You can run a prerecorded study-video stream around the clock by looping a media file with FFmpeg on a Linux VPS and sending it to YouTube Live. First confirm your channel is eligible, use media you have rights to stream, and configure the encoder to match YouTube Studio’s current settings. A loop repeats the input; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service, so test the complete setup before launching it publicly.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s current guidance says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; age requirements also apply. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before building the server workflow.
- A Linux VPS that can run FFmpeg continuously, store the media file and sustain the required outbound traffic.
- A prerecorded video file and any accompanying music, images, or animations that you created or are authorized to stream.
- Access to YouTube Studio to configure the live stream and retrieve its current ingestion endpoint and stream key.
YouTube Studio labels and eligibility requirements can change. Use the values displayed in your account rather than relying on copied screenshots or old setup instructions.
Prepare the video and confirm rights
Use original material or obtain the rights needed for a public live stream. The permission needs to cover every element in the file, including music, loops, still images and animation. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects it. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist; having a license or seeing a “royalty-free” label does not by itself prevent automated enforcement. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Check that the file plays correctly from beginning to end before uploading it to the server. A loop can expose abrupt visual or audio cuts at the file boundary, so inspect the transition between the last and first frames and listen for gaps, pops, or a change in volume.

Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or configure a live stream using the live-stream workflow available to your channel.
- Choose the stream’s visibility and schedule using your intended launch plan. For initial checks, use the available private or unlisted controls rather than starting with a public broadcast.
- Open the stream’s encoder settings and note the current ingestion URL, stream key, target resolution and frame rate, and recommended encoder settings. The exact endpoint and application path should come from YouTube Studio.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Do not put it in a public script repository, paste it into a public support post, or include it in a command you share.
You can configure a stream manually for an encoder. The YouTube Live Streaming API is an optional route for managing broadcasts and stream resources; it is not required simply to send an encoder feed. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview for the API approach.
Choose a VPS for sustained streaming
There is no universal VPS size for this task. Requirements depend chiefly on whether FFmpeg can pass through compatible audio and video or must transcode them, the stream’s bitrate, the amount of storage needed for the file, the server’s network route, and the provider’s transfer and billing terms.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Outbound transfer: Calculate expected monthly data from the actual configured bitrate and continuous run time, allowing for audio and protocol overhead. Compare that estimate with the plan’s sustained transfer allowance and egress charges.
- CPU: Transcoding uses CPU; passing through compatible streams can avoid that work. Do not size a plan based on the assumption that a specific file can be copied without checking its codecs and target settings.
- Network and region: Compare network quality and server location relative to your operators and the YouTube ingestion endpoint selected by Studio.
- Storage and operations: Check space for the media and any logs, plus the provider’s restart, monitoring, and support terms.
- Total cost: Confirm the current price and billing conditions directly with the VPS provider. No particular host or plan is established as suitable for every stream.
A constant bitrate makes transfer demand grow with time. Use your selected bitrate and the provider’s current terms to calculate the actual monthly cost rather than treating a generic data estimate as a fixed requirement.
Install FFmpeg and loop the input
Install FFmpeg using the package source or installation method supported by your Linux distribution, then check the installed binary’s version and local help. FFmpeg documentation changes over time, and the available options can depend on the installed build. Its documentation describes -stream_loop -1 as an infinite input loop. Because it is an input option, place it with the input it controls.

The loop option handles repeated input; it does not determine the right stream mapping, audio handling, re-encoding or stream-copy choice, timestamp behavior, or reconnect policy for your particular file and FFmpeg build. Those details depend on your media and YouTube’s current target settings. Do not assume a command copied from another setup is production-ready. Check the file’s streams, build a command for the codecs and target you selected, and validate it in a short test before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its RTMPS guidance requires an RTMPS URL, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and application path, and port 443. Take the endpoint shown by YouTube Studio and follow the current RTMPS ingestion guidance; do not substitute an endpoint or path from an old example.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the resolution and frame rate you chose. The guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. Recommended bitrates vary with resolution and frame rate, so check the live table when configuring the stream rather than applying one bitrate to every upload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full stream before launch
- Start with the intended media file and a private or unlisted test broadcast.
- Check YouTube Studio’s preview to confirm it is receiving video and audio.
- Confirm that the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate align with the encoder guidance for your target.
- Watch and listen across at least one complete loop boundary to check synchronization, gaps, pops, abrupt cuts or timestamp problems.
- Review YouTube Studio for policy or copyright warnings before making the stream public.
- Observe the VPS and encoder process during the test: check that the process remains active and the outbound connection stays usable. Test any restart or monitoring behavior you configure rather than assuming it will recover correctly.
This test is a practical safeguard, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. A host outage, network interruption, FFmpeg failure or platform-side interruption can still stop a continuous process.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio does not receive a feed | Wrong endpoint or application path, an incorrect or stale stream key, blocked outbound traffic, or an encoder connection problem. | Copy the current endpoint and key from Studio, verify RTMPS and port 443 requirements, and check the VPS network and FFmpeg output. |
| The stream arrives but video or audio is missing | The file’s streams may not be mapped as expected, or the audio/video codec may not match the encoder configuration. | Inspect the media file’s streams and the encoder log; verify mapping and supported codecs against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| The picture or sound breaks at the loop boundary | The source file may have an abrupt ending, incompatible timestamps, or audio behavior that does not join cleanly when repeated. | Inspect the end-to-start transition in the source and test the actual looping command in a private or unlisted broadcast. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | The VPS, network, FFmpeg process or YouTube connection may have been interrupted. Infinite input looping does not restart a failed process or guarantee uptime. | Check server and encoder logs, provider status and outbound connectivity. Configure and test process monitoring or restart behavior appropriate to your server. |
| YouTube interrupts the live stream | A copyright or other platform warning may apply; third-party content can be detected during a live broadcast. | Review Studio’s warning and the rights for all material in the stream. For licensed third-party content, confirm with the owner whether Content ID allowlisting is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer at home can stay off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card.
Plans include one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same across plans; only the billing length changes. You can pay for a day, a week, a month, six months or a year and cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can FFmpeg loop a prerecorded video indefinitely?
Yes. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping. It repeats the input, but does not by itself keep a failed process or connection running.
