In macOS, enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off; this is not the same as putting the computer into system sleep. A Mac in system sleep cannot keep encoding and sending a live stream.
Set up the Mac mini to stay awake with its display off

Connect the Mac mini to reliable power. Open System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Apple documents this option for desktop Macs; available settings can vary by Mac. Preventing or delaying sleep may increase power consumption. Apple Support: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac.

Set when the display turns off separately in System Settings > Lock Screen. Turning off the display does not require putting the Mac to sleep. Labels and available options may differ by macOS version and model.

Keep the Mac connected to power and a stable network, and avoid shutting it down or choosing Apple menu > Sleep while the stream is running. The intended setup is an awake Mac with a dark display, not a sleeping Mac.

Create the YouTube live stream and connect an encoder

Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream in the Live Control Room. If live streaming has never been enabled on the channel, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders, such as OBS, and standalone hardware encoders. Its encoder directory describes OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge. The right choice depends on what you want to broadcast and how you prefer to operate the setup.

In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for your stream. The key connects the encoder’s output to your channel, so treat it like a password: do not publish it, share it, or leave it visible in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before continuing.

Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and status. Follow the on-screen flow to go live if YouTube requires confirmation for that stream. Confirm that the preview is receiving video and audio before relying on the setup unattended.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
Run a rehearsal long enough to check the full chain, not just the encoder’s start button. Turn the display off, then confirm the Mac remains awake, the encoder is still sending, and YouTube continues receiving the stream. Check that power and network connections are secure and that no scheduled shutdown, restart, or sleep action will interrupt the session.
This is an operational checklist, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service. Apple and YouTube do not promise a Mac mini will stream continuously without interruption, and no uptime figure is established for this setup. A local stream depends on the Mac, encoder, power, network, and YouTube connection all continuing to work.
What a 24/7 broadcast means for YouTube archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a 24-hour broadcast. If the Mac sleeps or the stream stops
The display turns off and the stream ends

Recheck System Settings > Energy and make sure Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off is enabled.

Verify that the Mac did not enter system sleep and that the encoder is still open and actively sending.
The Mac wakes unexpectedly or will not sleep when expected
Apple recommends checking sleep settings and notes that background activity can affect sleep or wake behavior. Investigate sharing services, apps accessing a disk, Spotlight indexing, connected storage or other devices, and activity that may wake the Mac. YouTube stops receiving the stream

Check whether the encoder is still running and whether it reports a connection problem.

Inspect the network connection and power, then check the Live Control Room for the stream’s current status.

If you changed streams or replaced a key, confirm the encoder is using the matching server URL and stream key for the current YouTube broadcast.
