To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, add it as a looping Media Source in OBS Studio, connect OBS to an encoder stream created in YouTube Studio, then check the preview and click Go live. The video plays from your Ubuntu computer, so that computer and its internet connection must remain available while the broadcast runs.
Before you start
- An Ubuntu computer with OBS Studio installed and the video file stored locally.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected stream quality.
- Permission to broadcast all video and audio in the loop.
YouTube’s published setup guidance describes the same encoder workflow for creators in India; it does not establish a special India-only setup requirement. Check your account’s current Live Control Room for its eligibility and stream options.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
First check your Ubuntu release. OBS’s current download page provides this PPA installation route for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer; if you use an older release, follow the OBS Linux installation article for that version rather than assuming these commands apply.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming, with Linux support. Its built-in Media Source is available on Linux and supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the video repeat in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select or create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source settings.
- Check the OBS preview. Confirm the picture fits the canvas and that the video’s audio is present at a sensible level.
Test the end-to-start transition before broadcasting. A loop can repeat successfully yet still have an abrupt visual or audio cut if that is how the file was edited. Keep OBS running and the video file available for the duration of the stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create an encoder stream, or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder livestreaming eligibility requirements include a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check stream health before making the broadcast public.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Starting the encoder alone does not necessarily publish the scheduled stream.
- To finish, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from OBS.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. For a long loop, use that time to check the video restarts cleanly and its picture and audio continue. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that condition covers a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.

Choose a stable stream quality and protocol
Upload capacity and stream health
Choose a quality your available upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom; the capacity available to your computer can fluctuate on a shared connection. Test the connection and monitor stream health in Live Control Room rather than relying only on a speed-test result.
RTMPS, latency, and HLS
For a typical H.264 prerecorded loop, use a YouTube-compatible RTMPS configuration unless you have a specific reason to choose otherwise. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data sent to its servers. Normal or low latency is usually less important for a prerecorded loop than it is for a live conversation; YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering.

HLS is an alternative when an encoder or codec requires it, but it has higher latency than RTMP and requires compatible HLS output. YouTube’s documented HLS configuration calls for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These are configuration requirements, not recommended OBS settings for every loop.
Copyright, archives, and monetization
Broadcast only video and audio you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to broadcast. Repeating a file does not grant rights, prevent a copyright claim, or guarantee that a channel can monetize it. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance says eligible monetized channels can enable live-stream ads, while other monetization features depend on channel access and settings.

Review the [copyright safety checklist](https://streamneo.com/tools/copyright-safety-checklist) before scheduling a loop, particularly if it contains music, game footage, or material created by someone else. Archive availability is also conditional: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No video in OBS preview | The Media Source points to the wrong file, the file is unavailable, or its format is unsupported. | Reopen the source properties, select the local file again, and confirm it is in a supported format such as MP4, MOV, MKV, or WebM. |
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open that source’s properties, enable Loop, and watch it reach the end before going live. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The encoder is not sending, or the stream URL or key in OBS is incorrect. | Confirm OBS is streaming and check the URL and key against the current encoder stream in Live Control Room. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The preview appears, but the scheduled stream is not public | The scheduled stream has not been manually started in Live Control Room. | After checking the preview, click Go live there. |
| Stream health is poor or playback buffers | The upload connection may not sustain the selected quality, or other users or devices may be consuming capacity. | Check stream health, reduce the encoder quality if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| The video repeats but audio is missing or cuts out | The source may have no usable audio, its audio level may be muted, or the loop point may cut abruptly. | Check OBS audio meters and monitoring, then inspect the file’s audio and end-to-start edit before broadcasting. |
