How to Run a Continuous YouTube Stream on a Raspberry Pi Without Re-encoding

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can send an already-encoded, YouTube-compatible video feed from a Raspberry Pi using FFmpeg stream copy, which passes encoded packets through without decoding or re-encoding the video. It only works when the input codecs, timestamps, audio, and container are compatible with YouTube’s ingestion requirements. The command below is a starting template, not a guaranteed recipe for every file or RTSP camera.

What “without re-encoding” means

In FFmpeg, -c copy selects stream copy: FFmpeg copies packets without decoding or encoding them. The FFmpeg documentation describes this as copying an input elementary stream’s packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. It is not a quality setting, and it cannot resize video, add overlays, or change frame rate.

The Raspberry Pi is acting as a transport and muxing host in this setup. In a successful stream-copy path, the Pi is not doing video re-encoding, regardless of whether the input was encoded on the Pi or elsewhere. Stream copy avoids extra video-encoding work and an additional lossy encode, but it does not make an incompatible source acceptable to YouTube.

Check whether your source can be copied

Before configuring a long-running broadcast, confirm that the feed is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts and that its stream parameters, audio, timestamps, and container can be sent in the required output format. YouTube’s current encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, HEVC, or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Stream copy is a good candidate: the source is already encoded appropriately, its streams and timestamps are usable, and no picture or format changes are needed.
  • Stream copy may fail: the source codec, audio, timestamps, or muxing requirements do not match the output YouTube accepts. A camera’s RTSP URL alone does not establish compatibility.
  • Re-encoding is needed for changes: resizing, overlays, frame-rate changes, codec conversion, or filters require decoding and generally encoding the video again. That increases compute demand and changes the setup from pure stream copy.

Container constraints can also prevent stream copy: the target muxer may need information the input does not provide. FFmpeg filters operate on decoded frames, so they cannot be applied to copied packets. If YouTube rejects the stream or flags unsupported settings, check the source and muxing path before deciding whether to re-encode.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube provides the stream URL and stream key for the encoder workflow; follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Use the RTMPS ingest address when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as the “password and address” for a stream. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public log. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed; see Manage live stream settings.

Adjust stream selection when needed

-map 0 asks FFmpeg to include all input streams. If the source contains extra audio tracks, subtitles, data streams, or other tracks unsuitable for the output, explicitly map only the wanted video and audio streams instead. Confirm the input’s stream layout before choosing map indexes; they depend on the source.

Do not mistake stream copy for a YouTube settings fix

-c copy does not change bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, or codec. The copied source must already meet the relevant requirements. YouTube’s published H.264 guidance is:

These are YouTube’s published configuration recommendations, not guarantees of acceptance or playback quality. Check its current encoder settings for other resolutions and formats. YouTube also transcodes incoming streams to create playback formats for different devices and networks; that downstream processing is separate from whether the Pi re-encodes its outgoing source.

Account for the Raspberry Pi model

Do not assume every Raspberry Pi has the same video-encoding hardware. Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual says Pi 4 and earlier devices have dedicated H.264 and MJPEG encoding hardware. Current Raspberry Pi camera-software documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Those distinctions matter when capturing or encoding video on the Pi, but not when a compatible, already-encoded feed is successfully passed through with stream copy. See the Picamera2 manual and Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Test the stream before relying on it

Use YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health messages to check the actual source and connection before treating the stream as operational. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring audio and video quality; see YouTube live streaming tips.

  1. Start with the intended source and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room.
  2. Check that both video and audio are present and that YouTube reports no unresolved stream-health problem.
  3. Measure the Pi’s actual available upload capacity under the conditions in which it will run. Leave margin above the outgoing bitrate rather than sizing the connection exactly to the stream.
  4. Observe what happens after a controlled network interruption or FFmpeg process stop, then confirm whether the source and encoder recover as intended. This is a proposed check, not a guarantee that a particular Pi setup will recover automatically.

Plan for continuity, not just a successful start

A process that starts successfully is not, by itself, a verified 24/7 system. Continuous operation depends on the source, network, process, storage, and power all remaining available, and on someone or something detecting problems. The official guidance cited here does not establish a particular systemd service, watchdog, UPS arrangement, SD-card endurance result, thermal profile, or Pi configuration that will run indefinitely.

Also distinguish a long-running local process from one uninterrupted YouTube event and from a sequence of archived sessions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the cited guidance does not establish an equivalent archive outcome for streams exceeding 12 hours. If archiving matters, check the current YouTube rules and plan the event length accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube reports an unsupported stream: inspect the actual video and audio codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, timestamps, and output muxing. Stream copy cannot convert an incompatible codec or repair settings that need changing.
  • Video works but audio is missing or rejected: check which audio stream is present and whether it is being mapped. If the audio format is incompatible, stream copy cannot convert it; audio conversion is a separate encoding step.
  • FFmpeg exits with a muxing or timestamp error: check whether the input streams and timestamps can be represented in the selected output container. The right remedy depends on the source; do not assume that changing the video encoder alone will fix a muxing problem.
  • The preview stalls or stream health degrades: compare the configured outgoing bitrate with real upload capacity and investigate network interruptions. A connection with no headroom may fail when conditions vary.
  • The stream stops after a source or process interruption: determine whether the input is still available and whether FFmpeg is still running, then restore the missing source or process. A successful initial test does not establish automatic recovery for a specific setup.
  • You need overlays, scaling, or a different frame rate: those operations require decoded frames, so a pure -c copy pipeline is no longer sufficient. Re-encoding may be necessary.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded, pre-recorded video rather than a Pi-hosted live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video to YouTube, not a live camera input. Start a free StreamNeo day.
