For dependable continuous operation, configure a modest scene and output the computer can handle, prevent sleep, test the actual viewing page, and plan for YouTube’s archive limit: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a single longer broadcast is not a reliable way to preserve a complete replay.
Choose the signal path before setting up OBS
First decide what the stream should show: a live sanctuary camera, recorded sermon material, presentation slides, or a mix. Trace each source to the PC and identify where the sound will come from. A common church setup sends a camera and soundboard feed into the computer, where OBS combines them with slides and sends the result to YouTube.
- USB webcam: Connect it directly to the PC; it does not require an HDMI capture card.
- HDMI camera or switcher: Check whether the PC already has a compatible capture input. If not, you may need a USB HDMI capture card. Verify the camera’s output, card compatibility, driver support and operating-system support before buying one.
- Slides: Presentation software such as Proclaim can compose slides with pastor video. Proclaim’s setup guide describes a camera or webcam, microphone, optional video switcher and OBS as parts of a possible church workflow (Proclaim’s live-stream setup guide; Logos’ YouTube streaming example).
- Audio: Use a suitable soundboard output when available, or a connected microphone. A computer’s built-in microphone can work for a basic home setup, but check the result carefully.
A USB webcam can be simpler than routing an HDMI camera through capture hardware. Do not buy a capture card unless your chosen HDMI source needs one to enter the PC.
Check and prepare the spare PC
Install the current OBS release from the official OBS Project site, then check OBS’s system requirements. Meeting the listed baseline requirements does not prove that a particular machine can encode your intended stream reliably: workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).

- Open OBS and run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers the available hardware and network conditions; treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Build a simple scene and begin with a resolution and frame rate the PC can encode smoothly. Avoid adding elaborate scenes or effects until the basic feed is stable.
- Use the spare PC as a dedicated encoder during the broadcast. Close unnecessary applications, keep the machine ventilated, connect reliable power and network, and disable sleep or automatic shutdown for the operating period. These are practical precautions, not assurances of 24/7 reliability.
Do not assume that an unspecified older PC can run continuously. Observe its encoding performance and temperature during testing, and reduce the workload if it struggles.
Build the scene and verify sermon audio
In OBS, create a scene with the camera or capture-card source and, if needed, a window or display showing the slides. Add a title or static graphic only if it helps viewers follow the service. Select the intended audio devices explicitly; OBS’s quick-start guide recommends checking its mixer meters and choosing devices manually if the defaults are wrong (OBS Quick Start Guide).

- Speak or play the soundboard feed and watch the mixer meters move. Confirm that the intended source is active.
- Listen to a test recording or private/unlisted stream on another device. Check that speech is clear, consistent and not distorted by clipping.
- Make sure you are not unintentionally capturing desktop audio, an open microphone, or unrelated room sound.
- Check camera framing, slide readability and transitions at the size viewers will actually see.
For a sermon broadcast, intelligible, consistent speech is usually more important than multiple scenes or visual effects.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using YouTube’s current workflow. If the channel has never streamed live before, first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not display it in a public screen capture or share it with people who do not need access.
- Use the RTMPS URL when the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP and supplies the relevant URL through Live Control Room (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
- Set OBS’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate to suit both the PC’s encoding capacity and the real upload connection. OBS explains that bitrate must fit available upload speed and platform limits; 60 fps can demand more from the encoder than 30 fps (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
Proclaim’s church setup guide recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed, but that vendor recommendation is not a guarantee for every resolution, encoder setting or shared network. Leave room for other traffic and test at the actual location rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees a stable stream.

Test the whole broadcast before depending on it
OBS recommends a short test before a first live broadcast. Use a private or unlisted test when possible, and check the stream from a second device rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
- Confirm picture, camera framing, slide legibility, audio levels and scene changes.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload. If either appears, lower the resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or address network limitations before going live.
- Verify that the stream appears on the intended YouTube viewing page and that the audio remains synchronized.
- Keep the test running long enough to notice heat, sleep, power and network problems. A brief test can find setup mistakes, but cannot establish that a specific PC will remain reliable around the clock.
Plan how a “nonstop” stream ends and gets archived
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one broadcast longer than 12 hours to create a complete replay. Decide whether the priority is an always-available viewing feed, replayable individual sermons, or both, then plan when broadcasts will end or be segmented accordingly.

Before launch, check the channel’s current Live Control Room behavior for reconnecting, broadcast auto-stop and archive boundaries. The available official guidance does not provide a complete operating procedure for a 24/7 sermon channel, so confirm those details in the channel itself rather than assuming that a long-running encoder will preserve every segment.

- OBS has no picture: Confirm the correct camera or capture-card source is selected and active. For HDMI, check that the camera is outputting a compatible signal and that the capture device is recognized.
- Viewers cannot hear the sermon: Check the selected audio device and mixer meters, then listen from a second device. Confirm that the mixer feed reaches the PC and is not muted or clipping.
- Stream stutters or drops frames: Distinguish encoding overload from network trouble in OBS’s status indicators. Simplify the scene or lower output demands if the encoder is overloaded; check the upload connection and competing network use if frames are being dropped.
- The PC stops streaming after hours: Check sleep, power-management and shutdown settings, ventilation, power stability and network continuity. A test should be long enough to expose some of these risks, but no generic setup can certify a particular PC for nonstop use.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, and allow for the initial enablement period if this is the first broadcast.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Review the broadcast duration and archive boundary in YouTube. A stream over 12 hours should not be treated as a dependable single archived video.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before scheduling a service, make sure the church has permission for every song, recording, video clip and other material included in the stream and any replay. A license or permission for an in-person service does not automatically establish that the same material may be livestreamed or archived. Review the channel’s current YouTube policies and the terms of any applicable music or media licenses; this setup guide does not determine whether a particular church’s content is cleared.
