To keep recorded Orthodox services live on YouTube around the clock, use a playback system and encoder that continuously send an authorized recording or playlist to a YouTube live broadcast. YouTube does not document a setting that automatically loops recordings indefinitely; the playback and encoding source must keep running, and someone should monitor stream health.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check its status in YouTube Studio before planning the broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Recordings and music that the parish has the necessary rights to rebroadcast, along with an agreed approach to attendee notice and consent.
- A playback system and encoder that can run continuously, a reliable internet connection, and a person or team responsible for monitoring and responding to problems.
- A plan for viewers to find the broadcast and, if a complete archive matters, a separate recording strategy for streams longer than 12 hours.
This is an operational guide, not legal advice. Rights, privacy, safeguarding, and broadcast requirements depend on local law, diocesan policy, and the specific recordings. Orthodox-specific guidance cited below is from the Orthodox Church in America (OCA); other jurisdictions may have different rules.
Prepare recordings, rights, and attendee consent
Check the rights in each recording
Make a playlist only from recordings the parish is authorized to stream. Keep track of who controls the recording and the rights in its music, chant, images, readings, and other incorporated material. YouTube says providers are responsible for necessary rights, including music rights; possession of an old recording, a church-owned copy, or a general parish music license should not be assumed to cover a continuous public rebroadcast.
Ask the relevant rights holders about the intended use: continuous public streaming, geographic availability, monetization if applicable, and whether the stream will remain archived. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist; archived streams may also receive Content ID claims. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and YouTube’s Terms of Service.

Set a clear filming and consent process
Follow the parish’s jurisdiction and diocesan policy. OCA guidance recommends informing parishioners when videotaping occurs, posting signs when worship is distributed online or by broadcast, and obtaining signed releases from adults and from guardians of minors who may be filmed. Consider camera framing or no-camera areas, keep sensitive pastoral situations out of frame, and communicate a practical way for people to avoid appearing. The OCA guidance is available in its Guidelines for Clergy Use of Online Social Networking.
Streaming is a pastoral choice as well as a technical one. The OCA advises parishes to keep the purpose of live-streaming centered on drawing the faithful into prayer and worship, rather than merely giving people something to watch: “Live Streaming has never been easier than it is today”.

Set up the continuous playback and YouTube broadcast
1. Choose what will keep sending the feed
Use a playback system that can move through the chosen recordings continuously and send the output to an encoder. A local computer is one possible approach, but it must remain powered, connected, and functioning for the stream to continue. The YouTube documentation describes the incoming encoder feed and its monitoring; it does not specify a particular computer, product, cloud provider, or automatic 24/7 playlist feature.
2. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a broadcast or select the scheduled broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the broadcast’s stream key and ingestion details into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it outside the people who operate the stream.
- Start the encoder’s outgoing feed. Check that the incoming preview appears in Live Control Room and review stream-health messages before starting the viewer-facing broadcast.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio when the preview and health indicators are satisfactory. The encoder feed and the broadcast are related but distinct YouTube resources: the broadcast is what viewers see.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the incoming live stream, its ingestion address and health/status fields, and the broadcast resource. You can also consult YouTube’s encoder-based live-streaming help.

3. Use compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live-streaming workflows. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Select the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec and the stable upload bandwidth available to the parish. YouTube transcodes live streams for different playback formats, so viewers’ playback quality may differ from the encoder’s input.
Encoder recommendations can change. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings at setup time rather than relying on a fixed bitrate figure copied from an older guide.

4. Test and assign responsibility
Before a public launch, test representative audio and movement, inspect the preview, and monitor stream health. Decide who will respond to a stopped encoder, internet outage, copyright warning, or silent or broken source. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; a 24/7 plan should make that responsibility explicit rather than assuming the feed will always recover by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Schedule the stream and plan for archives
Schedule the broadcast and give parishioners a stable channel or event link. Decide whether live chat is appropriate; if enabled, assign moderation. YouTube Studio provides tools for managing upcoming and past live streams. Its live-stream production guide says streams up to 12 hours are automatically archived as video on demand and advises teams to record longer streams separately for manual upload.

Do not promise a complete YouTube archive for a 24-hour broadcast on the basis of that guide. YouTube’s documentation is not a guarantee of current behavior for every account; check Live Control Room and make a separate recording if a complete archive is important. Shorter broadcasts are another option if the parish needs distinct, complete recordings.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and the computer at the parish does not have to remain on. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Any plan includes the same product; only the billing length changes.
- Nothing has to stay running at the parish; playback runs in the cloud.
- Uploaded material streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. For Indian parishes and creators, UPI is supported; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans, then start the free first day.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified or has a recent live-streaming restriction. | Check live eligibility in YouTube Studio and confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and 90-day restriction requirements. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending a feed, or its ingestion details or stream key are incorrect. | Check the selected broadcast’s ingestion details and key in the encoder, confirm the encoder is running, then wait for the incoming preview and health status. |
| The stream stops or receives a copyright warning | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel for Content ID. | Review the recording’s rights and YouTube notice; contact the relevant rights holder about the actual use and allowlisting where applicable. Do not assume a general license resolves every recording or territory. |
| Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync | The playback source or encoder audio path may be misconfigured. | Test the same source before launch, inspect audio in the incoming preview, and verify the encoder uses an audio format supported by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3. |
| The picture freezes or the feed ends | Playback, encoding, power, or internet may have stopped. | Check the playback source and encoder, then inspect YouTube stream health. Assign an operator to restart the failed component and confirm the preview returns before resuming the broadcast. |
| The 24-hour stream is missing part of its archive | The cited YouTube production guide describes automatic archiving for streams up to 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive beyond that duration. | Record separately for manual upload or split programming into shorter broadcasts if a complete archive is needed. |
Encoder settings and YouTube policies can change, so confirm the current guidance and account status when setting up the broadcast.
