You can run a 24/7 YouTube Live stream from an Amazon EC2 Linux server: configure a software encoder on the instance, point it at the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then supervise the process and monitor the stream. The exact setup depends on whether you are looping a prerecorded video, encoding a live feed, or generating a scene; there is no single EC2 size or encoder command that fits every workload.
What you need to decide before launching EC2
EC2 is a virtual server. Its instance type determines available compute, memory, network, and storage resources. A prerecorded file loop can have different CPU and storage needs from a live camera feed or real-time transcoding. If your source is already in the format and quality you intend to send, avoid unnecessary transcoding where your encoder workflow allows it.
- Source: prerecorded media, a generated scene, a captured live feed, or another server-side input.
- Output: target resolution and frame rate, plus a bitrate your encoder and sustained network path can maintain.
- Region: choose based on current instance availability, route to YouTube ingest, latency and cost—not proximity alone.
- Continuity: decide how you will restart a failed encoder, detect instance or network problems, and recover the stream.
- Rights: make sure you have the rights to rebroadcast the material. This guide does not establish YouTube copyright or reused-content policy.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS with S3 solution guide lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai) among regions for that solution. That does not establish that every EC2 instance type or service required by a different setup is available there. Check AWS’s current regional service and instance availability before choosing a deployment.
Set up the YouTube stream and EC2 server
1. Create the live stream in YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Use the current values shown there in your encoder. A stream key is a credential: do not publish it, put it in a public repository, include it in a screenshot, or leave it in world-readable command history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

2. Launch a Linux EC2 instance
Select a Linux image and an instance type suited to your source and encoding workload. Add persistent storage sized for any media files and logs you need to retain. Configure a controlled way to connect for administration. AWS security groups act as network firewall controls; limit SSH access to a trusted source such as your own IP where practical. A server that sends an outbound stream ordinarily does not need an inbound RTMP port opened.
There is no verified universal instance size for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream. The correct size depends on whether encoding is required, codec, resolution, frame rate, CPU load, memory and storage needs, and the sustained throughput available on the chosen instance and route. Test with your actual workload before relying on it.

3. Install and configure an encoder
Install a software encoder such as FFmpeg on the instance and configure it for your input. A command depends on whether the input is a file, capture device, generated graphics, or transcoded feed, as well as the codec and output settings. No one command should be treated as a tested recipe for all of these cases. Use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and keep the key private.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s H.264 bitrate figures in its current encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03; they are platform recommendations, not independent performance measurements.

Use a lower supported resolution or frame rate if the source, instance CPU, or sustained connection cannot reliably hold the target settings. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and testing the actual upload path. AWS cautions that network capacity depends on instance type and path; smaller instances may burst above baseline only temporarily. An “up to” network rate is not a promise of continuous throughput.
Start, test, and supervise the stream
- Start the encoder with the selected input and YouTube stream URL/key, using the compatible settings above.
- Check Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that video and audio are present and that the output is stable before making the event live.
- Use YouTube’s go-live flow when the preview and health checks are satisfactory. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Run the encoder under process supervision with restart behavior and logs. Monitor encoder exit or errors, EC2 instance status, and YouTube stream health. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee that a particular service manager or reconnect setting prevents interruptions.
- Exercise recovery by checking what happens after an instance reboot or stream-key rotation, and verify that the encoder starts with the intended input and settings.
A single EC2 instance, process supervisor, and network route can still fail. A business-critical broadcast needs tested monitoring and redundancy beyond one server; no specific redundancy recipe or guaranteed uptime is established here.

India region and 24/7 AWS cost
AWS On-Demand EC2 is billed for running time, with a 60-second minimum. A continuously running instance remains in the billable running state. AWS directs customers to current pricing for exact rates; a useful monthly estimate also needs the selected region and instance, storage, applicable public IPv4 or other network charges, outbound data transfer, and any supporting services. There is no single India-specific monthly total that applies to every stream.
Use the current AWS EC2 pricing information or AWS pricing calculator with your actual configuration and usage assumptions. Check the chosen instance’s sustained network capability as well as its compute capacity; a low instance price is not useful if the workload cannot encode or deliver the stream reliably.

Plan archiving separately from keeping the channel live
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as one complete video. Confirm YouTube’s current behavior for your intended duration. Segmenting broadcasts may be worth investigating if archives matter, but the cited guidance does not certify a particular segmentation workflow.
