To run science lessons continuously on YouTube, use OBS Studio with its VLC Video source to play a playlist of lesson files on repeat, and connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. This setup loops local media files; the documented OBS workflow does not establish that it can ingest a YouTube-hosted playlist URL directly. What you need before setting up a 24/7 lesson stream
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. - A computer capable of running OBS, with VLC installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Local lesson video files you have the rights to stream, plus a reliable internet connection and a plan to monitor the computer, encoder, power and network.
You do not need a dedicated hardware encoder just to send a playlist: YouTube supports software encoders as well as hardware encoders. OBS is a practical software starting point for this local-file workflow. Hardware may suit a specific dedicated or unattended setup, but check the product’s compatibility, support and operational requirements before buying; the available guidance does not specify hardware for a particular resolution or duration. YouTube maintains a verified encoder list.
How to set up OBS to stream a repeating playlist
- Install VLC, then open OBS. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a new VLC Video Source and add the lesson media files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want viewers to see them. The source documented by OBS is a playlist of media files, not a direct YouTube playlist URL.
- Enable looping. In the VLC Video source’s settings, keep Loop Playlist enabled so playback returns to the first lesson after the last one. Confirm the order and playback in OBS before connecting to YouTube.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube treats the key like a password and address: do not share it, and reset it if it is exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings guidance.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, select the service/custom-server option as appropriate, then enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Check the values carefully; a wrong or outdated key prevents OBS from connecting.
- Test before going live. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture and audio. Correct problems before making the stream public, then start the live stream from YouTube Studio when the preview is ready.
- Monitor the ongoing broadcast. Keep an operator or monitoring plan for OBS, the computer, power and internet. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; shared connections and interruptions can still disrupt a continuous broadcast. See YouTube streaming tips.
Can I stream a YouTube playlist 24/7?
Not by assuming that OBS can play a playlist hosted on YouTube. The documented VLC Video source workflow uses media files added to the source. Downloading or reusing videos from YouTube also does not grant the rights to rebroadcast them. For this method, prepare authorized lesson files locally, add those files to the VLC Video source and let OBS repeat them.
Clear rights for every lesson and audio track
Use lesson recordings, images, music and other audio only when you have the necessary rights to stream them. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its livestream terms and conditions.

Plan stream boundaries and archives
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete archive on that basis. If viewers need a complete replay, verify YouTube’s current archive limits and plan stream boundaries accordingly. Test and verify any local recording you rely on as a backup; a successful live broadcast does not by itself confirm that a usable recording exists.
Troubleshooting a repeating science stream
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not load: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. OBS documents VLC as a requirement for this source.
- The playlist stops after the last lesson: Reopen the source settings and check that Loop Playlist is enabled and that the media files are still available.
- OBS cannot connect to YouTube: Confirm the server URL and stream key match the current stream in Live Control Room. If the key may have been disclosed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Check the connection’s available upload capacity against the total bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and look for other devices or applications using the connection. Monitor the feed for further interruptions.
- The stream is blocked or interrupted after launch: Review the lesson video and audio for third-party content and confirm that all permissions, including any required Content ID allowlisting, are in place.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification and live-stream restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming for first-time access.
- The archive is incomplete or unavailable: A 24-hour stream is outside the cited under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance. Check current archive limits and use planned stream segments or verified local recordings when a complete replay matters.
