The VPS must have enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen bitrate and enough CPU if FFmpeg is transcoding. This guide covers a looping file; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service, YouTube eligibility, or indefinite archiving.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and a stream created in YouTube Live Control Room. Account eligibility and access can vary; confirm your channel can go live before buying or configuring a VPS.
- An Indian-region VPS whose provider permits continuous streaming. Check its included monthly traffic, sustained outbound throughput, and speed or fees after any transfer cap.
- A prepared media file stored on the VPS, plus enough storage for it and any local backup.
- FFmpeg built with the required input, video/audio codecs, FLV muxer, and TLS support for the RTMPS endpoint.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the server address and stream key shown for your stream in Live Control Room; do not build an endpoint from an old tutorial. RTMPS uses TLS on port 443, and the connection needs the correct server hostname for SNI. See YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose the VPS around the actual workload
There is no universally adequate CPU or RAM size: copying an already encoded stream uses a different amount of compute than encoding video or applying filters. Before committing, test at the intended resolution and settings, then observe CPU use and YouTube’s stream-health feedback. A Mumbai VPS provider documents plan-dependent monthly traffic and speed reduction after the allowance is used; check the current terms for the specific India-region plan you are considering: Vultr pricing.
Estimate monthly transfer
As a decimal-unit payload estimate, continuous video at 3 Mbps uses about 972 GB over a 30-day month; at 4 Mbps it uses about 1.30 TB. These are bitrate-times-time calculations, not provider quotes or guarantees. Actual usage can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, and other traffic. Compare the estimate with the plan’s India-region allowance and post-cap behavior.

Evaluate the plan on India-region availability, sustained outbound throughput, monthly transfer and post-cap speed, CPU performance for your encode mode, storage and media-read reliability, and terms that permit continuous streaming. An advertised port speed or the word “unmetered” alone does not establish suitability.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings
For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select settings for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a bitrate from a different format. The guidance also calls for constant bitrate (CBR). In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its RTMPS server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it functions like a password and should not appear in public scripts, screenshots, shell history, or readable logs.
Prepare and start the FFmpeg loop
For a file input, -re reads media at playback rate, while -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested command or universal optimum. Replace the path and endpoint placeholders with your own values; never paste a real key into a public example.

That bitrate is an example, not a YouTube recommendation; choose a target appropriate to the resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s settings. Leave network headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and variation.
Copy or transcode?
If the file’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, keyframe spacing, and audio already meet YouTube’s ingest requirements, stream copy can avoid CPU-intensive transcoding. Do not assume compatibility from the file extension or appearance alone: inspect the media, test it, and check YouTube’s health feedback. If you transcode, monitor CPU use and stream health before leaving the process unattended. YouTube documents health issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio in its LiveStreams resource.

Keep FFmpeg running and monitor both ends
Use a service manager such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Configure a restart delay or backoff so a persistent configuration error does not create a rapid failure loop, and send logs to journald or rotated files. A restarted process may require YouTube to reacquire the feed; process supervision is not seamless-stream recovery and cannot prevent a network or ingest interruption.
- On the VPS, check that the FFmpeg process remains active and review its logs for input, encoding, and connection errors.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and any configuration messages. The LiveStreams API also exposes active, inactive, or error state, health status, and configuration issues.
- Before leaving the stream unattended, test with representative motion and audio and verify that YouTube receives both correctly.
- Keep a local copy of the source media and service configuration, and plan how to restore the VPS. Backups do not replace monitoring.
YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast arrangement in which a second broadcast can share the stream, and the 24/7 broadcast continues when the second broadcast completes. Common failures and fixes

Copyright, channel rules, and continuous broadcasts
A technically valid feed does not establish that you have rights to broadcast the video or that your channel meets YouTube’s live-stream rules. Confirm that you control or have permission for the video, music, and other material, and that the channel’s live-stream access is in good standing. Continuous playback does not bypass copyright or platform policies. YouTube’s API documentation for 24/7 broadcasts describes broadcast resources, not account eligibility or a guarantee that every stream will remain available.
