied into the correct field. Check the YouTube Live Control Room for connection or stream-health messages.
- The key is rejected or the wrong stream receives the broadcast: Retrieve the key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio and replace the value in VirtualDJ. Treat keys as private; if one has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream controls.
- The audio is missing or routed incorrectly: Verify VirtualDJ’s selected audio source and output in Settings > Audio. Test the master output first; configure a USB sound card only if you need separate physical routing.
- The connection is unstable: Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and available upload bandwidth. Compare the encoder’s resolution and bitrate requirements with the actual connection; a speed test alone does not confirm stable streaming performance.
- The replay is muted, blocked, or absent: Check YouTube Studio for copyright notices. VirtualDJ specifically warns that post-stream copyright analysis can affect publication.
- The playlist does not continue as expected: The broadcast connection instructions do not define VirtualDJ playlist automation. Check the playlist or automix controls for the behavior you intend rather than changing the YouTube destination settings.
