To stream a church service from Docker to YouTube, run FFmpeg in a container with your service’s video and audio sources, YouTube’s current RTMPS ingestion URL and private stream key, and encoder settings matched to your production and tested upload capacity. A container starting successfully is not enough: test the complete camera-to-YouTube path from the venue before the service.

What you need before configuring Docker

  • A Linux host with Docker and a video/audio source available to it. Source devices, capture paths and permissions vary by host.
  • An FFmpeg build in the chosen container that supports the output protocol and encoders in your command. Container images can differ in their compiled-in libraries and codec support.
  • A YouTube Live stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room, with its current RTMPS destination and stream key.
  • A venue internet connection whose upload capacity has been tested under realistic conditions.

YouTube documents the ingestion and encoder requirements; it does not prescribe a particular Docker image, container restart policy or deployment layout. Treat those as choices to verify in your own environment.

Get the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream you intend to use.
  2. Select the intended stream protocol and retrieve the ingestion URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL.
  3. Copy the exact current destination and key into your deployment configuration. Do not assume an endpoint copied from an old guide will still be right.
  4. Inject the key when the container runs, using your deployment’s secret mechanism. Restrict who can read that secret; do not put a real key in a Dockerfile, source repository, shared example or public command history.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443. Keep the URL’s rtmps scheme and host exactly as shown in Live Control Room. The API has primary and backup ingestion-address fields; software using the API should follow those resource fields and protocol-specific format. An API encoder may need to concatenate a stream URL and stream name. For the web Live Control Room workflow, use the exact displayed URL and key.

Choose a protocol: RTMPS for a typical sermon stream

RTMPS

For a normal continuous live service, start with the RTMPS destination YouTube provides. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over an encrypted connection. Confirm that the FFmpeg binary inside your selected image supports RTMPS and the codecs you plan to use; not every image is built with the same protocol and encoder support.

HLS

Consider HLS only when its capabilities meet a specific need, such as HDR or a codec YouTube does not support over RTMP. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream and consequently has higher latency. YouTube’s HLS setup calls for HTTPS, TS segments, a rolling playlist and segment lengths of one to four seconds. It is a different ingestion setup, not a quality upgrade to apply by default.

Match FFmpeg settings to the service and source

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the actual production; there is no universally best church-service resolution.

H.264 recommended video bitrates

The following are YouTube Help recommendations, not measurements of your venue’s upload capacity. The table reflects the guidance accessed in 2026; check the current encoder-settings page before the event.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These figures apply to H.264 video recommendations. YouTube’s page gives codec-dependent minimum and maximum ranges for H.265 and AV1; consult its current table if using either codec rather than carrying over an H.264 value.

Audio settings

For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced audio settings. For 5.1, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Choose settings appropriate to the audio feed and verify the resulting mix in the YouTube preview.

YouTube also transcodes live streams to make output formats for different devices and network conditions. This does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream.

Build and run the Docker deployment safely

There is no single portable FFmpeg command for every church. Camera device paths, audio capture, hardware encoders, pixel format, input format and key handling depend on the host and source. First confirm that Docker can access the intended devices and that FFmpeg can read them. Then configure the FFmpeg output for the RTMPS destination, compatible audio/video codecs, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.

Use placeholders while designing the command, and supply the real key only at runtime through a protected deployment setting. Do not bake credentials into the image. Before service, verify from inside the selected container that its FFmpeg build recognizes the required input, encoders and RTMPS output protocol. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP output and RTMPS behavior, but it cannot guarantee the capabilities of a third-party image.

Test the entire stream before Sunday

  1. Run a speed test from the venue and confirm that tested upload capacity can sustain the bitrate you chose. Leave practical headroom for network variation and other venue traffic.
  2. Start the actual camera or video source, audio path, Docker container and FFmpeg process together. A container health check alone does not validate the stream.
  3. Send a representative test to YouTube, including speech, movement, and music if the service will use it. Check audio level, sync, picture and framing in YouTube’s preview.
  4. Review YouTube stream-health indicators and messages. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output reliably, lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate as appropriate, then repeat the test.
  5. Where practical, test for a duration that approximates the service and confirm that the process, network and source remain stable.

YouTube’s guidance says to test before going live and to monitor stream health and messages during the event. Recheck the current Control Room destination and platform settings before the service, since URLs, settings and software capabilities can change.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not receive the stream

  • Check that the stream is active in Live Control Room and that the key belongs to that stream.
  • Verify the destination copied from the Control Room, including the rtmps scheme and host. Do not substitute an old URL.
  • Confirm that the key was injected into the running container correctly, without exposing it in logs or shared commands.

SSL error or connection timeout

  • For a persistent SSL error, verify the RTMPS URL and try port 443 as YouTube advises.
  • A timeout may mean the URL is wrong or the encoder lacks RTMPS support. Confirm protocol support in the actual FFmpeg binary inside the image, not merely on the host.

Stuttering, dropped frames or stream-health warnings

  • Compare the chosen bitrate with the venue’s tested upload capacity and reduce output quality/bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • Check that the production’s resolution and frame rate match the settings being sent, and that the container can access the source reliably.
  • Repeat the full venue test; a one-time container start does not establish network stability.

Missing audio, wrong mix or poor synchronization

  • Check that FFmpeg is reading the intended audio input and encoding it with a supported codec such as AAC or MP3.
  • Review the YouTube preview with speech and any music that will be part of the service; confirm channel layout and sample-rate choices, especially if sending 5.1.

HLS setup is delayed or rejected

  • Check that the selected Control Room protocol and destination are for HLS, not RTMPS.
  • Verify HTTPS, TS segment output, a rolling playlist and one-to-four-second segments; expect higher latency than continuous RTMPS delivery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded sermon recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at the church; the cloud loops the uploaded video, not a live camera feed. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. Plans have the same product; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo and plan details. For a live-camera service, use the Docker/FFmpeg path above: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start the free first day.
