How to Run a YouTube 24/7 Stream on a VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can keep a YouTube broadcast running while your own computer is off by hosting FFmpeg on a VPS and having it send a real-time media stream to YouTube Live over RTMPS. YouTube handles delivery to viewers; the VPS runs the encoder and media files. A VPS does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: you still need to test the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and plan how the encoder recovers from failures.

How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works

The VPS is an always-on host for Linux, your media files, FFmpeg, and a process supervisor. FFmpeg reads a file in real time and sends the encoded stream to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube—not the VPS—delivers the live broadcast to viewers. The official documentation describes the ingest and encoding workflow, but does not certify any VPS provider’s performance.

This guide uses a pre-recorded file as its example. A playlist or other input can require a different FFmpeg input setup; the essential pieces remain a working encoder, YouTube’s current ingest address and stream key, and a stable connection from the VPS.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Create or configure the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the broadcast and retrieve the current server or ingest URL and stream key. Use the values YouTube provides for that stream rather than copying an endpoint from a generic example. YouTube’s Live API documents primary and optional backup ingest addresses in its liveStreams resource.
  2. Use RTMPS for the ordinary starting point. YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical live content. The connection requires YouTube’s valid ingest endpoint and path, port 443, TLS, and the expected server hostname for SNI authentication. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a credential. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, source repository, or logs that others can read. Avoid exposing it in shell history; use a suitably protected configuration or secret-handling method for your server.

Do not assume every FFmpeg package supports every protocol. Before configuring RTMPS, confirm that the installed build can use it. The FFmpeg documentation describes RTMP-family protocols and notes that available support depends on the build; see its protocol documentation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Pick settings the VPS can encode continuously, then test them under sustained load. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary use. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations include these examples. They are encoder guidance—not guarantees that a particular VPS has enough CPU, network capacity, or sustained performance.

Video format YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Bitrate needs depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity. Allow headroom for network overhead, and test whether the chosen VPS can encode the material continuously. The cited guidance does not establish a universal CPU or RAM requirement for a resolution or codec.

RTMPS is the straightforward default for a typical low-latency stream. YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingest options, which support additional codecs but are segment-based and generally have higher latency. Consider those alternatives only if your codec, resolution, or workflow needs justify them; compare the protocol options in Google’s ingestion protocol comparison.

Start FFmpeg with a real-time file input

FFmpeg’s documented pattern for sending a file in real time is to use -re with an FLV output to an RTMP-family destination. Translate that pattern to YouTube’s current RTMPS address and path only after confirming your FFmpeg build supports the needed protocol. Keep placeholders in shared commands and never substitute a real stream key in material that may be exposed.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<YouTube RTMPS ingest URL and path>/<private stream key>"

This is an illustrative H.264 configuration, not a universal preset. It uses a 10 Mbps target, suitable as a starting bitrate for YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 recommendation; the appropriate keyframe size depends on frame rate when applying the two-second interval (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps). Adjust video and audio settings for your source, target format, and available encoding capacity. If you use a pre-encoded file and want to avoid re-encoding, confirm that its codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes match the stream you intend to send; an unsuitable file may need transcoding.

For a playlist, arrange the inputs and looping behavior deliberately rather than assuming a single-file command will automatically cycle through several videos. Test transitions, audio continuity, and what happens at the end of the final item before making the broadcast public.

Keep the encoder running after a reboot

A 24/7 setup needs more than a command left in a terminal. Use a Linux process supervisor such as systemd to start the encoder at boot and restart it after the process exits. That is an operational pattern, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee that viewers will never see an interruption. The YouTube and FFmpeg sources cited here do not provide an official systemd unit or guarantee uninterrupted operation.

  • Configure the service to start only after the media and configuration it needs are available.
  • Keep credentials out of the unit text and any logs or files accessible to unintended users.
  • Send output and errors to logs you can inspect, with a retention policy that will not fill the VPS disk.
  • Confirm the restart behavior after a deliberate process stop and after a server reboot.
  • Monitor the YouTube broadcast separately: a running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Test, monitor, and recover

Before relying on a public broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” During operation, check stream health and YouTube’s messages alongside local FFmpeg logs and process state.

YouTube’s Live API health information can report detected problems such as low bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. Its stream resource and health reporting are documented in the Live API reference. A process check alone will not reveal every ingest or configuration issue.

  • After a restart: verify that the encoder reconnects and that the intended YouTube event is still configured as expected.
  • After a dropped connection: check both local logs and YouTube’s messages; confirm the service restarts the process and that the ingest accepts the new connection.
  • For missing-stream alerts: monitor YouTube-side health or receipt of the broadcast, not merely whether the VPS process exists.
  • For long-running broadcasts: check disk space, logs, source-file availability, and sustained CPU and network use as part of routine operations.

These checks make failures easier to detect and diagnose; they do not guarantee uptime. The cited technical guidance also does not establish how YouTube handles archives for every exceptionally long broadcast.

Copyright and content eligibility still apply

Keeping an encoder online does not make the content eligible to stream or monetize. Confirm that you have the rights needed for every video and audio track, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for your channel and content. The technical ingest and encoder documentation cited above does not establish that every kind of continuous rebroadcast is permitted.

Estimate the VPS resources and operating cost

VPS requirements depend on whether FFmpeg copies compatible media or encodes it, the selected codec and resolution, and the amount of outbound traffic included in the hosting plan. Compare providers on sustained CPU capability, storage for your media, outbound bandwidth allowance, and recovery or support options. The published YouTube bitrate figures are not VPS sizing guarantees, and the sources cited here do not specify a provider, server size, hosting price, bandwidth allowance, or reliability level.

For perspective, a continuous stream at 10 Mbps sends roughly 108 GB of video data per day before protocol overhead (10 megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8). Actual transfer accounting and allowances depend on the provider. Calculate against your chosen bitrate and check the provider’s terms rather than treating this estimate as a plan specification.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain a VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
