You can use a Raspberry Pi as a local playout and encoder host for a Punjabi folk music stream on YouTube Live: prepare your playlist and visual, create a YouTube broadcast, enter its server URL and private stream key in an encoder, then test the complete setup before relying on it. YouTube’s stream settings are clear, but the available documentation does not establish a Pi-specific 24/7 recipe or prove that a particular board and encoder will run continuously without failure. Plan for testing, music rights, interruptions, and YouTube’s under-12-hour archive limit.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi, power supply, microSD card, and a stable internet connection.
- Raspberry Pi OS and an encoder/playout setup capable of sending your chosen audio and video to YouTube Live. The exact Pi software configuration must be tested; the documentation cited here does not validate a specific continuous-encoding recipe.
- A playlist of recordings you are authorized to livestream, plus a visual such as album art, a still image, or a visualizer.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
For a current hardware example, Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, a microSD slot, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, and USB-C power input at 5 V/5 A. Its published 4Kp60 HEVC specification is for decoding; it does not establish a supported or tested 24/7 encoding profile. These are product specifications, not evidence of continuous-stream reliability. See the Raspberry Pi 5 product brief, updated 1 April 2026.
Prepare the Pi and storage
Use Raspberry Pi OS Lite if you do not need a desktop. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance recommends an SD card of at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5, with 5 V at 5 A as the recommended power level. The 8 GB minimum is for the OS guidance only; size storage separately for your music library and account for card endurance under your workload. See Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation.
Choose Ethernet or Wi-Fi
Use Ethernet if it is convenient at the Pi’s location: Pi 5 includes Gigabit Ethernet as well as dual-band Wi-Fi. A wired local link can avoid dependence on Wi-Fi quality, but neither option protects against power, router, or ISP failures. Choose the connection you can keep stable and test it under the conditions in which the stream will run.

Create a YouTube Live broadcast and protect its key
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as YouTube warns in its encoder setup guide.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast. YouTube’s exact screen labels can change, so follow the current on-screen flow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Treat the stream key as a private credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that broadcast. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public post.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube creates the live watch page when the encoder starts sending. For a scheduled stream, preview it in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
YouTube currently lists Gyre as a third-party cloud service for prerecorded-video 24/7 streams on its encoder help page. That listing does not establish a recommendation, endorsement, price, rights clearance, reliability benchmark, or Raspberry Pi audio-stream recipe.
Set encoder output to YouTube’s ingest guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the ingest target, then confirm that your specific Pi and encoder can sustain the settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and supported codecs including H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio. Its stereo audio guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Output target | YouTube-published guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended (YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026) |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended (YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026) |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps (YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds (YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026) |
These are YouTube’s ingest figures, not a measurement of your internet connection or proof that a Pi can encode the selected profile. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, doing a preflight stream with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast, and watching stream health and messages while live. A still-image music stream may have modest visual motion, but do not assume that makes a given resolution or encoding load safe: test the exact output you plan to use.
Test the full unattended setup before going public
The published material does not provide a tested Pi command line, media-playlist configuration, process supervisor, reconnect script, or notification system for this use. Treat those as setup-specific engineering decisions, not as guaranteed instructions. Before relying on the Pi overnight or for an extended broadcast, test the actual hardware, operating system, encoder, playlist, and connection together.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A broadcast intended to run around the clock therefore needs an explicit plan for stream transitions and archive expectations. One operational approach is to end a broadcast and begin a replacement before reaching the threshold, but YouTube’s cited instructions do not prescribe a restart cadence or validate automation on a Raspberry Pi. Test your chosen transition method and arrange a way to detect if the encoder stops sending.
Clear the Punjabi folk recordings before streaming
“Folk” or traditional describes a musical style or tradition; it does not establish that a particular modern recording is free to broadcast. The rights in the composition and the sound recording can be separate. Before adding a track, establish permission for livestreaming and, if relevant, the resulting archive or video-on-demand, monetization, and the territories where viewers may watch. Keep permission or license records for the actual playlist. No rights status for a particular Punjabi recording, composition, territory, or service is established here, so do not assume that a YouTube account, consumer music subscription, or traditional melody automatically clears a recording for a public stream.

YouTube states that livestream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; running a stream does not guarantee eligibility, ads, or revenue. Rights clearance remains a separate requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Local Raspberry Pi or a cloud service?
A Pi gives you a local playout host and direct control over the hardware, but its power, network, storage, software, and recovery are your responsibility. A cloud service can keep playback running without a computer at home, but compare its terms, supported content, costs, and rights implications before choosing one. YouTube’s listing of Gyre is not enough to establish those details for any service.

Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| You cannot start a first broadcast | Confirm live streaming is enabled and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as noted by YouTube. |
| YouTube receives no stream | Check the encoder’s server URL and private stream key, the network connection, and the encoder’s connection status in Live Control Room. Replace the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health reports problems | Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s recommended codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate guidance; measure upload speed and test at the exact planned settings. |
| Audio is missing or inconsistent | Check the selected audio source, file transitions, encoder audio codec, stereo sample rate and bitrate, then listen to a preflight stream rather than relying only on meters. |
| The broadcast ends or fails to resume after a disruption | Inspect power, router and ISP status, encoder process state, and YouTube’s live dashboard. A specific automatic recovery method is not established for the Pi setup described here, so define and test a manual or software recovery path. |
| A long stream does not produce the expected archive | Check the broadcast duration against YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive statement and plan shorter broadcast segments if archives matter. |
