You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS automatically, but that does not make OBS a proven, dependable unattended streaming service: the PC must remain on and able to run OBS, and you need to test and monitor what happens after a reboot, network interruption, or software update. What “without leaving the desktop open” means
With a Windows-and-OBS setup, you can automate starting the streaming application so you do not have to open the desktop and click OBS each time. The computer itself still has to be powered on and run the stream locally. Task Scheduler can launch applications and tasks; that alone does not establish that OBS will reconnect reliably or keep streaming unattended.
OBS Project community guidance describes scheduled or login-time launches as possible, while cautioning that OBS is not designed for noninteractive unattended streaming. Treat this as an automation approach to test on your own PC—not as a guaranteed set-and-forget service.
Check YouTube eligibility and audience settings first
Confirm that the channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to livestream. The stream also has to comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. These prerequisites do not establish that a broadcast can remain live indefinitely.

Decide accurately whether the stories are made for kids
YouTube identifies stories, songs, child-oriented language, characters, and intended audience as relevant factors when deciding whether content is made for kids. Stories can be a signal of child-directed content; the decision depends on the content and its audience, not simply the fact that it is a story. Creators worldwide are responsible for setting the audience designation accurately under applicable rules. YouTube advises seeking legal advice if you are unsure.
Plan for the features that change
For livestreams designated as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay, comments on live-stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may appear. Build the stream’s format and revenue expectations around those limits.

Prepare OBS and the story stream
Before automating startup, set up the stream manually and confirm that the intended material plays and reaches the correct YouTube channel. The exact OBS controls and launch parameters can vary by installation; the available guidance does not establish a version-specific configuration or a reliable unattended launch recipe.
- Prepare the media and OBS setup. Arrange the story videos and configure the OBS scene and profile you intend to use. Start OBS manually and confirm that the correct media and audio sources work as expected.
- Set the YouTube destination. In OBS, configure the intended YouTube streaming destination and stream key using the controls available in your installed version. Keep the key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, replace it through the account’s streaming controls and update OBS.
- Set the audience designation. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, choose the audience status that accurately reflects the content. Stories aimed at children may qualify as made for kids; do not choose a setting simply to retain chat or other features.
- Run a manual test. Start a test broadcast and check playback, picture, audio, destination, and audience settings. Confirm the archive and viewer-facing experience you expect before relying on an automated launch.
Schedule OBS to launch in Windows
Windows Task Scheduler provides a way to schedule an application or task, and OBS supports launch parameters. The combination can start OBS without someone clicking its icon, but Microsoft’s general Task Scheduler guidance does not guarantee OBS recovery, stream reconnection, or reliable operation without an interactive user session.

- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and create a task appropriate to your use. The exact labels and options can vary across Windows editions and versions.
- Choose a trigger such as a scheduled time or a user sign-in, according to how you want the application to start. A sign-in trigger is not the same as proving that OBS will run reliably in a noninteractive session.
- Add an action to start OBS. Select the OBS executable installed on your PC. OBS launch parameters may help select a profile or collection, but verify the correct syntax and behavior for your installed version rather than assuming a parameter will restore the entire stream state.
- Save the task and test it. Check that OBS opens the intended profile and media, and that the broadcast reaches YouTube as expected. Do not treat a successful app launch as proof that the live stream is healthy.
Test the failure cases before relying on automation
There is no established unattended configuration here that resolves the following cases. Test them on the actual Windows PC, OBS installation, network, and account you plan to use.
- Reboot: Restart the PC and confirm whether the task runs under the chosen trigger, OBS loads the intended setup, and the stream actually starts.
- Internet interruption: Interrupt and restore the connection during a test. Check whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube shows the broadcast as live again; do not assume Task Scheduler handles a dropped stream.
- Sleep, power, and sign-in: Check the PC’s power and sleep behavior and whether the chosen task trigger requires a signed-in user. The computer has to remain able to run the stream.
- Media and audio sources: Verify that video and audio continue playing after launch and that any files or sources OBS needs remain available.
- Updates and account changes: Re-test after Windows or OBS updates, or after changing the YouTube stream key or account settings. An application opening does not confirm the destination is still valid.
- Power or network failure: Consider whether your home power and internet can support the local setup. Backup power may be a reliability consideration, but no runtime can be assumed without sizing and testing the specific equipment.
A dedicated Windows mini PC is optional, not a requirement if you already have a suitable computer. No specific model, minimum hardware specification, or long-duration performance is established here; check the machine’s capabilities and test the actual workload before buying hardware for continuous use.
