VLC can repeat a music playlist, but its repeat button alone does not create a YouTube livestream. You need both continuous playlist playback and an encoder feed that YouTube accepts. VLC’s documented playlist examples send media over a local HTTP stream; YouTube separately requires an encoder connected with a stream URL and key. The official documentation cited here does not establish a complete, supported VLC-to-YouTube setup, so treat VLC as the playlist player—not a guaranteed end-to-end broadcast solution.
What you need for a continuous YouTube music stream
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled.
- Music files you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube, including any rights needed for the territories and archive you intend to serve.
- VLC to play and repeat the playlist.
- An encoder workflow that can send a YouTube-compatible feed using the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio.
- A computer and reliable internet connection that can remain available, plus a plan for outages and restarts.
The important limitation is the encoder handoff. VLC documents playlist sequencing and network stream output, but the documented examples do not show VLC repeat connecting directly to YouTube’s ingest service. Do not assume selecting repeat in VLC supplies the required protocol, encoder settings, or recovery behavior.
Enable YouTube live streaming and prepare the stream
- Check eligibility early. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder workflow. Follow the current interface prompts; labels can change.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or put it in a public command or configuration.
- Preview before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected audio and video and that Live Control Room reports a healthy stream before you start broadcasting to viewers.
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes RTMPS as encrypted transport and states: “Your data will be encrypted all the way into and through Google’s servers, so nobody can intercept your communication with the service.” Use the current stream URL and settings YouTube provides rather than copying an endpoint from an old tutorial. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Build and repeat the playlist in VLC
Prepare the audio files
Put the files you are allowed to broadcast in a stable folder and create a playlist in VLC. Check that every item plays, filenames and paths remain valid after restart, and the sequence has no accidental gaps or unsuitable tracks. VLC can sequence media; its documented examples also show combining multiple MP3 inputs with a gather output and keeping the output open as tracks change.

Set repeat and test the boundaries
Use VLC’s playlist repeat control for the desired loop behavior, then test the last track into the first track. Also test a single-track playlist if that is your case, missing or moved files, and what happens when playback ends or VLC is restarted. The exact repeat icon and behavior can vary by VLC version and platform, so verify the active playlist mode in your installed version rather than relying on a screenshot from another release.
VLC documentation describes VLM playlist broadcasts and network output, including local HTTP examples. These demonstrate playlist sequencing and network streaming, not YouTube ingestion. A separate bridge or encoder must accept the playlist output and deliver the required YouTube-compatible feed. The sources linked here do not establish a tested universal bridge recipe, so do not treat a local HTTP stream as the YouTube stream URL.

Configure the YouTube encoder and upload connection
Choose compatible encoding settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the bitrate table on YouTube’s encoder settings page instead of treating any one figure as universal.
If the music stream uses a static or simple visual, configure the video format your encoder and YouTube ingest support, then verify the received picture in preview. Do not assume an audio playlist by itself will satisfy an encoder workflow expecting video.

Leave upload headroom and monitor stream health
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room above the stream’s total bitrate. That is YouTube guidance, not a measured guarantee of uninterrupted transmission. Test the actual audio and video settings you intend to use, preferably with a representative amount of motion and the full encoder running, and check stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube also recommends a speed test and reliable connectivity; a wired connection can be a practical choice for a stationary computer, but is not a YouTube requirement. See encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Only stream tracks for which you have the necessary rights for the planned YouTube live broadcast, relevant territories, and any archive. YouTube’s terms require the creator to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights. A track that is available to listen to or that you own a copy of is not automatically cleared for a public livestream.

YouTube can interrupt or terminate a live stream when it detects third-party content. If you have licensed music, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted in Content ID. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted without allowlisting, even when the content is licensed. Consult YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and the applicable rights holder or license terms before going live.

A repeating playlist only controls playback while the relevant player and broadcast chain keep running. Power loss, computer sleep, operating-system restarts, internet outages, an encoder crash, a failed playlist item, or a rejected stream can still stop the broadcast. Disable sleep only if appropriate for the computer’s role, test restart behavior, and decide who will notice and respond to an outage. Monitor Live Control Room rather than assuming a looping source means the public stream is healthy.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not plan on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast becoming a single unlimited archive: confirm current Live Control Room behavior and archive handling for your workflow. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting a VLC-to-YouTube setup
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC repeats locally, but YouTube receives nothing. | Playlist playback and YouTube ingest are separate; VLC’s repeat setting is not proof that an encoder feed is reaching YouTube. | Confirm that a compatible encoder or bridge is connected to the YouTube stream URL and key, and inspect Live Control Room preview and stream health. |
| Preview is black or has no audio. | The encoder may be receiving the wrong output, media path, or format. | Play the VLC playlist locally, inspect the encoder’s selected input and audio/video configuration, then test again before going live. |
| Tracks play but the playlist does not loop. | The repeat mode may be off or set to repeat only the current item; playlist boundaries may not behave as expected in the installed VLC version. | Check the active repeat mode and test the transition from the final item to the first item before broadcasting. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or drops frames. | The total bitrate may be too high for available upload capacity, or the network may be unreliable. | Run a speed test, lower the encoder bitrate using YouTube’s table for the selected format, preserve the recommended upload headroom, and test under real operating conditions. |
| The stream is interrupted despite having a music license. | Content ID may identify the third-party track, and the channel may not be allowlisted. | Contact the rights holder about allowlisting and confirm the license covers YouTube live use. |
| The broadcast ends after a computer or application restart. | Playlist repeat does not itself restart VLC, the encoder, or YouTube ingest. | Test the full restart procedure and arrange monitoring and manual recovery; do not infer automatic recovery from VLC repeat. |
