Synology’s official documentation describes Audio Station as a music-library and playback tool; its documented YouTube broadcast feature is in Surveillance Station and is for camera video, not music playlists. For a NAS-based broadcast, you need a separately chosen and verified encoder that can turn your playlist into a continuous audiovisual stream and send it to YouTube.
If you do not want a home encoder and network connection to run continuously, you can instead prepare complete video files and use a cloud service. The choice depends on whether you want to maintain and verify the local broadcast chain yourself.
What the Synology NAS can—and cannot—do by itself
Synology documents Audio Station as a way to organize a music library, create playlists, and play music through browsers and supported devices. That makes a NAS useful as the source and storage location for a music program, but Synology’s Audio Station specifications do not establish that Audio Station can publish a continuous music broadcast to YouTube. Synology Audio Station specifications for DSM 7.4
Synology’s YouTube broadcast documentation concerns Surveillance Station. It describes sending live camera streams to YouTube using H.264—not encoding an Audio Station playlist as a music radio stream. An older Surveillance Station guide shows a camera-selection and YouTube RTMP setup, but it is documentation for version 8.2 and should not be treated as a current music-broadcast recipe. The practical architecture is therefore separate roles: the NAS holds the music; a compatible encoder reads the files, combines the music with video, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube. You could also use a cloud service that plays prepared video files. Do not install an encoder or container image on the assumption it supports your NAS model, DSM version, continuous playlists, or automatic restart: verify those points for the exact software and hardware before relying on it.
Choose the broadcast method
| Method | What stays running | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NAS or other local encoder | The encoder, NAS access, power, and a stable internet connection at the broadcast location. | Compatibility with your NAS model and DSM release; playlist and video support; recovery after encoder, NAS, power, or network restart; safe access to media files; and how YouTube stream credentials are stored. |
| Cloud-hosted playback | The cloud service handles playback and delivery after you upload the prepared video and configure the YouTube stream. | That the service accepts your video format and playlist plan, supports your intended YouTube setup, and clearly explains storage, billing, and recovery behavior. |
There is no current Synology-published music-to-YouTube encoder or tested restart-resilience recipe established here. Treat any third-party NAS package or container as an implementation to validate, not a guaranteed Synology feature. Synology’s support material notes that Container Manager replaced Docker for container management starting with DSM 7.2; that terminology does not establish that a particular encoder image works on a particular NAS. Plan the local NAS-to-YouTube workflow
The following is a setup plan, not a verified Synology application walkthrough. The exact encoder, settings, and recovery controls depend on the software you select; confirm them in that encoder’s documentation before going live.
- Check your rights first. Confirm that you have permission for every recording and visual in the planned program, including the rights needed for the territories where viewers may watch. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. See YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions.
- Organize the NAS library. Keep the intended tracks in a dedicated folder or playlist, with filenames and ordering that make interruptions or track changes easy to identify. Keep a separate record of track ownership, licenses, permissions, and any territorial or attribution conditions. Audio Station can help organize and play the library; it is not the confirmed YouTube encoder.
- Select and verify a separate encoder. Confirm that it can read the NAS files safely, play a playlist continuously, create a valid video stream with the audio, and publish to YouTube. Check compatibility with your exact NAS model and DSM release if it will run on the NAS. If the encoder runs on another computer, confirm that it can access the NAS media and that the computer will remain powered and connected.
- Create the YouTube live setup. In YouTube Studio, create the live stream or event and obtain the ingest details the encoder requests. Enter the stream key only in the intended encoder interface; handle it like a password, do not publish it, and replace it if it is exposed. The encoder’s terminology and required fields may differ.
- Configure the continuous program. Build the playlist, add the visuals, and set the encoder to repeat the program if that is how you intend to run it. Confirm how the software handles the end of a file, a missing track, a full playlist cycle, and a temporary loss of access to the NAS. Use the encoder’s documented YouTube-compatible output settings rather than guessing at resolution, bitrate, or keyframe interval; no specific values are established for an unselected encoder here.
- Test before making it a 24/7 channel. Run a private or unlisted test, if available in your YouTube setup, and check audio, video, track transitions, continuity, and the broadcast from a separate viewer device. Then test the failure cases you can safely reproduce: encoder restart, NAS restart, internet interruption, and power recovery. Confirm whether the stream resumes automatically or needs an operator to restart it.
- Decide what happens to the live archive. Check the event’s archive settings and YouTube’s current handling for your channel. Do not assume a continuous stream will be archived or that the archive will remain available in the form you expect; keep a separate source copy of the program if you need one.
Clear music rights—and account for Content ID
Owning a CD, buying a download, or having permission to play a song privately does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it in a public YouTube livestream. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Requirements can depend on the works, rights holders, and territories involved, so obtain the relevant permissions and keep documentation before broadcasting. Rights clearance does not guarantee that YouTube will leave a stream uninterrupted. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder, warn the operator, or interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Its guidance also says that even licensed third-party content can be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve a claim with the relevant rights holder and follow YouTube’s instructions; do not assume that restarting the encoder will fix a rights issue. Keep the stream running: test the whole chain
A playlist is only one part of a 24/7 broadcast. The service must keep getting media, encode and deliver it, and recover appropriately after failures. Before treating a setup as always-on, test each part in the exact configuration you intend to use.

- Power: Verify that the NAS and any separate encoder restart after a power interruption, and determine whether the encoder resumes playback and reconnects to YouTube without manual action.
- Network: Test what happens when the home internet connection drops and returns. A NAS can remain healthy while the YouTube broadcast has stopped.
- Media access: Confirm that the encoder can still read the playlist after a NAS restart, permission change, or network-share interruption.
- Encoder recovery: Establish whether the chosen software retries a lost YouTube connection, resumes the playlist, and reports a failure you can act on. Do not infer recovery from a successful short test.
- Credentials: Restrict access to the YouTube stream key and avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, or shared configuration files.
- Monitoring: Decide who will notice a stopped stream and what they can do to restore it. “24/7” describes the intended schedule, not a guarantee that an untested home setup cannot fail.
Or let it run in the cloud
