To run a podcast as a continuous YouTube live stream from a Windows PC, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send either a live microphone feed or prerecorded episodes from streaming software, and monitor the connection in Live Control Room. A PC-based encoder needs to remain running and connected; YouTube’s documented archive rule is not a promise of indefinite uptime. Choose what “continuous” means for your podcast
There are three practical formats, and they need different input and operating plans:

A YouTube playlist is not automatically an encoder input. If you want episodes to play as a live feed, configure playback on the PC and select that audio/video source in the encoder.
Check YouTube eligibility before setting a start time
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet the platform’s current age requirement; its general live-stream help states a minimum age of 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm your access in YouTube Studio before announcing a broadcast. Set up a Windows PC encoder stream
- Prepare the source. For a live podcast, connect and select your microphone or headset in the encoder. For prerecorded episodes, set up the player or playlist you intend to broadcast and route its audio and video into the encoder. A microphone is optional when you are only playing recordings; YouTube lists microphones as typical equipment for live speaking, not a requirement for prerecorded playback. - Create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. Use the Live Control Room’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Choose video and audio settings. Select a resolution and frame rate your PC and upload connection can sustain. A mostly static podcast visual may not need a high frame rate. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; it recommends RTMPS. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps.
- Use the bitrate for your actual profile. YouTube’s current table lists H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30, among other resolution and frame-rate combinations. Check its encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact combination and codec you select. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can maintain them.
- Check upload capacity and preview. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate. Other devices and users on the same network can consume capacity, so test under realistic conditions. Start sending the feed, then preview it in Live Control Room and verify the picture and audio before starting the public broadcast. Guidance is available in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check stream health and listen for silence, clipping, or interruptions. Keep the PC, encoder, source playback, and internet connection running for as long as the PC-based stream is meant to continue.
Plan around session length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not establish that a single encoder session will run indefinitely or that a longer broadcast will be fully archived. For an around-the-clock schedule, plan controlled sessions and restarts, assign someone to check the feed, and verify current behavior in Studio rather than assuming one Windows session can run forever. Protect the podcast’s rights
Make sure you have rights to every recording, music bed, image, and other material in both the live feed and its archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; it may replace the feed with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if a match remains. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions, which require streamers to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, restrictions in the previous 90 days, age eligibility, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Allow up to 24 hours for initial activation.
- Studio shows no incoming signal: Confirm the encoder’s server field contains the stream URL and that the key matches the current Studio stream. Check that the encoder is actually sending.
- The feed buffers or loses quality: Lower the bitrate or resolution to a profile your PC and connection can sustain, and restore the recommended upload headroom. Retest with other household or office traffic in mind.
- There is no podcast audio: Check the encoder’s selected input and confirm the player or microphone is routed to it. Verify levels in the encoder and listen to the Studio preview.
- The broadcast is interrupted despite having permission: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- The stream or archive ends sooner than expected: Do not treat the under-12-hour archive rule as a guaranteed continuous-stream duration. Check the current Studio status and schedule monitored sessions with planned restarts.
