How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Lecture Stream with FFmpeg on Debian

A practical Debian and FFmpeg guide to looping a lecture on YouTube Live, selecting compatible settings, monitoring recovery, and avoiding archive surprises.

You can keep a prepared lecture video live on YouTube from Debian by looping it with FFmpeg and sending the feed to a YouTube encoder event. The process only stays continuous while the Debian host, network connection, and FFmpeg process remain available. YouTube’s archive is a separate matter: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so plan event rotation and keep an independent local backup if the recording matters.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • A Debian machine with FFmpeg installed, the codecs and muxers required by your chosen command, and enough CPU capacity if you transcode.
  • A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the selected bitrate, plus enough availability to keep the host running continuously.
  • A prepared lecture file. This workflow sends uploaded media; it does not capture a camera or microphone.

YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guidance describe the eligibility and event requirements. YouTube can change its interface and requirements, so check the current options in Live Control Room before scheduling a stream.

Check the Debian FFmpeg build

Debian package contents vary by release and build. Do not assume a command or encoder is available just because FFmpeg is installed. On the target machine, inspect the version, encoders, and output muxers:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
ffmpeg -muxers

For the recovery example below, also check whether the installed build provides the FIFO muxer and its options:

ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo

Use an encoder listed by your installation if re-encoding is needed. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, but a codec being accepted by YouTube does not guarantee that the installed FFmpeg build or chosen output container can use it. The example command below uses H.264 and AAC.

Create the YouTube encoder event and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and choose the event settings that fit your channel.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the server URL YouTube provides rather than guessing or reusing a URL from another event.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”: anyone who has the key may be able to send a feed to the event. Do not publish it, commit it to a script repository, or include it in screenshots.
  4. Open Live Control Room’s preview before making the stream public. The encoder can be sending successfully while the event is still waiting for you to start or publish it in YouTube.

The Live Control Room labels may change. YouTube’s “YouTube live streaming tips” and “Manage live stream settings” help pages explain encoder setup, stream keys, and eligibility.

Choose a bitrate, resolution, and keyframe interval

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Debian host or uplink can sustain the feed. Test the real upload path and choose settings with headroom rather than setting a bitrate your connection can only reach intermittently.

Target video YouTube-recommended video bitrate Keyframe interval Audio
720p at 30 fps, H.264 6 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds AAC or MP3; select a compatible bitrate for your programme
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 10 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds AAC or MP3; select a compatible bitrate for your programme
720p at 30 fps, H.265/HEVC or AV1 6 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds AAC or MP3; select a compatible bitrate for your programme
1080p at 30 fps, H.265/HEVC or AV1 10 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds AAC or MP3; select a compatible bitrate for your programme

The values in this table are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of your connection. YouTube’s encoder-settings page includes recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs; consult it if your lecture does not match these rows.

Allow for audio and network overhead in addition to the video bitrate. If the upstream connection varies, reduce the target or resolution until the feed remains stable. A bitrate that looks suitable on paper can still produce dropped frames or stream-health warnings when the real uplink is congested.

Prepare the media and choose stream-copy or re-encoding

Stream-copy when the source already fits

Stream-copy avoids decoding and re-encoding the media, which greatly reduces CPU work and avoids another lossy encode. It is suitable only when the source’s video and audio codecs, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and timestamps are compatible with the selected YouTube ingest path and output container. Check the file before relying on it:

ffprobe -hide_banner lecture.mp4

If the source is incompatible, stream-copy may fail or result in an unusable feed. In particular, do not assume that every codec accepted by YouTube can be carried by every FFmpeg output muxer. Use an FFmpeg build and output format that support the actual source, or transcode to a compatible profile.

Re-encode when the source needs conversion

Re-encoding can produce a predictable H.264/AAC output, but it uses CPU and may reduce quality. A 1080p30 profile using 10 Mbps is an example aligned with YouTube’s H.264 recommendation below; change the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the lecture and the capacity of the host and uplink. If the input has a different frame rate, make a deliberate choice rather than assuming the example’s 30 fps profile is correct.

Start a continuous lecture feed

Replace the example file path, server URL, and key with your own values. The stream key is a secret; avoid saving a real key in shell history or a world-readable script. The command is a starting point, not a universal recipe for every source file or Debian build.

Example: loop a compatible source without re-encoding

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lecture.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c copy
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re reads it at its normal playback rate instead of sending the file as fast as possible. The two -map options select the first video and first audio stream explicitly. If the file has no audio stream, remove the audio map; if it has multiple tracks, inspect it with ffprobe and map the intended track. Use the complete RTMPS server URL and key provided by Live Control Room in the output URL.

Example: loop and encode a 1080p30 H.264/AAC feed

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lecture.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
  -r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"

This example assumes the installed FFmpeg build includes libx264, the input has an audio stream, and 1080p30 is appropriate. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, or about 2 seconds; the keyframe interval must be adjusted if you choose another frame rate. The bitrate flags request a constant-rate profile, but actual encoder behavior depends on the encoder and build. If libx264 is unavailable, choose an installed encoder and verify its options rather than copying the command unchanged.

For a source that does not fit the chosen output profile, adapt the scaling, frame-rate, audio, and mapping options. Do not upscale a lower-resolution lecture expecting it to create detail. If preserving the original quality is more important than using a fixed profile, confirm that stream-copy is compatible before switching to -c copy.

Use FIFO recovery carefully

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer configuration that can attempt recovery after temporary network errors. It can help bridge a transient interruption; it cannot fix a wrong stream key, incompatible media, a permanent network outage, a stopped or failed host, a YouTube restriction, or an event that has ended. Check the FIFO options supported by your installed build before using them.

For a compatible build, the output portion of the command can use a FIFO muxer with FLV output and recovery options such as:

-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-attempt_recovery 1 -recover_any_error 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
"rtmps://SERVER-URL/STREAM-KEY"

Use these options with the rest of the chosen FFmpeg command in place of the direct -f flv output. Confirm the exact option names and behavior with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo on the Debian host. FIFO recovery is not a substitute for monitoring or for restarting FFmpeg after a process or machine failure.

Test the stream and monitor it while live

  1. Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test event and representative lecture material. Test the actual audio, motion, resolution, and runtime you intend to use.
  2. Check that FFmpeg reports successful output and that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed. Review the preview and stream-health messages before making the event public.
  3. Monitor the host’s CPU load, available disk space, network stability, and FFmpeg process. Re-encoding can put sustained load on the CPU; a machine that handles a short test may still fail under continuous operation.
  4. Check the local archive or recording file you configured separately, if any, and verify that it is growing and playable. A source video sitting on disk is not a recording of what YouTube actually received.
  5. After any reconnect or event change, confirm in Live Control Room that the intended event is receiving the feed and that the key still corresponds to that event.

YouTube’s encoder tips recommend testing representative content, checking the preview and stream health, monitoring quality, and checking a local archive file. A live encoder connection alone does not confirm that every viewer can receive the stream cleanly.

Plan YouTube archives separately from the 24/7 feed

A continuously running FFmpeg process does not mean YouTube will produce one durable recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat the 12-hour point as a risk boundary, not a promise that every shorter stream will be archived.

If you need YouTube archives, divide the broadcast into planned events that end before the 12-hour boundary, start the next event deliberately, and verify that each resulting archive is available. Keep a separate local recording as a backup; YouTube recommends a local archive backup. A local recording is controlled independently from YouTube’s archive behavior and should be checked for free disk space and successful playback.

For a continuous channel presence, event rotation needs a real operator plan: an ending event must be closed or stopped, the next event must be created or selected, and the encoder must send to the new event’s key. Do not assume an indefinitely connected encoder will keep one event’s archive intact.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming feed Incorrect server URL or key, event not ready, or network/RTMPS connectivity problem Copy the current event’s server URL and key again, verify the event in Live Control Room, and check the host’s connection. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
FFmpeg exits with an encoder or muxer error The Debian build lacks the requested encoder/muxer, or the input streams do not match the command Inspect ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -encoders, ffmpeg -muxers, and ffprobe output. Change the command to match the installed build and actual media.
Video works but audio is absent The input has no audio stream or the command maps the wrong track Inspect the file with ffprobe. Remove the audio map if there is no audio, or select the intended audio stream explicitly.
Stream health reports unstable delivery or dropped frames The bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity, the connection is fluctuating, or the host is overloaded Check Live Control Room health messages and host load. Reduce resolution or bitrate to a level the actual connection can sustain; reduce encoding load if CPU is saturated.
Feed stops after a brief network interruption The connection loss exceeded recovery behavior, or recovery is unsupported or misconfigured Check FIFO options against the installed build, inspect FFmpeg output, restore network access, and restart the process if needed. FIFO cannot repair a permanent outage.
Feed continues but no YouTube archive appears The event exceeded 12 hours or archiving did not complete as expected Check the event duration and archive status. Keep future events below the boundary where possible and retain a separate local recording.
The feed works but a lecture segment repeats unexpectedly -stream_loop -1 is repeating the input as configured Use a playlist or a prepared longer input if the programme should change over time. Confirm the media order before starting the public event.
