To run a 24/7 rain and distant traffic ambience stream on YouTube, prepare a rights-cleared audio-and-video feed, connect an encoder to a YouTube Live stream, and keep the encoder and internet connection running while you monitor stream health. For a do-it-yourself setup, that means a computer or other encoder source must stay on. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish that one 24-hour session will be saved as a complete replay.
Choose how to make the ambience feed
Decide whether your rain and distant traffic will come from a live recording or a pre-produced loop, and choose a corresponding visual: a live scene, still image, or video loop. A microphone and preamp can be used with an encoder to capture original sound, but they are optional if you already have an appropriate recording. YouTube lists encoder equipment guidance at its live encoder help page.
For a 24/7 do-it-yourself stream, the encoder must keep sending audio and video. A prerecorded loop can run unattended, but the computer, encoder software, and network connection still need to remain available. A live capture also needs the recording equipment and scene to keep working. Decide in advance how you will detect and recover from a frozen picture, silence, internet loss, or an encoder failure.
Clear rights for every sound and image
Use only audio and visuals you have the rights to broadcast. That applies to field recordings, sound effects, music, photographs, video loops, and any identifiable material captured in the background. An environmental recording or a purchased or licensed file is not automatically safe to rebroadcast; retain documentation showing what you may use and where.

YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the feed with a placeholder and warning, and continued use may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content can trigger an interruption unless its owner has added your channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube says claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. See YouTube’s live-streaming policies and guidance and the applicable YouTube terms.
Enable live streaming and create the YouTube event
- Verify and enable your channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling can give viewers an upcoming event to find and notify them when it starts.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Reset it if it is compromised. YouTube describes encoder setup and stream keys in its encoder instructions.
- Set the event details. Give the stream a clear title and description that accurately describe the rain and distant traffic ambience. Use tags only when they help with a commonly misspelled topic; YouTube says tags generally have a minimal role in discovery.
Configure and test the encoder
Choose settings your upload connection can sustain and run a speed test before going live. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. For stereo audio, it specifies AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps. YouTube transcodes streams into formats for different viewers; follow the current requirements shown for your selected stream resolution in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

- Play the exact audio and video source you intend to broadcast, rather than testing with a different scene or soundtrack.
- Listen for silence, clipping, hum, abrupt loop boundaries, or traffic that overwhelms the rain. Check that the chosen visual is moving or stable as intended.
- Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct event and that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview has both picture and sound.
- Test what happens after an internet interruption or encoder restart, and make sure you know how to reconnect using the event’s stream settings.
Start the stream and monitor it
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Start the YouTube event when the preview and stream health indicate that the signal is ready. Open the watch page separately to confirm it plays as expected for viewers.
- Continuously check audio and video quality and stream health. A long ambience broadcast can fail quietly: the encoder may remain open while the audio stops, the picture freezes, or the connection drops.
- When ending a session, stop the YouTube event and then stop the encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise stopping the encoder after the event has stopped.

Plan for interruptions and replays
One 24-hour broadcast is not guaranteed to become one complete replay. YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish archive behavior for a 24-hour session. If a complete replay matters, check the current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on it, consider running shorter sessions, or make a separate local recording. A local recording also needs enough storage and should be tested before the stream.

For an unattended DIY broadcast, plan for what happens if power or internet fails, the encoder closes, or YouTube interrupts the feed. A person may need to restore the connection and start the event again. YouTube’s public setup guidance does not promise that a particular encoder or local computer will recover automatically.
Monetization and discovery
YouTube Partner Program channels may monetize live streams through ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and, for some channels, memberships. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads, so do not treat continuous streaming as predictable income. A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, and viewers can choose to receive a notification. Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified, eligible, and has no applicable live-stream restriction. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key for the correct event, then verify the encoder is actively sending.
- The preview is silent or frozen: inspect the source playback and encoder input, then verify the audio and video in Live Control Room before starting the event.
- The stream drops or content is replaced: check Live Control Room for a stream-health warning or rights notice. Resolve the connection issue or review the matched content and your permissions; do not assume that ambience or licensed material cannot be flagged.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: do not assume a 24-hour session will archive as one video. The stated automatic archive guidance is for streams under 12 hours; check Studio and use shorter sessions or a local recording if a complete replay is important.
