How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Linux with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg on a Linux machine that stays powered and connected. For a stream that can survive unattended, combine a real-time FFmpeg loop with YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, a process supervisor such as systemd, output-recovery options, and ongoing checks in YouTube Live Control Room. None of these guarantees 24/7 uptime if the host, network, source file, or YouTube event fails.

What you need before starting

  • A Linux host that can remain on, connected to the internet, and able to read the media file. A sleeping laptop or an FFmpeg process tied to a terminal you close is not a dependable unattended setup.
  • FFmpeg installed with support for the input media and output options you plan to use. Check the installed build and test the exact command on that host.
  • A YouTube live stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room, plus its stream URL and stream key.
  • A source video whose codecs, audio, keyframe cadence, and container behavior are suitable for the chosen ingest settings—or a plan to transcode it.

This guide covers a prerecorded file. A continuous broadcast is an operating goal, not something FFmpeg alone can guarantee.

Set up the YouTube live stream and ingest profile

Create the event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream using an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings into your FFmpeg configuration. The key authorizes an encoder to send video to the event; treat it like a password. Avoid exposing it in published material, logs, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube’s stream settings, as described in Manage live stream settings.
  3. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted extension to RTMP, when using an RTMPS endpoint provided by YouTube.

Choose codec, bitrate, and keyframe settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingest, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually intend to send; the figures below are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee about your Linux host or connection.

H.264 profile Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings page retrieved in 2026. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the profile you select. If upload stability is uncertain, start with a more modest supported target rather than assuming the recommended rate will be sustainable.

Build and test the FFmpeg loop

Use the right approach for the source

At a high level, FFmpeg must read the file at real-time speed, repeat it, and mux the outgoing audio and video for the RTMP-family endpoint. Stream-copying can avoid re-encoding, but only use it when the source streams are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest profile, including codecs, audio format, keyframe cadence, and container behavior. Otherwise, transcode and set the output codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, pixel format, and audio parameters to match YouTube’s current guidance.

There is no universally correct command for every file or FFmpeg build: input formats and supported encoders differ. Inspect the source and your installed FFmpeg capabilities, then construct and test the command for that media and endpoint. The key safety rules are to keep the key private, send at real-time rate rather than racing through the file, and verify that the resulting stream is accepted by the event before relying on it unattended.

Add recovery for temporary output failures

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer pattern that can continue processing at real-time rate during temporary output failures and attempt recovery every second. Its example uses -f fifo -fifo_format flv, -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1 before mapping streams to an RTMP destination. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the full example and option behavior, and test it against your installed version and YouTube endpoint. This is an output-recovery mechanism, not proof that recovery will succeed in every failure or that the stream will remain healthy indefinitely.

Verify before leaving it unattended

  1. Start the stream while you can observe both FFmpeg output and the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check that YouTube’s preview receives the expected picture and sound, then inspect stream-health messages.
  3. Test with motion and audio similar to what the actual broadcast will contain. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring quality in its encoder guidance and live-streaming tips.
  4. Confirm that the file loops as expected and that FFmpeg logs show no recurring input, encoding, or output errors before treating the setup as ready.

Keep FFmpeg running on Linux

Use a service manager such as systemd if your distribution uses it. A service can start after boot, restart a process that exits, and keep logs available outside an interactive shell. It does not restore a dead host, repair an unreadable source file, renew a compromised key, fix a sustained network outage, or resolve a YouTube-side interruption. Unit-file syntax and service behavior vary by distribution, so validate the configuration on the target machine and test it after reboot.

Plan upload capacity and replay behavior

Leave bandwidth headroom

Measure sustained upload capacity; download speed is not the relevant limit for sending the stream. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom and says to account for both primary and backup bitrate. Keep the configured bitrate within capacity that remains available during normal network sharing and congestion. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Do not assume a multi-day stream will archive as one replay

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish an automatic archive for a single uninterrupted stream that reaches or exceeds 12 hours. If the replay matters, plan a suitable recording or stream-segmentation strategy and verify the current platform behavior instead of relying on a multi-day broadcast to produce one complete replay. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong or reset stream key, incorrect stream URL, unsupported output profile, or an unavailable network route. Recheck the event’s URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the endpoint and FFmpeg output configuration, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
Stream starts but YouTube reports poor health or viewers see interruptions Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, bitrate is too high for the connection, or the source/encoding profile is unsuitable. Compare sustained upload capacity with the configured bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; check stream-health messages and lower the target if needed.
Video works but audio is missing or unstable The source audio stream is absent, incompatible, or incorrectly mapped or encoded. Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg mapping/encoding; test with representative audio and confirm sound in the Live Control Room preview.
FFmpeg exits and the stream stays offline The process ended because of an input, encoder, host, or other failure. Read the service and FFmpeg logs to identify the failing layer. Use a tested systemd restart policy for process exits; recovery of the process does not fix the underlying cause.
Output recovery keeps retrying without restoring the broadcast The remote endpoint or network may remain unavailable, or the event/key may no longer accept the connection. Check network reachability, the event state, key validity, and FFmpeg logs. FIFO recovery attempts cannot guarantee that a persistent fault will resolve.
The host stops streaming after a reboot or sleep The host is powered off, sleeping, disconnected, or the service is not enabled or configured for startup. Use an always-on host, enable and validate the relevant service for the installed distribution, and test startup after a controlled reboot.

DIY Linux hosting or a managed cloud stream?

A self-managed Linux host gives you control over the encoder, files, and service setup, but you carry responsibility for power, network, process supervision, logs, recovery, and testing. A rented server moves the machine off-site but still leaves configuration and monitoring to you. A managed service reduces the need to keep your own computer running; verify that any provider supports the exact prerecorded-video-to-YouTube workflow you need.
