You can keep prerecorded children’s videos streaming to YouTube from a headless Ubuntu Server by running an encoder as a systemd service. The reliable setup is more than a restart rule: enable YouTube Live, protect the stream key, test the encoder and network, set the audience accurately, monitor YouTube’s incoming stream, and keep a separate recording if you need a complete archive.
Check YouTube Live eligibility and prepare the stream
Before configuring Ubuntu, confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube currently requires streamers to be at least 16. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-stream eligibility requirements.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream configured for an encoder.
- Set the audience based on the actual content. If it is made for children, choose the made-for-kids setting; do not select a different audience merely to retain features.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key from Studio. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public repositories, command history, logs, and files readable by other users.
- Start the encoder and check the Studio Live Control Room preview and health indicators. A scheduled stream may require you to click Go live after the preview appears.
Prepare Ubuntu and the video pipeline
Install and test the encoder
Install an encoder package suitable for your Ubuntu release, then test that it can read every source file and produce usable video and audio. Exact package names, FFmpeg options, and systemd unit syntax vary with the Ubuntu release and encoder build; validate the executable path and configuration on the target server rather than copying an unverified command.
Use a dedicated unprivileged account for the streaming service. Put media in a directory that account can read and recordings in a directory it can write. If the playlist mixes formats, test each file and address mismatched dimensions, frame rates, audio formats, or damaged media before relying on unattended playback. Make the loop behavior and audio/video synchronization explicit in the encoder configuration.

Keep the stream key out of the unit file
Store the stream key in a root-owned configuration or environment file with restrictive permissions, and make it readable only by the service account and root as needed. Reference that configuration from the service instead of placing the secret directly in a public unit file or a script checked into source control. Review logs and process diagnostics to ensure the key is not printed.
Choose YouTube-compatible video settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the baseline, then test with the actual server, source material, and network. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the encoder settings to the stream configuration selected in Studio when manual settings are used. The official recommendations can change; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings before production.

Choose resolution and frame rate according to the material and the capacity you can sustain. Leave upload headroom rather than budgeting the full measured connection for the stream, and test during representative motion and audio. If the server’s CPU or available hardware encoder cannot maintain the selected output, lower the workload or choose a less demanding format and test again. A bitrate recommendation alone does not establish that a particular VPS, dedicated server, or home connection will remain stable.
Create and operate the systemd service
Use an explicit service definition
Create a unit that specifies the service user, working directory, executable, configuration, and restart policy. Use the actual paths and options validated on your Ubuntu release; there is no release-specific, tested FFmpeg unit or command established here. Configure systemd to start the service at boot, then inspect its state and logs with the unit name you chose:

journalctl -u your-stream.serviceA restart policy can bring an encoder process back after it exits unexpectedly. It does not correct a bad input file, expired or incorrect stream key, persistent network outage, or YouTube ingest problem. A feed can also freeze while the encoder process remains alive. A systemd-issued stop or restart is intentional and does not count as a process failure for restart behavior; do not treat the restart policy as a complete recovery system. Monitor the stream, not just the process
- Check systemd state and recent encoder progress.
- Inspect YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators for incoming video and audio.
- Periodically verify the public watch experience from a viewer’s perspective.
- If recording locally, confirm the file is growing and that the destination has free space.
A process-only watchdog can miss a stalled or silent feed. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends testing the encoder, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream; see YouTube’s streaming guidance.

Set the audience correctly for children’s content
When the stream is made for children, YouTube disables or restricts features including live chat, comments, notification reminders or bell features, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and personalized advertising. Contextual ads may still appear. Those changes affect interaction and revenue expectations, but they are not a reason to mislabel the audience. Review YouTube’s made-for-kids feature guidance and set the stream’s audience based on what it actually contains.

Do not assume a single 24-hour YouTube stream will produce one complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the full program matters, configure an independent local recording and verify it is being written. Plan disk capacity and retention around the recording format and how long you need to keep files; monitor free space so the recording destination does not fill silently. Troubleshoot common failures
