Use the spare PC as the streaming and encoding machine: route your gaming PC’s video and audio to it, add the incoming signal in OBS, then send a 3840×2160, 60 fps stream to YouTube. A two-PC setup can separate streaming work from gameplay, but it does not guarantee better quality. The spare PC, capture path, encoder, and upload connection must all support the target.
Choose a one-PC or dual-PC setup
YouTube does not require a second computer. If one PC can capture or render the game, encode 4K60, and maintain the required upload bitrate without disrupting play, OBS can stream directly from it. A spare PC makes sense when you want to move encoding and broadcast tasks off the gaming machine, but you must get the source PC’s picture and audio into the spare PC.
| Setup | Signal path | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One PC | Game and other sources are captured in OBS on the same computer that encodes and streams. | Whether that computer can run the game, capture the scene, and encode the chosen 4K60 codec at once. |
| Dual PC | The gaming PC sends video and audio to the spare PC; OBS on the spare PC captures, encodes, and streams. | Capture-card input and capture specifications, host connection and bandwidth, audio routing and sync, and the spare PC’s encoder support. |
A capture card is one common way to carry the source PC’s signal to a separate streaming PC. In a typical arrangement, the source output is duplicated to the gaming display and capture device, and the capture feed is added to OBS. Exact routing depends on the graphics output and card; follow the manuals for the hardware you actually have. A secondary dual-PC setup guide illustrates this general signal path, but should not be treated as confirmation of current hardware compatibility.
Verify that the spare PC and capture path can do 4K60
Do not infer 4K60 capture from a product listing that only says “4K60 passthrough.” Passthrough describes sending a signal onward to a display; it does not by itself establish that the card captures 4K60 to the host computer. Check the exact card and PC combination before building the scene.

- Source PC: Confirm that its GPU output and display/capture arrangement can send the desired resolution, frame rate, and any required HDR signal to both destinations.
- Spare PC: Confirm that the exact CPU or GPU encoder supports the chosen codec and can sustain 4K60 encoding while OBS handles the scene. Requirements vary by hardware and software; there is no safe universal minimum CPU, GPU, or RAM specification here.
- Network: Confirm that the streaming PC’s internet connection can sustain the codec-specific bitrate with headroom. The ingest recommendation is not proof that your connection or encoder can hold it.
OBS’s official knowledge base links to setup, system-requirement, and Game Capture guidance. Use the guide and requirements relevant to your OBS version, operating system, and capture hardware. Installing OBS alone does not establish that the machine can encode 4K60.
Connect the source PC and configure OBS
- Choose the signal path. For a dual-PC setup, connect the gaming PC’s video output to the capture device and arrange the display output as required by the card and GPU. Connect or route source audio as described in the card’s manual. If streaming from one PC, add the game and audio sources directly in OBS instead.
- Add the capture source. On the spare PC, open OBS and add the capture device as a source. Select the supported input resolution and frame rate. Add and test the audio source as well; seeing the game is not enough if its sound is missing or out of sync.
- Set the video output. In OBS, configure the canvas and output for 3840×2160 and 60 fps. Check that the capture feed itself is delivering that format; scaling a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate input to 4K60 does not create the missing detail or motion.
- Select a supported encoder and codec. Choose an encoder available on the spare PC and a codec accepted by YouTube. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 for live encoding; which choices appear in OBS depends on the hardware and software in use. For manufacturer-specific context on NVIDIA hardware, see NVIDIA’s OBS NVENC guide; its guidance is not a compatibility guarantee for other systems.
- Set the YouTube connection. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it on stream or share it. YouTube’s encoder setup page lists encoder options and setup guidance.
Set YouTube’s live ingest settings for 4K60
YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. Keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically in Live Control Room, but configure and verify the output in OBS rather than relying on detection to correct a mismatch.

| Video codec | 4K/2160p at 60 fps: recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate in YouTube’s table |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest figures on its live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. They are not upload recommendations for prerecorded videos, nor a guarantee that your PC or internet connection can sustain the recommended rate. If your setup cannot reliably hold the target, lower the settings or use the 4K30 fallback below rather than accepting a stream full of dropped frames.
For a fallback at 4K/2160p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 30 Mbps recommended (8 Mbps minimum) for AV1 or HEVC, and 42 Mbps recommended (11 Mbps minimum) for H.264. Switching to 30 fps changes the target; it is not a 4K60 stream.

YouTube’s advanced SDR encoder settings also specify square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. The exact controls available and their names vary between OBS encoders, so use only settings exposed by the encoder you selected and verify the resulting stream. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance for 5.1 audio specifies AAC, 48 kHz, and 384 kbps.
Test the whole stream before going live
YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the actual event, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Test the complete chain—not just an OBS preview—so you can catch capture, encoding, audio, and network problems before viewers rely on the stream.

- Check that YouTube receives 3840×2160 at 60 fps and the expected codec.
- Play a scene with comparable movement to the broadcast and check for dropped frames or encoding lag.
- Listen for missing audio, duplicate audio, incorrect levels, or a delay between picture and sound.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages while testing and while live.
- Confirm that the stream remains stable at the chosen bitrate. If it does not, lower the bitrate or use a lower frame-rate target; use a wired network connection as a troubleshooting step if Wi-Fi stability is the issue.
YouTube automatically transcodes live video into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured stream from your encoder. YouTube also says 4K/2160 streams do not have the low-latency option and run at normal latency; plan audience interaction accordingly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use HDR only if every part of the chain supports it
HDR is a separate, more demanding setup—not a default consequence of streaming in 4K. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions state that HDR live streaming currently requires HEVC and describe additional OBS configuration. The source, capture device, encoder profile, bit depth, color format, color space, and stream-key configuration all need to match the HDR workflow. If any part is uncertain, establish a stable SDR stream first and consult YouTube’s HDR instructions for the exact configuration.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot select 4K60, or the capture feed is lower resolution or frame rate. | Capture-card capture limit, source output, host interface, or capture settings. | Check the card’s capture specification separately from passthrough, confirm the source output mode, and verify the connected port or slot meets the card’s requirements. |
| Gameplay or stream stutters, or OBS reports dropped frames. | Encoder load or network stability. | Check OBS and YouTube stream-health messages to distinguish encoding trouble from connection trouble. Reduce output load or bitrate, or change to 4K30 if 60 fps cannot be sustained. |
| Video is present but game audio is missing or delayed. | Capture-device audio selection, source-PC routing, or duplicate audio paths. | Check the capture device’s audio configuration and the source selected in OBS; test sync and remove unintended duplicate audio sources. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem. | Stream key, protocol, encoder settings, or upload stability. | Verify the stream key in OBS, use RTMPS where available, check CBR and the keyframe interval, and ensure the connection can hold the selected bitrate. Do not expose or reuse a compromised key. |
| HDR looks incorrect or the stream is not accepted as HDR. | Mismatch among source, card, encoder, color settings, and stream-key setup. | Use YouTube’s HDR instructions and confirm each part of the chain supports the required HEVC configuration. Otherwise switch to SDR. |
