You can run prerecorded waterfall audio continuously from an India-based Linux VPS by having FFmpeg encode and publish it to an Icecast server. The FFmpeg command is only one part of the setup: you also need audio you have permission to distribute, a reachable Icecast mount, suitable FFmpeg codecs, and a way to restart and monitor the process. A VPS can fail, so 24/7 describes the goal—not guaranteed uptime.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS with enough outbound bandwidth for your expected listeners. A server in India may be useful for your audience, but the suitable plan depends on listener count and the provider’s transfer and network limits; no particular provider or plan is established here.
- One or more audio files that you have permission to distribute. Confirm the rights for both the recording and any composition before broadcasting; the technical setup does not establish whether a particular recording may legally be rebroadcast in India.
- An Icecast server reachable by listeners, with a configured mountpoint and credentials. FFmpeg’s documented Icecast URL form is
icecast://[username[:password]@]server:port/mountpoint(FFmpeg protocol documentation). - An FFmpeg build that can decode your source and encode the chosen output format. Codec availability varies by build, so check the actual installation rather than assuming a package includes a particular encoder.
Set up the stream
1. Install and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your Linux distribution, then inspect the installed build’s version and help output. Check that it can read your file format and that the encoder you plan to use is available. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes inputs with -i and outputs with an output URL (FFmpeg documentation).
Options can differ between packaged versions. The official documentation index says its current documentation is regenerated nightly and lists version-specific branches, so verify the options against the FFmpeg release installed on your VPS (FFmpeg documentation index).
2. Configure the Icecast destination
Set up an Icecast mountpoint and credentials, and make sure the server is reachable from the VPS and from a listener’s device. FFmpeg documents Icecast output parameters for stream metadata, password, content type, legacy mode, and TLS (FFmpeg protocol documentation).
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not put a real password in a public script, article, or command that may be retained in shell history or logs. Use a protected service configuration or another secrets-handling method suitable for your server. The documented URL can contain credentials, which makes protecting them important.
3. Choose audio and output settings
Decide on the output codec, bitrate, channel layout, and sample rate based on your source, encoder support, and listener compatibility. There is no single bitrate recommendation established for this setup. Higher bitrates use more outbound capacity; lower bitrates reduce transfer use but can affect sound quality. Confirm the selected settings work with your installed encoder and Icecast configuration.

If your source already matches the stream format, you may be able to copy audio without transcoding; otherwise, map and encode the audio explicitly. The right command depends on the file format and installed build. Do not assume a command copied from another server will work unchanged.
4. Publish a test stream
Build the FFmpeg command with your input path, any required mapping or audio encoding options, and the Icecast output URL. Keep the password outside the visible command where possible. The protocol documentation describes the Icecast output URL pattern and its available options, but it is not a complete deployment recipe.

Run the process interactively for the first test. Check FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoder errors, then open the listener URL from a device outside the VPS network. Confirm that audio plays, the mount remains available, and any intended stream name or metadata appears as expected.
Make playback continuous and recoverable
Choose a looping method and verify it
For a single recording, configure the input or playback workflow to repeat it; for a collection, use a playlist or another input method that advances through the files. Verify the behavior in your installed FFmpeg version with your actual files. No specific loop command or playlist invocation has been established for this configuration, and playback behavior can depend on the input format and options.

Run FFmpeg under supervision
Once the test works, configure a process supervisor to start FFmpeg after a reboot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Add monitoring so you can notice a failed process, a disconnected Icecast destination, or an unavailable mount. A supervisor can restart a process; it cannot guarantee that the VPS, network, or Icecast server stays online.
Keep source files and logs within the server’s available disk space, and rotate or limit logs so they do not grow without bound. Test a reboot and a simulated process failure before relying on the stream.

Estimate bandwidth from your settings
Estimate outbound transfer using the encoded bitrate and listener-hours. A stream’s total egress increases with the number of concurrent listeners and how long they listen; actual capacity also depends on the VPS provider’s transfer allowance and network limits. Check those terms for the specific India-region plan you choose instead of treating the VPS location as proof of sufficient capacity.

- FFmpeg cannot open the source: check the file path, permissions, and whether the installed build supports the file’s format and codec.
- Encoder or option errors: inspect the installed build’s encoder and help information, then confirm options in documentation matching that release. Current FFmpeg documentation may not describe every older distribution package identically.
- Icecast rejects the connection: check the server name, port, mountpoint, credentials, and Icecast configuration. Keep credentials protected while checking logs and command history.
- FFmpeg connects but listeners hear silence or distorted audio: inspect the source stream, audio mapping, encoder settings, and channel layout. Test the listener URL from outside the VPS.
- The stream stops after a reboot or process error: check that the supervisor is enabled and configured to start the correct command, then review its logs and test restart behavior.
- Listeners cannot connect reliably: check the Icecast server’s reachability, the VPS’s outbound capacity, concurrent listener load, and the provider’s network or transfer limits.
Rights and platform considerations
Having an audio file does not by itself establish the right to broadcast it. Confirm distribution permission for the particular waterfall recording and any music or other material it contains before making the stream public. Applicable rights depend on the content and circumstances; the FFmpeg technical documentation does not answer that legal question.
This setup publishes audio to an Icecast server. It is not a YouTube live-stream setup, and no YouTube-specific rules or monetization outcome should be inferred from it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream live camera footage or publish to Icecast.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for YouTube video streams, not an alternative Icecast endpoint for this audio-only VPS workflow. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
