To loop a playlist of story videos into YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put the clips in a concat-demuxer text file, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Use -re to read the files at their normal playback rate. For a dependable 24/7 feed, the clips must be compatible, the host and network must stay available, and you must monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room; looping alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
1. Prepare a compatible playlist
Create the concat file
Place a plain-text file such as stories.ffconcat beside your video files. Use one file directive per clip:

file 'story-03.mp4'If you use the ffconcat version 1.0 signature, it must be the exact first line, with no byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. Relative paths are easier to move between systems and work with the default safe-path setting. Quote or escape paths that contain spaces or special characters. Absolute paths and other unsafe paths may be rejected unless you change the safe-path option.
Check the files before choosing stream copy
The concat demuxer joins packets and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the previous one. It expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or other stream properties can make a no-reencode concat unreliable; mismatched stream durations can also create gaps or artifacts. Incorrect or estimated durations can make timestamp problems worse. A duration directive can override a file’s duration when you know the correct value.

- For stream copy, inspect every clip and confirm the streams are compatible with one another and with the output container.
- If the clips differ, transcode them to a common format before using the concat demuxer with stream copy.
- If you need to combine dissimilar clips while re-encoding, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the appropriate alternative to consider.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes these compatibility and timestamp constraints; its FAQ distinguishes the demuxer from the filter-based approach.
2. Get the YouTube ingest details
Create or schedule the live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream.
- Open Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Select and use the RTMPS URL when using encrypted ingest.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in a command, screenshot, repository, or log that other people can access.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its Live API documentation describes an RTMPS ingestion address and stream name; some encoders need them combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact URL and key for your event rather than assuming a fixed endpoint.
3. Choose an FFmpeg command
Re-encode for a consistent output
This template re-encodes the video as H.264 and audio as AAC. Replace every placeholder, including the ingest URL and key, with values appropriate to your stream. It is an explanatory template, not a tested command:

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'-stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely and must appear before the relevant -i. -re reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as quickly as the machine can process it. The example uses -safe 0 because playlists often contain absolute paths; omit it when relative paths suffice. Only disable safe-path checks for a playlist you trust. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoders and protocol support you need.
Use stream copy only when the inputs are compatible
If all the clips’ packet streams, timestamps, and output format are compatible, stream copy avoids video and audio re-encoding:

-c copy -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'This is not a universal shortcut for arbitrary MP4 files. If the YouTube preview reports codec, timestamp, resolution, or audio problems, normalize the files or use a re-encoding approach.

4. Set bitrate, keyframes, and audio
YouTube Help’s published encoder recommendations include the following H.264 video figures. The page does not state a publication year, so treat them as the figures shown in its current guidance rather than attaching an invented date.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independently measured results. Select a bitrate that fits your resolution, frame rate, codec, and sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and a connection speed test. The command’s KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_FRAMES must match the output frame rate and desired two-second interval—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.

- For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps.
- For 5.1 AAC, it recommends 48 kHz at 384 kbps.
- For SDR video, YouTube lists Rec. 709.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The example above uses H.264 and AAC; do not assume a chosen codec is available in your FFmpeg build or accepted by every encoder configuration.

5. Start the stream and keep it healthy
Test before relying on a continuous broadcast
- Configure the YouTube event and verify its ingest URL and key.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
- Check stream health and YouTube’s status messages. Test with audio and video motion similar to the intended broadcast.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours; once live streaming is enabled, a stream can go live instantly. Its encoder guidance says YouTube automatically detects selected encoder settings, while custom stream keys can be used to manually select resolution.
Plan for process, host, and network failures
A 24/7 setup depends on more than FFmpeg’s loop option. The host, storage, network connection, and FFmpeg process must remain available. Use a process supervisor suited to your operating system, retain logs, check disk space, and set restart behavior deliberately. Test the recovery behavior under failure conditions and arrange alerting so a stopped process or lost ingest does not go unnoticed. These are operational safeguards, not a universal supervision configuration prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube; neither documentation guarantees uninterrupted service.

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that documented boundary, so do not assume the whole feed will be available as a normal archived video. Plan separately how to retain the story content, and verify YouTube’s current handling before depending on an archive.

7. Troubleshoot common failures
