You can run a continuous YouTube music broadcast from Linux Mint with OBS Studio or FFmpeg: send a looping local playlist and visual to a YouTube Live event using its stream URL and key. The computer, encoder and internet connection must stay available, and YouTube’s music-rights checks and archive limits still apply. For a stream that does not depend on a computer staying on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that plays uploaded videos on YouTube.
Before you start: check channel access and music rights
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so turn it on and confirm access before planning a launch. See YouTube’s live-stream encoder setup guidance and live-streaming requirements.
Use music you are authorized to stream
Use music you own or have permission to broadcast on YouTube. Check that the license covers live streaming in the territories where the stream is available, and any recording or archive you intend to keep. Keep license records. Attribution, buying a track, or seeing it labeled “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that a continuous YouTube stream is permitted.
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say content providers must have the rights necessary to exploit live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a warning that is not resolved can lead to a placeholder, interruption or termination, and a copyright strike can also end a stream. If you have a license for third-party music, ask the rightsholder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption without that step. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Choose an encoder for Linux Mint
| Approach | Works best when | What you need to manage |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | You want a desktop interface to arrange a visual, overlays and preview. | Keep the computer awake, verify the media source loops, and monitor OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. |
| FFmpeg with a service manager | You want a command-line pipeline for repeating local media with less GUI interaction. | Validate the FFmpeg build and codecs, configure a boot service and restart policy, and arrange logs, health checks and reconnect testing. |
OBS is free and open source, and YouTube lists it in its encoder directory. Install it from a trusted source compatible with your particular Linux Mint release. Package availability and installation steps vary by release; do not assume one command applies to every Mint system. FFmpeg automation with a service manager such as systemd is an implementation approach, not a one-size-fits-all Mint recipe. Check the installed build, codecs and service environment before relying on it unattended.
Prepare a local playlist and visual
- Collect permitted audio. Put the tracks you are authorized to stream in a local folder. Avoid using a browser tab or capturing audio from another online stream.
- Choose a visual. A still image or looping visual can accompany the music. Make sure any artwork or video is also cleared for use.
- Test the sequence. Check playback order, transitions, audio levels and loop behavior using representative files before going live. Confirm the encoder continues after the final item in the playlist.
Local media avoids depending on a separate online player, but it does not make the broadcast immune to disk, application or system failures.

Create a YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live. Create or schedule a stream and choose the appropriate live-stream setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS or your FFmpeg configuration, set YouTube as the destination and enter those values. Use RTMPS where available.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public screenshot, post, shared configuration or shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Verify both the picture and audio in the preview before starting the public event.
Set conservative video and audio parameters
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, and lists AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. See the current YouTube live encoder settings.
| Setting | Practical starting point or YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMPS where available |
| Video codec | H.264 is a straightforward compatibility choice; YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 for RTMP(S). |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Example video target | For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. |
For music with a static visual, 720p30 is a reasonable modest starting target, but the bitrate figures are encoder guidance, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. Check your available upload capacity and leave headroom for fluctuations. Test with the actual audio and visual motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a successful preview proves long-term stability.

Keep the stream running and plan recovery
For an OBS desktop setup
- Prevent automatic sleep and make sure the machine will not shut down unexpectedly.
- Confirm the media source and playlist loop as intended, and test a full playlist cycle.
- Watch OBS’s connection state and dropped-frame indicator. OBS notes that rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection state can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the network cannot sustain.
- Test what happens when the encoder stops and when the network briefly disconnects. Know how to restart the encoder and confirm YouTube receives it again.
For an FFmpeg service
- Configure the service to start at boot and restart the encoder process after an exit.
- Keep logs and create a separate health check so a process that is running but no longer sending usable media is not mistaken for a healthy stream.
- Test the service under its actual user account and environment, including media paths, permissions, codecs and reconnect behavior.
A restart policy can recover from an encoder crash; it cannot repair a failed ISP, power cut, invalid stream key, damaged media, YouTube-side interruption or rights takedown. Neither OBS nor Linux Mint guarantees uninterrupted uptime. A home setup needs a reliable powered machine, stable internet and someone or something monitoring it.
Do not rely on a 24-hour live event as your archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining the broadcast matters, use separate shorter events and/or record locally. YouTube recommends a local recording backup; confirm that the file is growing and usable, and estimate storage from your recording bitrate and retention period. An external SSD or hard drive is optional backup storage, not a requirement to stream. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
