How to Run a Black-Screen Rain Sounds Stream on YouTube with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg can send a black video feed paired with your rain recording to YouTube Live. You’ll need a verified channel with live streaming enabled, FFmpeg, an audio file you have permission to stream, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The command below is an adaptable example—not a guaranteed, tested recipe for every operating system or FFmpeg build—so test it privately or unlisted before making the stream public.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guide.
  • FFmpeg installed and available from your command line. FFmpeg options and quoting can differ by operating system and build.
  • A rain audio file in a format your FFmpeg build can read. Confirm that its license allows live streaming; the fact that a recording is labeled “rain sounds” does not establish its rights.
  • A reliable upload connection that can sustain your chosen outgoing bitrate for the whole broadcast.

If you have a scheduled stream, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream. YouTube displays the stream URL and stream key in the stream’s settings; copy those values into your encoder setup. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts. YouTube documents the workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.

Build an FFmpeg command for black video and rain audio

FFmpeg’s color source can generate a black video input, while a separate audio input supplies the rain sound. FFmpeg documents these building blocks in its command-line documentation and filters documentation. The following is a command structure to adapt, not a verified command for your machine:

ffmpeg [video-input-options] -f lavfi -i "color=c=black:s=1280x720:r=30"
  [audio-input-options] -i "rain-audio-file"
  [mapping-and-encoding-options]
  -f flv "rtmps-or-rtmp-ingest-url/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the placeholders with options appropriate for your FFmpeg build, the format of your recording, and the ingest details shown by YouTube. The video input shown generates a 1280×720 black picture at 30 frames per second; it does not select or encode the audio, set YouTube-compatible rate control, or determine how long the process runs. Do not paste a real stream key into a public script, screenshot, repository, or article. Use the RTMPS ingest option shown by YouTube where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed in transit. The example’s final output format is FLV, but the source information does not validate this exact command end to end. See the official FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the video and audio encoding

Use YouTube’s ordinary live encoder recommendations as the baseline: H.264 video with constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a keyframe about every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a claim that every bitrate or resolution will work on every connection. Consult the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page and choose an upload bitrate your connection can sustain.

Choose how the broadcast ends

The example does not specify a duration or stop condition. Decide whether this is a finite broadcast or an unattended, continuing process, and configure your command and operating environment accordingly. Do not assume that the sample runs indefinitely just because its picture is black. YouTube automatically archives live streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer continuous stream will be archived as one video. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Test the stream and choose latency

  1. Set the YouTube stream’s visibility to private or unlisted for the test, as appropriate.
  2. Start FFmpeg and check that its local output shows no input, encoding, or connection errors.
  3. In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview is active, stream health is acceptable, and the rain audio is audible. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring the stream’s audio and video; see its live streaming tips and encoder guidance.
  4. Only after the test works should you switch to the intended audience visibility and run the broadcast.

For rain ambience without live conversation, normal latency is a sensible starting choice: faster interaction is usually not useful for this format. YouTube says lower latency can help when responding to chat, but can increase buffering. Choose based on whether interaction speed matters more than buffering risk; see Understand live streaming latency.

Keep the stream running: local setup or cloud

With FFmpeg on your own computer, the machine and its internet connection must remain available for as long as you want the encoder to run. Before relying on it unattended, consider whether the computer can stay on for the intended duration, whether the upload can sustain the selected bitrate, and how you will monitor and restart the process if it stops. A remote host is another way to keep an encoder process running, but compare its cost, upload capacity, monitoring, and recovery arrangements rather than assuming any host is suitable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; the right operating setup depends on your needs.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: check that FFmpeg is using the current stream URL and key from the selected YouTube stream, that the key has not been reset, and that FFmpeg reports a successful connection. Protect the key as a credential.
  • The preview appears but the audio is missing: confirm that FFmpeg is reading the intended audio file, that the command maps the audio input to the output, and that the file plays locally. Verify sound in the Live Control Room test before going public.
  • The stream disconnects or buffers: test the upload connection and lower the outgoing bitrate or resolution if it cannot sustain the current settings. YouTube recommends matching bitrate to a tested connection and inspecting stream health; see its encoder settings guide.
  • The command fails before connecting: review input paths, quotation marks, the installed FFmpeg build’s available inputs and codecs, and the ordering of options. The example is only a structure; it is not guaranteed to run unchanged on every system.
  • The stream stops sooner than expected: inspect the audio file’s duration and your command’s stop behavior. The sample does not define an infinite audio loop or a broadcast duration; add and verify the behavior you need rather than assuming it.
  • Viewers report buffering despite a healthy feed: check the latency choice and connection stability. For a non-interactive ambience stream, normal latency avoids choosing lower latency solely for faster chat response; YouTube notes the tradeoff on its latency help page.

Copyright and channel rules still apply

A black screen does not make the audio exempt from copyright. Use a recording you created or have permission to stream, and check the recording’s own license for live streaming and any monetized use you plan. YouTube also advises creators to confirm rights to the audio and video they broadcast in its encoder setup guide. Separately, a technically successful stream does not guarantee that a channel or video meets YouTube’s other policies or monetization requirements; check the current rules that apply to your channel before publishing.
