For a dependable setup, use YouTube’s encoder recommendations, test your actual upload connection, and plan around YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- YouTube says a first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to go live.
- YouTube’s general guidance says streamers must be 16 or older.
- The guidance available here is general, not India-specific. It does not establish additional India-specific restrictions or guarantee that a particular Indian ISP or location can sustain a given bitrate. Test the connection you will actually use.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
Use the OBS Project’s current Ubuntu installation instructions. Its current download page lists the official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. Open Terminal and run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio

sudo apt install obs-studioOBS’s older Linux installation article lists Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, but that older version scope differs from the current download page. If you use an older Ubuntu release, check OBS Project’s supported installation guidance for that release rather than assuming the current PPA instructions apply.
Create a YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new live stream or schedule one. Complete any title, audience, and visibility choices that apply to your broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address for the encoder feed. Treat it like a credential: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to anyone who should not be able to broadcast on your channel.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server, use the stream URL supplied by YouTube with the key. OBS labels can vary slightly by version and service configuration.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and that the preview shows the intended scene and audio before making the broadcast public or relying on it.
If you need to use the same key for multiple broadcasts, YouTube supports creating a custom stream key. Keep it private whether it is reusable or tied to a particular broadcast; anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.

Set a stable OBS profile for YouTube
For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube documents RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. Let YouTube detect the resolution and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to use a custom stream key with manually specified resolution.
Resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate
Choose a resolution and frame rate your Ubuntu computer and upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates include:

These figures are for video, not total network use. Leave room for audio, streaming protocol overhead, other household or office traffic, and any backup stream. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or interruptions.

Keyframes, rate control, and audio
- Rate control: CBR, as YouTube recommends for this baseline.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Video codec: H.264 for the documented SDR baseline.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3.
- Transport: use RTMPS when available for encryption in transit.
Apply these settings in the OBS output and stream configuration. The exact control placement can differ depending on whether OBS is using software encoding, supported hardware encoding, or a service-provided configuration. The sources establish recommended stream settings, not which encoder a particular Ubuntu computer can sustain.
Measure upload capacity instead of guessing
Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and, as far as practical, under the same network conditions you expect during the stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate alone calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation—and audio, overhead, other users, and traffic variation still need consideration. Do not use download speed as a substitute for measured upload speed.
Prefer wired Ethernet where practical, avoid saturating the connection with uploads or downloads, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during testing. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. A UPS for the Ubuntu computer and router is an optional way to help ride through a local power interruption; it cannot prevent an ISP outage.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Build the OBS scene with the actual video, game capture, or other content and audio sources you intend to use.
- Send a test feed and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators.
- Check that motion is smooth, audio is present and intelligible, and the selected resolution and frame rate are arriving as expected.
- Open the watch page on the channel and on a mobile device to verify the viewer experience.
- Monitor the stream during the test rather than relying only on OBS’s indication that it is connected.
YouTube’s event checklist advises configuring the encoder well in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Those are event-production recommendations, not a guarantee that a 24/7 setup will remain connected indefinitely.
Plan sessions around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
YouTube says it may automatically archive a stream shorter than 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its official warning is: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If the archive matters, keep each individual broadcast below 12 hours and retain a local recording as a backup.

Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. If viewers need to rewind or you need a usable recording, do not treat a continuous session as your only copy.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and allow for the possible first-time activation delay.
- Check the stream key and stream URL in OBS against the current broadcast in Live Control Room. If you suspect the key has been exposed or copied incorrectly, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Confirm OBS is set to the intended YouTube service and that the computer has a working network connection.
The stream health is poor or viewers see buffering
- Compare the configured bitrate with measured, sustained upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom plus allowance for audio and other network use.
- Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen profile.
- Check for competing network traffic and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing.
Video stutters or OBS drops frames
The available guidance does not benchmark specific Ubuntu computers. Check whether the selected encoder, resolution, and frame rate can be maintained by your hardware, and test for an extended period before depending on the stream. If the computer cannot sustain the profile, choose a less demanding output and retest.
The stream ends or the archive is missing
Network disruptions can break a stream, and YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Check the encoder connection and stream-health history, plan shorter sessions where an archive matters, and keep a local recording rather than assuming YouTube will provide a complete copy.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for continuous programming
Only stream content you have the rights or permissions to use, including game footage, music, overlays, and other material included in the feed. A live broadcast being technically accepted by OBS does not establish that the content is cleared for YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies for your particular content, and do not assume that permission to stream also guarantees eligibility for monetization or that reused material meets monetization rules.
