You can send a prerecorded podcast or prepared audio-led show to YouTube Live from an Ubuntu VPS using FFmpeg: create a YouTube Live event, copy its RTMPS ingest URL and stream key, configure FFmpeg to send the media, then check the preview and click Go live. A VPS can encode and transmit media stored or received on the server; it cannot capture a host’s microphone remotely. A genuinely live host or guest needs a separate, tested audio/video contribution path to the VPS.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming available. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check access in YouTube Studio before scheduling; eligibility rules and the channel’s status can affect whether you can go live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An Ubuntu VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen stream, plus enough CPU capacity if FFmpeg must encode or transcode in real time.
  • A media source: for example, a finished podcast video file. For live presenters, arrange a separate route that sends their audio/video to the VPS; the appropriate contribution protocol and setup depend on the studio and were not established as a universal configuration.
  • An FFmpeg build that supports the codecs you need and RTMPS. Ubuntu images and FFmpeg builds vary, so check the installed build rather than assuming a particular protocol or encoder is present.
  • A YouTube Live event, its exact server URL and stream key, and a way to monitor the Live Control Room preview and stream health.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL shown for your event when available. YouTube’s encoder setup and stream settings.

Set up the YouTube event and protect your stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a new event or choose the existing event you intend to use. Confirm the channel has live access before building the rest of the workflow.
  2. In Live Control Room, find the event’s stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. The key lets YouTube accept the encoder feed. Use the exact values shown for that event; do not substitute a guessed ingest address.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a public script repository, screenshots, terminal logs, or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
  4. For an initial test, use an unlisted event if that option is available for your channel and event. Check what is selected in Studio before starting so a test does not accidentally appear publicly.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the current behavior and archive status in Studio rather than relying on that archive as your only recording. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Prepare the Ubuntu VPS and choose the media input

For a finished podcast file

Upload or otherwise stage the finished video on the VPS and confirm its filename and path. FFmpeg can read a media file, encode or process it, and send an output stream to YouTube. The example below assumes the file is named podcast.mp4 in the command’s working directory.

For a genuinely live host or guest

The microphone and camera remain at the host’s location; a remote VPS cannot capture them directly. You need a separate contribution path that carries the studio feed to the VPS, then configure FFmpeg to ingest that source. Choose and test the topology, protocol, latency, and recovery behavior for the actual studio setup. A USB microphone, if used, connects to the host’s studio recording setup—not to the remote VPS.

Check FFmpeg capabilities and VPS capacity

Inspect the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, and confirm that the required input, H.264/AAC encoders, and RTMPS output protocol are available. Build options differ across Ubuntu releases and VPS images. Also check the provider’s sustained outbound capacity and data-transfer or egress limits. If transcoding, verify CPU headroom; if stream-copying, verify that the source codecs and parameters are compatible with YouTube’s requirements.

There is no established India VPS provider or route that can be recommended from the available evidence. Choose a location based on both the host-to-VPS contribution route and VPS-to-YouTube ingest route, and test those routes from the real host and server before relying on them for a broadcast.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings

YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists the following recommended and minimum video bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of what a particular India VPS or network can sustain. Leave capacity for network variation and match the settings to measured, stable upload throughput. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate Other relevant guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum Use a two-second keyframe interval where possible.
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum Use a two-second keyframe interval where possible.
Stereo audio 128 Kbps recommended for AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz sample rate recommended for stereo.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For a podcast with a simple static visual, 720p30 can be a practical starting point when bandwidth is constrained; use 1080p30 when the image benefits from it and the VPS connection can sustain the higher rate. These figures are platform guidance, not guarantees that a particular server or route will work.

ffmpeg -re -i podcast.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'

Replace the output URL with the exact RTMPS server URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not paste a real key into a public article, ticket, or shared terminal history. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second keyframe interval. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP accordingly.

The example’s 2.5 Mbps video bitrate is illustrative, not a YouTube recommendation for every resolution. Choose a target based on the output resolution, YouTube’s current settings table, and the VPS’s sustained capacity. If the input already has compatible codecs and parameters, stream-copy may lower CPU demand, but confirm compatibility and inspect the Live Control Room preview before relying on it. This command is an example, not a tested configuration for every input file, Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, or VPS.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Set up the encoder well before the event. YouTube suggests configuring it at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  2. Start FFmpeg and watch Live Control Room for the incoming signal and preview. Do not click Go live until the preview is present and the audio and video look correct.
  3. Listen for clear speech and check that the visual is not frozen or unintentionally blank. For a prerecorded show, inspect representative motion and transitions as well as the opening frame.
  4. Check stream health during the broadcast and confirm the public watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
  5. When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop the FFmpeg process. If you are recording a separate local or server-side archive, verify that file independently.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm that FFmpeg is still running, the output URL is the exact event’s RTMPS ingest URL, the stream key is current, and the installed build supports RTMPS. Check server connectivity and outbound restrictions.
  • The key is rejected: Recopy the key from the selected event and check that it has not been reset or replaced. If it was exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
  • The preview buffers or stream health degrades: Check sustained outbound throughput and VPS network stability. Reduce resolution or bitrate to a level the connection can maintain, and leave headroom rather than sizing the stream to a best-case speed test.
  • FFmpeg reports an encoder or protocol error: Check the FFmpeg build and available encoders/protocols. The installed binary may not include the needed H.264 encoder or RTMPS support.
  • Video is choppy or the VPS is overloaded: Real-time transcoding can consume substantial CPU. Check server utilization, simplify the encode settings, or use compatible stream-copy where the source format permits it.
  • There is no host audio at the VPS: The server cannot access a microphone at the host’s location on its own. Verify the separate contribution feed into the VPS before investigating YouTube ingest settings.
  • The YouTube preview is silent or distorted: Check the input audio stream, chosen audio codec, channel layout, sample rate, and level; then verify the preview before going live.
