How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Windows Cloud VM

A practical guide to running OBS on a Windows cloud VM for YouTube Live, including channel requirements, stream keys, bitrate settings, testing, and recovery planning.

To run a YouTube stream around the clock from a Windows cloud virtual machine, keep the VM running, install OBS Studio, configure the video and audio sources you want to broadcast, and connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Then test the feed and plan how you will recover it after a disconnect or VM restart. A cloud VM can host the encoder, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Before you start: check the channel and source

  • Make sure the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do it before scheduling your broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
  • Decide what the VM will broadcast. Prerecorded video, graphics, and browser-based scenes can be configured as sources available inside the VM. A physical camera or HDMI input is a different case: you may need capture hardware, and whether a cloud provider supports passing such a device through to a VM must be confirmed with that provider.
  • Use content you have the right to stream. A live encoder does not grant rights to music, video, game footage, or other material. Check the applicable rights and YouTube rules for your content before leaving a stream unattended. Repeatedly looping material is not a substitute for permission or compliance.
  • Decide who will monitor the stream. A 24/7 goal requires an operations plan for VM persistence, network egress, startup after a reboot, and recovery if OBS or the YouTube connection stops.

Choose and prepare the Windows VM

Pick a Windows VM that can remain running and has enough compute resources and dependable network egress for your specific source, scene complexity, resolution, and frame rate. There is no defensible universal VM size in the cited guidance: the OBS Project’s requirements establish a baseline, not a sizing recommendation for a continuous cloud stream.

The OBS Project lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as baseline system requirements. It also warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Treat those requirements as a starting point, not proof that a particular VM can sustain your intended workload. See the OBS system requirements and current OBS download page.

For a VM with a virtual GPU, verify what graphics and hardware-encoding capabilities the provider actually exposes. YouTube notes that NVIDIA GPUs include hardware-based NVENC, but that does not establish that a given cloud VM includes a compatible GPU. If you use a prerecorded file or browser scene, check that the source is still available after reconnecting to the VM and after a reboot.

Install OBS and build the broadcast scene

  1. Install OBS Studio. Download it from the OBS Project and follow its Windows installation guidance.
  2. Create a scene and add sources. Add the media, graphics, browser source, or other inputs your broadcast needs. Confirm that video is visible and that the intended audio source is audible in OBS’s meters. If the source is a local file, keep it in a location that remains available to OBS.
  3. Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose the base canvas, output resolution, and frame rate appropriate for your content and VM. Avoid selecting a higher output than the VM and its egress can sustain.
  4. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard as a starting point, then perform a sustained test with the real scene and sources. A short idle test may not reveal load caused by motion, browser scenes, or other complex sources.
  5. Check audio and scene transitions. Confirm that audio is not muted or routed to an unintended device, and verify that scene changes do not expose a blank or unintended view.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select one you intend to reuse. Set its visibility and other stream options there.
  2. Find the server URL and stream key for that stream in Live Control Room. Use the destination and key YouTube provides; do not copy a key from an unrelated stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or a custom RTMP destination as appropriate, and enter the server URL and stream key. Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection; details are in its guidance on encrypting a stream using RTMPS and managing live stream settings.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public screenshot, shared OBS profile, public log, or command example. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  5. Start OBS’s stream output and wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check the preview and stream health before starting the public broadcast.

Choose bitrate, codec, and keyframe settings

Use YouTube’s encoder settings for the codec and output resolution you actually intend to send. The following figures are YouTube Help’s H.264 values, current when accessed on 2026-10-03; “minimum” and “recommended” are separate columns, not interchangeable targets.

Output H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 bitrate figures, not a guarantee that a VM’s network or encoder can sustain them. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; its encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Measure from the VM’s network path where possible, then test under the real streaming workload. Leave headroom rather than choosing a bitrate that merely matches a best-case speed test.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. The recommended bitrate varies by codec and resolution, so use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the chosen combination rather than carrying an H.264 number over to another codec.

Test the stream and plan for continuous operation

  1. Run a test with representative content. Include the real audio and enough motion to exercise the encoder. Verify the source, audio, and transitions rather than testing only a static scene.
  2. Check Live Control Room before going public. Confirm that the preview shows the expected picture and sound, then review YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
  3. Run an extended test. Observe CPU/GPU load, network stability, and output quality at the intended resolution and frame rate. A sustained test is more informative than a brief connection check.
  4. Decide how you will recover. Determine who will notice a stopped stream, how the VM and OBS will be brought back, and how the stream will be checked after reconnection. The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish a provider-specific Windows Task Scheduler recipe, watchdog, restart supervisor, or guaranteed unattended recovery procedure.
  5. Check the provider’s VM terms and network details. Confirm that the instance can remain running, what happens on host maintenance or restart, and any relevant egress limits or charges. These differ by provider and region.

YouTube recommends testing, reviewing the preview and stream health, and monitoring stream quality. A VM and OBS are components of a setup, not an uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
The stream does not appear in Live Control Room Stream destination, key, or channel eligibility Confirm that OBS uses the server URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream. Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions; first-time enablement may still be processing.
Live Control Room receives no signal OBS output or network path Confirm OBS is actively streaming, inspect its connection status, and verify the VM has network access to the selected YouTube ingest destination. Re-enter the correct key privately if needed.
Video stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health Bitrate, egress stability, or encoder load Compare the output against YouTube’s codec-specific settings, test upload capacity from the VM, and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the workload cannot sustain the current output.
Picture is present but audio is missing OBS audio source or routing Check OBS audio meters and the selected source/device, then test again with representative audio before returning to the live stream.
The broadcast stops after a VM restart or disconnect Recovery and startup procedure Reconnect to the VM, verify the source and OBS state, and restore the stream using the intended operator procedure. Confirm provider restart behavior and test recovery in advance; do not assume OBS alone will relaunch and resume the YouTube broadcast.
A camera or capture device is unavailable inside the VM Device access or passthrough support Ask the cloud provider whether the required device access is supported. If not, use a source available within the VM or a streaming workflow designed for that physical input.
