You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Windows PC without OBS by using FFmpeg as the encoder. First create or schedule a YouTube Live event, then give FFmpeg the event’s stream URL and key and have it send the file in real time. The PC, FFmpeg process, video file and internet connection must remain available while the stream runs.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the planned stream. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide has the current account and setup instructions.
- FFmpeg installed on Windows and accessible from Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- The prerecorded video file stored on the PC, plus a stable upload connection capable of sending the stream continuously.
- A YouTube Live event’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send video to that event.
This is an encoder-fed live event, not simply uploading the finished video. Scheduling the event in YouTube Studio does not play a file from your PC by itself: an encoder must send the media when it is time to stream.
Create the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live. If you are preparing ahead, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. YouTube’s interface may change, so follow the labels shown in your account and its official setup instructions.
- Set the event’s title, visibility and other details. Choose private or unlisted for a rehearsal if you want to check the whole path before broadcasting publicly.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the ingest server URL and stream key. Use the values assigned to this event, rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial.
- For a scheduled event, keep its Live Control Room open so you can watch for the encoder preview and use the dashboard controls when ready.
YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the stream key like a password, and do not paste it into a public command, screenshot or chat.
Send the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -re for reading an input file at its native frame rate, which is useful when simulating a live source. Its protocol documentation gives a generic file-to-RTMP example. The command below shows the shape of that workflow, but it is not a tested, universal Windows recipe: confirm your FFmpeg build, file compatibility, audio track and the exact destination format supplied for your YouTube event before using it.

ffmpeg -re -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -f flv "rtmp://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"Replace the input path and destination with your own. The destination shown is only a schematic placeholder: use the server URL and key in the format required by the event and encoder. FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1, and shows the general pattern ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. - Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in Windows.
- Enter the command with the correct quoted file path and event destination. Quotation marks are important when a Windows path contains spaces.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection or input errors. If it connects, open the YouTube event’s Live Control Room and check that an encoder preview appears.
- For a scheduled event, use the dashboard’s current controls to start the live event after the preview is ready. For an immediate stream, follow the state shown in the dashboard as the encoder connects and the watch page becomes available.
- Keep the computer awake, FFmpeg running and network connection stable for the duration. Closing the terminal or shutting down the PC ends the local encoder feed.
The example deliberately does not force a resolution, bitrate, frame rate or codec. Those settings depend on the file, FFmpeg build and YouTube event requirements; the cited documentation does not establish one universal set for every Windows file and account. If the input is incompatible or the connection fails, diagnose the actual FFmpeg and YouTube messages rather than assuming a single setting will fix it.

RTMP, RTMPS and stream-key handling
YouTube provides the ingest information for the event. Use the exact protocol and URL it displays and make sure your encoder supports that protocol. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; its developer documentation also explains that endpoint, application path, port and server-name indication matter for integrations. Do not edit an ingest address from memory or change protocols unless the endpoint and encoder support it. See Google’s RTMPS documentation.
A stream key is sensitive even when the event is private or unlisted. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before broadcasting.

End the stream and check the archive
When the video finishes, stop FFmpeg’s output and end the event in YouTube Studio if the dashboard calls for it. YouTube’s cited help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not mean a local encoder will keep sending after the file ends; check the event state and recording after the stream.
Common problems and fixes

When a browser service or hardware makes more sense
