You can run a 24/7 sleep-sounds stream on a laptop by looping an audio-and-visual file in OBS and sending it to YouTube through a verified channel. Before starting, confirm your channel can livestream, use audio and visuals you have permission to broadcast, and test the actual stream settings on your home connection. A laptop-based setup depends on that device, your internet and power staying available; there is no universal laptop endurance or cooling specification for this use.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A laptop with OBS Studio installed, your sleep-sounds media stored locally, and an upload connection you have tested.
- Permission to livestream every sound recording and visual element, including permission for any replay YouTube archives.
- A plan for interruptions: the laptop, network and power must remain available for a local OBS stream to continue.
YouTube recommends encoder streaming for a laptop production and does not require expensive equipment. Its recommendations do not establish that a particular laptop is suitable for indefinite operation.
Prepare a sleep-sounds loop in OBS
Choose one file or a playlist
For a simple setup, put a single authorized audio-and-visual file on the laptop. OBS Media Source can loop a file; documented formats include MP3, AAC, MP4 and WebM. If you want to rotate among files, OBS VLC Video supports playlists and has loop-playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed to use that source. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Sleep sounds are often mostly still imagery, but check what viewers will see as well as hear. A test should use content with sound and motion similar to the stream you plan to run, as YouTube advises in its live-streaming tips.

Add and check the source
- Open OBS and create a scene for the sleep stream.
- Add the local file as a Media Source and enable looping, or add a VLC Video Source with your playlist. Confirm the file plays and returns to the beginning or continues through the playlist as intended.
- Set up the scene’s visual layout and listen to the audio in OBS. Check that the sound is present, the level is not unintentionally muted, and any visual content is authorized.
- Keep the media on local storage for the stream. If the file is moved, renamed or disconnected, OBS may no longer be able to play it.
Configure YouTube and OBS output
Connect OBS to the live destination
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and choose encoder streaming. Select the stream destination and locate its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key using the fields shown in your OBS version.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where available. Start with a private or unlisted test rather than immediately announcing a public 24/7 stream.
Choose a stable video and audio setting
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 3 Mbps. This is an encoder recommendation, not a guarantee that an internet connection can sustain it. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current recommendations and choose quality according to reliable upload capacity.
For a sleep-sounds stream, 720p30 is a reasonable starting point when the visual loop does not need higher detail. A higher resolution is useful only if its visual value justifies the additional upload demand and your connection can sustain the selected bitrate consistently. YouTube says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Measure upload performance and leave operating margin rather than treating a brief best-case result as a continuous guarantee.

Test, go live and monitor the stream
- Run an unlisted test using the planned audio, imagery and output settings. Check the YouTube preview and listen to the stream from a separate device if possible.
- Confirm that the audio is continuous, the visual loop behaves as intended, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health. Read any warnings or messages in the Live Control Room.
- Check whether YouTube is creating a replay archive and whether that is what you want. Rights must cover both the live transmission and any archived video.
- When the test is satisfactory, start the stream and continue monitoring stream health. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend continuous quality monitoring.
Plan for laptop, network and power interruptions
A laptop stream runs locally, so OBS must keep running and the machine must remain powered and connected. Prefer a wired network connection if it is practical and more stable in your home, but a wired link is not a YouTube requirement; the relevant test is whether your actual connection sustains the stream reliably. Wi-Fi performance depends on local conditions.
Keep the laptop in a ventilated location and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your model. The cited official sources do not specify a safe temperature, a universal laptop endurance rating or a UPS size for this scenario. Power backup needs likewise depend on the device and local power conditions. NIC’s Webcast Services page gives a dedicated-bandwidth figure of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its agency webcast context; that is not a household YouTube requirement and should not be used as one.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Use only audio and visuals whose licenses permit the intended livestream and any replay. India’s Copyright Act defines sound recordings and communication to the public, while the Copyright Office describes infringement exceptions as limited. The cited exception text is not a general license to stream commercially released music or ambience. See the Government of India’s Copyright Act, 1957, Chapter I and exceptions information. This is practical rights guidance, not a legal determination about a specific track.
Do not assume that a track labeled “royalty-free” necessarily covers livestreaming, monetization, all territories or archived replays. Read the actual license and retain proof of the permissions you rely on. Separately, make the stream useful and sufficiently original for your channel; continuous playback alone does not establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements.

Troubleshooting common problems
