You can use a Raspberry Pi as a headless encoder to send a camera feed to YouTube Live without leaving a desktop PC running. Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect a compatible video and audio source, and send the stream URL and secret stream key from the Pi. A Pi 4 has dedicated H.264 encoding hardware; a Pi 5 relies on software encoding, so test your exact setup before leaving it unattended.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi and a reliable power source, with a network connection capable of sustaining your chosen stream bitrate.
- A video input, such as a compatible Pi camera. Other capture devices and network cameras require their own compatible capture path.
- An audio source if your stream needs sound, plus software configured to capture and encode the video and audio.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube may require up to 24 hours to enable live streaming for the first time; check the channel’s Live Control Room before planning a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
This is a camera-to-YouTube workflow: the Pi encodes a live input. It is not a way to make an uploaded recording play continuously as a live stream.
Choose the Raspberry Pi for your workload
| Board | H.264 encoding path | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 and earlier | Dedicated H.264 encoding hardware; the Picamera2 manual documents this hardware path up to 1080p30. | Hardware encoding can suit a camera stream at that documented ceiling. Confirm the exact camera, frame rate, audio, and software configuration you plan to use. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Software encoding through FFmpeg libraries. | Raspberry Pi’s manual describes performance as similar or better and image quality as better, but that is not a guarantee for every resolution, frame rate, overlay, or audio setup. Measure CPU headroom on your own workload. |
These distinctions are documented by Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual and its processor documentation. Neither establishes a universal winner for every continuous stream. A Pi 4 Model B is one option; check the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B product information for its specifications.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream, then review its visibility and scheduling settings. Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. They are separate values: the URL is the destination, while the key identifies the stream to YouTube. YouTube says stream keys are like the stream’s password and address; treat the key as a secret. Do not put it in public code, screenshots, or logs. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Use the current RTMPS destination where your encoder supports it rather than assuming a URL saved previously is still correct. YouTube explains encrypted streaming at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Set up the Pi’s video and audio input
For a Raspberry Pi camera, Picamera2 is Raspberry Pi’s camera library and supports H.264 encoding. Install and configure the camera stack appropriate to your Pi OS release, then confirm that the camera produces the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. The Picamera2 manual covers its camera and encoder interfaces.

For USB capture devices, HDMI capture, or a network camera, select software that can actually see that input on your board and operating system. Capture support, available pixel formats, drivers, and audio routing vary; do not assume a device works just because it connects physically. Test video and audio together, including any microphone or line input, before configuring an unattended run.
Configure encoder output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s published guidance as a starting point, then choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. The current recommendations and resolution-specific bitrate guidance are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Resolution and frame rate: match the camera input and the picture quality you need. Do not configure an output mode the input or Pi cannot reliably produce.
- Video bitrate: select a value from YouTube’s current recommendations for your resolution and frame rate. A higher bitrate uses more upload capacity and is not automatically better if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Keyframes: set the interval to 2 seconds where configurable; keep it at or below 4 seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3 and verify that the selected source is present and at a suitable level in the YouTube preview.
- Transport: use RTMPS when supported by the encoder.
If you send a primary and backup stream, YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond their combined bitrates. Even without a backup feed, leave practical capacity for network variation rather than sizing the connection exactly to the encoder’s nominal bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start the encoder from the Pi and check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the signal.
- Wait for the preview. Check framing, focus, exposure, motion, audio presence, and synchronization; use headphones or a separate playback device to catch problems that are hard to hear at the source.
- Run a test at the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, input, and audio arrangement for long enough to observe CPU load, dropped frames, network stability, and heat under the actual workload.
- Confirm the stream’s visibility and whether you intend a scheduled broadcast or an ongoing live session before making it public.
- Check the live output again after any change to the camera, encoder settings, network, or software.
YouTube recommends testing and checking audio and video during a stream; its guidance supports operational checks, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Keep the process running and plan for recovery
On Linux, a service manager configured to restart an encoder process after failure can help bring that process back. It does not by itself guarantee that the encoder will reconnect correctly to YouTube, restore a failed network, recover a camera, or prevent power or thermal problems. Test restart behavior deliberately and confirm in Live Control Room that the stream returns after a process interruption.
For an unattended installation, also watch for camera disconnects, overheating, storage or log growth, power interruptions, and router or ISP outages. Arrange a way to inspect the Pi and YouTube preview remotely if practical. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one longer continuous session will be preserved as a complete archive. If a complete recording matters, use shorter sessions or make a separate recording plan. See YouTube’s encoder stream instructions.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the channel can livestream, the current stream URL and key are paired correctly, the encoder is running, and the network permits the selected RTMPS connection. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio.
- The preview appears but video stutters or drops frames: reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; check CPU load, capture performance, and upload stability. On a Pi 5, software encoding demand is especially workload-dependent.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: verify the chosen audio input, encoder audio codec, sample path, and synchronization in the preview; retest the full camera-and-audio combination.
- The process restarts but the broadcast does not resume: distinguish a local encoder restart from a successful YouTube reconnection. Check the encoder’s connection state and Live Control Room rather than assuming the restart policy restored the live stream.
- The stream ends or its archive is incomplete: check session length. YouTube’s stated automatic archive note applies to streams under 12 hours; longer continuous operation is not an archival guarantee.
