BUTT’s manual documents Icecast and SHOUTcast destinations, not YouTube’s encoder workflow, so OBS is the documented bridge between the two.
Can BUTT stream directly to YouTube Live?
BUTT is an audio encoder for sending microphone or line input to an Icecast or SHOUTcast server. Its manual says it is not a server itself and is not intended to automatically stream a set of audio files. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead requires a YouTube server URL and stream key in the streaming encoder. The documented route is therefore BUTT audio into OBS, then OBS output to YouTube. This does not establish that every possible third-party plugin or bridge is impossible; it means a direct YouTube workflow is not documented by the sources here.
For a radio-style YouTube broadcast, OBS also needs a visual scene: a still image, text, video, display, or camera source. A live audio feed by itself is not the complete video stream YouTube receives.
What you need before connecting the apps
- BUTT configured to produce the audio you want to broadcast.
- OBS Studio installed and a scene ready for the broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, and the stream URL and key for the intended stream.
- An audio capture route supported by your operating system and visible to OBS.
Exact device names and menu options vary by operating system and software version. OBS documents Audio Input/Output Capture on Windows and macOS, and ALSA/PulseAudio sources on Linux. Its per-application audio source is documented for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11; if that method does not capture BUTT, use a virtual audio device or another available capture route.

Route BUTT audio through OBS to YouTube
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the intended stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in a public scene, screenshot, or recording.
- Build an OBS scene. In OBS, create a scene and add a visual source such as an image, text, video, display capture, or camera. For an audio-led broadcast, a static image with any needed title or schedule is sufficient as a visual source; OBS still sends a video stream.
- Add BUTT’s audio to OBS. Choose the route that matches your system and what OBS can see:
- Application audio capture: On Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, add an application audio capture source and select BUTT if it is available. This can isolate the app, but OBS notes that some application audio may require a different method.
- Audio device capture: Add an audio input or output capture source and select the device carrying BUTT’s sound. On Linux, choose the appropriate ALSA or PulseAudio source.
- Virtual audio device: If direct app capture is unavailable or fails, route BUTT’s output to a virtual audio device, then select that device as an OBS audio input. OBS documents this as an alternative for application audio that does not work with direct capture; setup details depend on the operating system.
- Confirm the signal. Play or produce audio through BUTT and watch the OBS audio mixer. The meter for the selected source should move. If it does not, check BUTT’s output device, the device selected in OBS, and the operating system’s audio routing.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS streaming settings, choose YouTube if it is offered, or enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when the encoder offers it and YouTube’s secure endpoint is supported.
- Start and verify the stream. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health, and then click Go live there. Test the complete audio and video path before a public broadcast.
Audio capture routes: which one should you try?

No one route is best for every system. Choose based on operating-system support, whether BUTT’s output reaches the capture source, and whether the signal stays reliable without echo.
OBS and YouTube settings to verify
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum; and RTMPS where the encoder supports it. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not settings that turn BUTT itself into a YouTube-compatible video encoder. Choose resolution and bitrate based on your output and available connection rather than assuming one value fits every system.

- Check OBS’s audio mixer for a moving meter before streaming.
- Listen to the YouTube preview when possible, not only to local playback.
- Avoid capturing the same device both as a global audio device and as a scene source unless you intend to; duplicate capture can create echo.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS.
Troubleshooting: no audio, echo, or no YouTube preview
OBS meters do not move
- Confirm BUTT is actively producing audio and is sending it to the device or application selected in OBS.
- In OBS, recheck the selected capture device. If using a virtual audio device, verify that BUTT outputs to it and OBS captures that same device.
- If direct application capture is not available or does not work, try device capture or virtual-device routing.
YouTube receives silence, but OBS meters move
- Check that the active OBS audio source is included in the scene’s stream mix and is not muted.
- Listen to the YouTube preview and inspect YouTube’s stream-health status. Local monitoring alone does not confirm what YouTube receives.
- Run a short test with representative audio before the scheduled broadcast.
The broadcast has echo or doubled audio
Look for the same physical or virtual device being captured both globally in OBS and again as a scene source. Disable the duplicate route or keep only the intended capture source, then test again.
YouTube shows no preview or cannot start the stream
- Verify that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the correct YouTube stream.
- Check that OBS has started sending, then allow the YouTube preview and health indicators to update before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream.
- If the key may be wrong or exposed, generate or copy the correct key in Live Control Room and update OBS.
The stream drops or audio stops later
Check OBS’s connection and audio meters, then check YouTube stream health. If OBS remains connected but its audio meter falls, investigate BUTT’s output and the selected capture route; if the encoder connection drops, recheck the network and stream configuration before restarting.

A radio feed being live, or a track being available to play, does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use BUTT to stream an existing playlist to YouTube?
BUTT’s manual says it is not intended to automatically stream a set of audio files. The workflow in this article is for routing live audio into OBS.
Does OBS capture BUTT the same way on every operating system?
No. The available application and device capture sources differ by operating system, and virtual-device routing may be needed if direct capture does not work.
