You can run a podcast stream on YouTube from a mini PC by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, sending it from OBS over RTMPS, and keeping the computer and network running. For a continuous show, the key work is not just getting the first episode live: build and test the audio/visual scene, verify your channel and stream settings, plan how episodes repeat or change, and decide how you will handle interruptions and archives. A single YouTube event should not be treated as guaranteed to run or archive indefinitely.
What you need before you begin
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled.
- A mini PC that can handle your chosen OBS encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene. There is no universal mini PC specification that guarantees success.
- OBS Studio, an audio source such as a mixer, audio interface, or USB microphone, and a simple visual such as show artwork.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream plus headroom.
- Podcast audio and visuals you have the right to stream. Permission to use the material is separate from whether YouTube accepts the technical stream.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you have never livestreamed, activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch rather than on the day.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live event and choose encoder streaming.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event, or select YouTube in OBS if the integration is available and connect your account. Keep the stream key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Set the event’s title, visibility, and other details, then save or schedule it. Check that the event is visible to the intended audience.
- Start OBS before the scheduled start, allow YouTube’s preview to appear, and inspect the audio, image, and stream-health indicators. Select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
Starting the encoder and starting the public event are separate actions in this workflow. Do not assume that opening OBS alone makes the event live to viewers.
Build a lightweight OBS scene for a podcast
Connect and check the audio
Connect your podcast source and select it in OBS as an audio input. Speak or play a test segment and confirm the meter responds without clipping or dropping out. If the show is prerecorded, make sure the audio source actually plays continuously for the duration you intend to stream. A live microphone or mixer feed and a prerecorded episode loop are different workflows; test the one you plan to use.

Add a visual without overloading the mini PC
Add a still image, episode artwork, or a restrained visualizer so the YouTube player has an intentional picture. Keep animated browser overlays, filters, and other effects to a minimum until the complete stream has been tested. OBS workload varies with sources, filters, browser sources, encoder, resolution, and frame rate; a simple scene is easier to validate on compact hardware.
For prerecorded episodes, arrange the material and transitions in the way your show requires, then test that sequence end to end. Do not assume that a playlist or scene will restart or advance as intended until you have observed it doing so on the actual mini PC.

Configure OBS output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest where available; YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. In OBS, connect the YouTube account or enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use a supported video codec such as H.264 and a supported audio codec. For a conventional SDR stream, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies Rec. 709.
Recommended baseline settings
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Stereo audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose a level the mini PC can sustain and that fits the available upload bandwidth. A static podcast image generally has little motion, but that does not guarantee a particular result at any bitrate.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular mini PC or connection will deliver a stable stream. Check YouTube’s current encoder table when you configure the stream because platform guidance can change.

Choose and validate the mini PC
OBS does not give one minimum mini PC specification that works for every stream. Its guidance warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to an encoder component, but which encoders are available depends on the mini PC’s platform.
- Build the actual scene and select the intended encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Connect the real audio source and run the episode or feed you intend to use.
- Test the complete setup for an extended period appropriate to your intended operating schedule. Watch OBS statistics and logs, and check YouTube’s preview and stream health.
- Only rely on the machine after checking that audio remains present, the scene behaves as intended, and the stream does not accumulate encoding or network problems.
This is a validation method, not a certification of any mini PC model or a claim that a successful test guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Make the connection and daily operation dependable
Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends roughly 20% more available bandwidth than the stream bitrate, leaving room for variation. A wired Ethernet connection is a practical choice for a stationary mini PC, although it is not a stated YouTube requirement.
- Test stream health before announcing the channel or event.
- Check that the audio device remains available after sleep, restart, or reconnection; configure the computer not to sleep during the stream.
- Review operating-system update and reboot behavior so a scheduled restart does not unexpectedly interrupt the show.
- Consider power continuity and network recovery as operational risks; a UPS or backup connection may reduce some risks, but neither guarantees a stream will stay live.
- Decide who will monitor the channel and what to do if OBS, the mini PC, the audio source, or the internet connection fails.
Do not treat automatic reconnection as assured. YouTube says network disruption can break a stream; verify how your own encoder and network behave during a test and have a recovery plan.

Plan for duration, archives, and content rights
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The reviewed guidance does not establish that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full, or that a single event can run indefinitely. If a complete archive matters, consider separate sessions or a separate local recording, and verify the current YouTube rules before launch.
Continuous availability also does not itself establish monetization eligibility. Before looping episodes, music, artwork, clips, or guest audio, confirm you have the necessary rights and that the material complies with YouTube’s rules. Technical ability to rebroadcast something is not permission to do so; no particular content or monetization outcome is guaranteed by this setup.
When a mini PC is the right choice
A local OBS setup gives you direct control over the scene and local equipment, but you maintain the computer, power, audio chain, network, and restart/recovery process. A dedicated hardware encoder or hosted service changes who does that work; compare options by how they handle scheduling or looping, reconnection, archive control, output support, maintenance, and operating cost. YouTube’s encoder options include software, hardware, and cloud services, but no single option is right for every podcast operation.
