A vMix playlist can advance through and loop video and audio files, but that does not by itself make a YouTube broadcast restart after Windows updates. Set up and save the playlist, verify the separate YouTube encoder start settings, then test the entire reboot-and-recovery sequence on the computer and vMix version you will use. The available vMix documentation does not establish a universal Windows startup procedure that restores the production and reconnects the stream automatically.
Understand what has to recover
A working playlist stream depends on several separate states. After a reboot, vMix must open the intended production, the List input must be playing and advancing, vMix must connect to the intended YouTube stream, and the public watch page must show and play the expected content. A successful Windows login—or even seeing vMix open—does not prove that the broadcast is live.
- Production: the right saved vMix setup has opened.
- Playlist: the List input is advancing through items and looping as intended.
- Encoder and event: vMix is connected to the correct YouTube stream, and the stream is marked live as expected.
- Viewer experience: the public page displays the current video and has audible sound.
Configure and save the vMix playlist
Create the List input
In vMix, create a List input from the video and audio files you intend to play, or use an M3U playlist. The List input supports automatic advancement and looping. The vMix List guide says Auto Next is enabled by default, but confirm the setting in the actual production rather than relying on its default.
Check advancement and looping
- Confirm Auto Next is enabled so playback advances to the next item.
- Confirm Loop is enabled if the list should return to its beginning after the final item.
- Run the list and check that the expected files play in the expected order.
- Save the production after configuring it, then reopen it in a test to check that the intended setup is restored.
Do not mistake playlist automation for a clock schedule
vMix describes Playlist and List as options for basic or continuous playback, including a looping list. That is not the same as scheduling a stream to start at a particular time of day. The vMix Knowledge Base article “Does vMix support scheduling?”, last updated January 17, 2025, states: “vMix is primarily designed for live streaming single events and as such does not support time of day scheduling.”

Configure the YouTube stream separately
Playing media in vMix and broadcasting it to YouTube are separate operations. The documented vMix YouTube Live Stream Now flow is to create a stream or select an event, then press Start in vMix. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream setup and key for the specific stream you intend to use. Keep the stream key private.
YouTube encoder streams also have Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. Confirm their state on the particular Live Control Room stream. When those settings are enabled, the encoder can control starting and stopping the stream; do not assume that a vMix playlist starting means the YouTube event is live.

Test the full reboot workflow before relying on it
The exact Windows-specific mechanism for reopening vMix, restoring the intended production and reconnecting to YouTube after an update reboot is not established here. vMix’s startup-options documentation describes application options; it does not establish that a streaming session resumes automatically. Treat any startup task or login automation as machine-specific until you have verified it on the target computer.
- Record the setup being tested. Note the computer, Windows build, vMix version, saved production, and YouTube stream configuration. This makes the result useful if an update or configuration change alters behavior.
- Confirm the saved production. Verify that it contains the intended List input and that Auto Next and Loop are set correctly.
- Perform a controlled Windows restart. Use the same user session and network conditions expected after an update. Observe what actually opens and what still requires an operator action; do not assume that launching the application also resumes playback or the broadcast.
- Check the vMix state. Confirm the intended production is open, the List input is advancing, and vMix reports the expected stream state.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview and whether the event is live. If it is not live, use the documented vMix Start flow and check how the selected stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings apply.
- Check the public watch page. Confirm that it is accessible and shows the current playlist item with sound. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality and having 20% upload bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate.
Repeat the controlled test after changing a relevant Windows, vMix, saved-production, or YouTube stream setting. Record the result for that system; a successful test on one machine does not establish a universal restart recipe.

Troubleshoot by the state that failed
