Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can run a game without DirectX 12 only if that game supports another graphics renderer, such as DirectX 11 or Vulkan. Check for a renderer choice in the game’s launch dialog or official support instructions; use a launch option only when the publisher documents it for that specific game. There is no universal command that switches every game to DX11.
First, check whether the game supports another renderer
The answer depends on the game’s name and version, not just on Windows or your graphics card. Look in the game’s official PC requirements and support page, then check its startup dialog or graphics settings for a DirectX 11, Vulkan, or other renderer choice. If the game requires DX12 and provides no alternative, a launch setting cannot add support for another API.
Some games show a launch popup with separate renderer choices. Deep Rock Galactic’s FAQ says its popup includes DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 options and remembers the last selection; launching through a desktop shortcut uses the remembered or default choice. See the Deep Rock Galactic FAQ.
Use a documented launch option if the game has no selector
On Steam, right-click the game in your Library and choose Properties, then General. Enter a launch option in the Launch Options field only if the game’s publisher or developer documents it. Steam notes that launch options can override internal settings, but its example -dxlevel options apply to GoldSrc and Source games—not most third-party games. See Steam’s launch options guidance.

For example, Coffee Stain Studios documented d3d11 or DX11 for forcing DirectX 11 in a Satisfactory troubleshooting announcement dated December 2, 2021. That same announcement listed d3d12, DX12, and vulkan as renderer options for that game and build. Those strings are not general-purpose DirectX switches; consult the current instructions for your own title. See the Satisfactory announcement.

Alternative renderers can differ in features as well as compatibility. Square Enix’s support article for Life is Strange: True Colors recommends DX11 as its default and says DX12 enables ray tracing; it also says the game’s two executables share saves. Those details apply to that title, not every game. Check the publisher’s documentation for feature differences, save compatibility, and whether the alternate renderer is supported. See Square Enix support for Life is Strange: True Colors.

Compare startup reliability and performance on your own system, and check whether the chosen option persists when you relaunch from Steam or a shortcut. The sources above do not establish that DX11 is universally faster or more stable than DX12.
If you play on Linux
Proton and renderer support are separate issues. Valve describes Proton as a Steam client tool that lets Windows-exclusive games run on Linux, using Wine. Its purpose does not establish that a game requiring DX12 can instead run with DX11. Valve recommends that most users use the Proton version provided in the Steam client. See the Proton README.

If the game still will not start
- Identify the exact title and version. Find the official requirements and support instructions for the edition you own.
- Try the game’s built-in renderer selector. Choose an alternate option only if the game offers one.
- Follow the publisher’s troubleshooting steps. If its instructions say to verify game files before changing renderers, do that first.
- Use only a documented launch argument. Enter it in the storefront’s launch options only if it is intended for your game and version.
- Check the hardware requirement if no fallback exists. If the title requires DX12 and offers no supported alternative, you may be facing a game or hardware compatibility limit rather than a missing setting.
To give exact steps, the key details are the game name, its version, your operating system and storefront, and your graphics hardware.
