You can run a continuous rain-and-thunder broadcast from a laptop by sending a looping video through an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live. For a true 24/7 stream, the laptop, power and internet connection must remain available; YouTube’s workflow does not make a home setup interruption-proof. What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so set it up well before your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- A laptop running OBS or another compatible encoder. YouTube supports software encoders on computers; its setup guide does not establish a minimum laptop specification that guarantees uninterrupted streaming. OBS provides its own help portal.
- A rain-and-thunder video and audio recording that you created or are permitted to use on YouTube. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate issues.
- An internet connection with measured upload capacity to sustain your chosen settings, plus reliable power for the hours you intend to stream.
For India, test the connection and power conditions where the laptop will actually run. Broadband availability, data-plan terms, outages and power continuity vary by location; no particular provider or laptop can be assumed to guarantee a 24/7 broadcast.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and complete any channel verification or eligibility steps YouTube presents. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Create a stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service where available, then connect your account or select the option to use a stream key. Paste the stream key and enter the server URL if your encoder asks for it. Labels can vary by OBS version. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and replace it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Add the ambience source. Add your prepared rain-and-thunder video as a media source and enable looping in its source properties. Check that both the picture and audio continue at the end of the file. If your production uses separate audio, confirm it stays synchronized and does not end before the video.
- Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Choose a resolution and frame rate the laptop can encode and the connection can upload continuously. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are encoder recommendations, not evidence that your connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Test before the long run. Check your upload speed, then run a representative test with the same video, audio and settings. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators in Live Control Room; if the connection or laptop struggles, reduce the settings and test again.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and confirm the preview and status in Live Control Room before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast. Keep the stream key private.
Keep a laptop-based broadcast running
A 24/7 stream is only as continuous as the equipment and connection feeding it. Configure the laptop to stay awake while plugged in, keep its vents clear, and avoid workloads that compete with encoding. These are practical precautions, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation.
- Power: Use the laptop’s power adapter and consider locally appropriate backup power if an outage would stop the broadcast. A UPS or inverter does not guarantee continuity; capacity and setup matter.
- Internet: Measure upload performance at the streaming location and monitor stream health. If uninterrupted operation matters, consider a backup connection, but test failover rather than assuming it will work without interruption.
- Thermals and stability: Place the laptop on a hard, ventilated surface. Check for overheating, encoder errors, operating-system restarts and updates that could interrupt a long run.
- Recovery: If the stream disconnects, check the encoder, connection and Live Control Room status before restarting. A reconnection may restore the broadcast, but it does not guarantee viewers will see a seamless stream.
Plan for replay and copyright
Do not rely on one 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, record locally and confirm that you have enough storage. Alternatively, use shorter broadcasts and plan restarts; that still does not guarantee a seamless viewer experience. Use audio and visuals you have rights to stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the image, interrupt the stream or terminate it. If you have a licence, check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID; permission alone may not prevent an interruption. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams.
Copyright permission is not a monetization guarantee
YouTube’s monetization policies expect original, authentic content. Repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible, and reused-content review is separate from copyright permission. A loop or a licence receipt alone does not establish monetization eligibility. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies, including its policy update note dated July 15, 2025.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |

| YouTube will not accept the stream or key | Confirm live streaming is enabled, allow for first-time activation of up to 24 hours, and copy the current stream URL and key from the intended stream in Live Control Room. Replace a key that was exposed. |
| Stream health reports unstable connection | Compare the encoder bitrate with measured upload capacity, close competing network-heavy tasks, and test at a lower bitrate or resolution. The 4 Mbps and 10 Mbps figures are YouTube H.264 recommendations for 720p/30 and 1080p/30, not a home-internet guarantee. |
