You can run a continuous YouTube stream from an old laptop with OBS, but only while the laptop stays powered, awake, connected and able to encode the video. For prerecorded, low-motion content, start with a simple OBS scene and conservative settings, then test them at the actual streaming location. There is no universal minimum laptop specification or setting that guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Before you set up OBS: decide whether the laptop is suitable
A local setup is most practical when the laptop can remain on safely, the power supply is dependable, and the internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s encoder recommendations describe delivery settings; they do not certify an older computer’s encoding capacity or guarantee that an Indian internet connection will hold steady.
- Try the laptop first if it stays cool enough, does not sleep unexpectedly, and can sustain a representative test without OBS overload or connection problems.
- Consider a cloud option for prerecorded video if the laptop overheats, loses power, cannot stay connected, or is otherwise the weak link. A cloud service shifts the streaming encoder away from your home computer, but requires uploading source video and checking the service’s terms, price and availability.
OBS cautions that a computer meeting its system requirements is not necessarily capable of streaming adequately. Its CPU needs depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. The OBS requirements page is dated 2021, so check its current documentation for supported operating systems and hardware rather than treating old compatibility details as a performance guarantee: OBS Studio system requirements.
Enable YouTube live streaming and create a broadcast
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete it well before your planned broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and locate its server URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a video, description or public chat.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the server and stream key provided for the broadcast. If OBS offers a direct account connection, follow the displayed workflow; do not expose the key.
- Start a test broadcast from OBS. Confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the encoder signal before making the stream public.

Build a low-load OBS scene
Keep sources and effects simple
Start with one static image or a simple video source and only the audio you need. Avoid adding animated overlays, multiple browser sources, filters, transitions or other effects until the basic stream has passed a sustained test. This is practical load reduction, not an official OBS hardware benchmark.
Set output resolution and frame rate conservatively
For an older laptop, begin with 480p or 720p at 30 frames per second rather than assuming the machine can handle high resolution or frame rates. Lower resolution can reduce network demand, while simpler scenes can reduce encoding work. Neither change fixes a laptop that cannot encode reliably; observe OBS during a representative test.

Choose a video bitrate for the connection
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Its listed minimums are 0.4 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively. These figures are encoder guidance, not a guarantee of quality or stability.

In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then configure the streaming encoder and video bitrate. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to test. OBS encoder labels and available choices vary by hardware and software version; select an encoder the laptop supports and monitor its load rather than assuming a particular hardware encoder exists.

For other resolutions or frame rates, use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions rather than extrapolating the two 30-fps examples above. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds if your encoder exposes that option, in line with YouTube’s published encoder guidance.
Check upload capacity at the streaming location
Measure sustained upload speed where the laptop will stream; download speed alone does not tell you whether the broadcast can be sent. YouTube recommends testing the connection and choosing a quality that can be delivered reliably. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate in that troubleshooting context. Treat that as a rule of thumb—not a guaranteed safe rate or an India-wide target—and leave headroom for fluctuations and other devices using the connection.

- If the connection cannot reliably support the target bitrate, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again.
- If Wi-Fi fluctuates, try a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A Cat 6 cable is an option only if both the laptop and router have compatible ports; Ethernet will not fix an ISP outage or insufficient upload capacity.
- Check your internet plan’s data policy. At a constant video bitrate alone, 4 Mbps transfers about 43.2 decimal GB per day, and 8 Mbps about 86.4 decimal GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates before audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions and differences in billing units—not YouTube-published usage figures or India-specific data prices.

- Use the content you expect to stream. Test with similar motion and audio. A still image alone may not reveal the load caused by more demanding video or scenes.
- Start OBS and check the incoming signal in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s stream-health status while the test runs.
- Watch OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. Rising dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If that happens, reduce the bitrate or output resolution, check competing network use, and test again.
- Watch for local performance problems. If OBS reports encoding lag or the laptop becomes unresponsive, simplify the scene or reduce the output demands. A network adjustment will not cure an overloaded encoder.
- Test for long enough to expose likely failures. A brief successful start does not establish that a laptop can run continuously. Pay attention to heat, sleep settings, power interruptions, router stability and ISP drops during the test.
YouTube says to test before starting a live stream and monitor stream health. Its encoder guidance covers stream settings; OBS provides the connection indicators described in its troubleshooting page.

Keep the laptop available—and set realistic archive expectations
A local OBS stream depends on the laptop, encoder, power and network remaining available. Set the computer not to sleep during the broadcast, connect its charger, and check that ventilation is not blocked. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions but cannot prevent an outage, hardware failure or ISP problem. Do not describe a laptop-based stream as guaranteed or truly indefinite.
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived. If you need a recording, plan a separate recording workflow or shorter scheduled segments and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive.

Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies—especially if you plan to loop material or apply for monetization. A stream being technically continuous does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists cloud services that describe continuous streaming of prerecorded videos, but a listing does not establish a provider’s current price, availability in India or commercial relationship with YouTube. Check each provider’s terms directly before relying on it.
