You can send a video from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by creating a YouTube event, copying that event’s RTMPS URL and stream key, making the media available on the server, and running FFmpeg with settings suited to the source and output profile. A headless VPS cannot see your laptop camera or capture card by itself: the source must be uploaded, downloaded, mounted, or otherwise accessible to the server.
The workflow below is for prerecorded media or another source the VPS can access. It does not recommend a particular VPS provider or instance size; performance and network route depend on the workload and host. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate table for India.
What you need before you start
- An enabled YouTube channel with live streaming available. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An event in YouTube Studio and its current stream URL and key.
- An Ubuntu VPS with the source media stored locally or available through a reliable remote or mounted path.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the encoder, audio codec, and output protocol you plan to use.
- Enough server compute to encode in real time, if re-encoding, and sustained outbound capacity for the combined audio and video bitrate.
A server in India is not automatically a better route to YouTube’s ingest servers. Choose a host based on verified region availability, transfer limits, sustained egress, compute options, and recovery facilities; the destination route should be checked from the actual VPS.
Create the YouTube event and get its stream credentials
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the values for that event rather than a URL or key copied from an old setup.
- If you want RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in the event settings. Do not assume the ordinary RTMP address initially shown is the secure destination.
- Keep the key private. It is a credential that can let another person broadcast to your event. Do not publish it, put it in a shared script, or expose it in screenshots or logs.
YouTube’s setup guidance directs creators to copy the URL and key from Live Control Room into their encoder. Its RTMPS help describes encrypted RTMP; port 443 may need to be specified, and the server hostname matters for TLS SNI authentication.

Prepare FFmpeg on Ubuntu
Install and verify the build
Install FFmpeg using the package source or build appropriate for your Ubuntu release and requirements. The available encoders and protocol support vary by build, so verify before relying on a particular configuration:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
Check the output for libx264 if you intend to use the sample H.264 command. Also confirm that the build supports AAC encoding and RTMPS output. A package called FFmpeg does not guarantee identical codec options on every Ubuntu release.

Make the media available and inspect it
Upload the file, download it to the VPS, or use a mounted or remote source that can keep pace without interruptions. A remote mount that stalls can starve the outgoing stream. Inspect the file’s video dimensions, frame rate, codec, audio streams, and duration before choosing whether to re-encode, scale, or map streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/input.mp4
A VPS does not automatically receive a local camera or capture-card feed. For a live camera source, you need a capture device or feed and a capture path the server can actually access; the file-loop command below is for prerecorded media.

Choose a YouTube bitrate and output profile
YouTube Help’s current encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart, and up to 60 fps. The H.264 bitrate recommendations below are YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a promise of viewer quality or an India-specific network requirement.
| Output profile | YouTube H.264 minimum | YouTube H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube Help as retrieved on 2026-10-04; the page does not display a publication date in the retrieved content. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest, but use a matching codec profile and bitrate guidance rather than applying H.264 values indiscriminately. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance is AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.

Match the profile to the source and server
- Choose 720p or 1080p and 30 or 60 fps based on the source, intended output, and available compute and network headroom. A 60 fps profile has a higher recommended bitrate at 1080p than 30 fps.
- For re-encoding to H.264 at 1080p30, use 14 Mbps as the recommended YouTube H.264 value. YouTube lists 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p30, so that figure should not be used as the H.264 recommendation.
- Use stream copy only when the existing codecs and stream characteristics are compatible with the intended YouTube ingest profile. Otherwise, re-encode; doing so takes CPU or hardware-encoder capacity.
- Do not assume that a particular vCPU/RAM size will work. Encoding speed depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, concurrency, and provider. Measure the actual workload and ensure the VPS’s outbound connection can sustain the selected audio-plus-video bitrate.
Loop a prerecorded video to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a 1080p30 H.264 output, this illustrative command loops a file, paces it at real time, uses CBR-style rate control, and sets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
Here, -re reads a file at its native rate, and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. The 14 Mbps video bitrate follows YouTube’s recommended H.264 value for 1080p30.

This is an example pattern, not a tested universal command. It assumes a compatible 1080p30 source and an FFmpeg build with the required encoders and RTMPS support. If the source needs scaling, cropping, stream mapping, timestamp adjustments, a different audio layout, or a different encoder, adapt the command and re-check the resulting output. At other resolutions or frame rates, change the bitrate and GOP settings to match the relevant profile.
Supply the URL and key securely
Set RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY from the current YouTube event rather than embedding a real key in a reusable or shared script. Avoid shell history, process inspection exposure where possible, logs, screenshots, and public repositories. If you use RTMPS and encounter a TLS or connection problem, verify the scheme, hostname, and whether the endpoint requires port 443; use the hostname provided by YouTube so TLS SNI can be authenticated.
Test the preview and monitor stream health
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, encoding speed, and bitrate behavior.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and confirm that the preview shows the expected picture and audio.
- Test with representative movement and sound, not only a static image or silent opening. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Review stream health messages before relying on the broadcast. YouTube diagnostics can flag bitrate that is too low or high, frame-rate mismatch, long GOP/keyframe intervals, missing audio or video, and stream starvation.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full.
Fix common connection and stream-health problems
YouTube shows no incoming data
- Confirm the FFmpeg process is still running and has not exited with an input or encoder error.
- Re-copy the stream URL and key from the active event; check for a stale key, missing characters, or accidental whitespace.
- Confirm the VPS can reach the endpoint and that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS output.
- Verify the source file or remote input is readable and is not stalled.
RTMPS reports a TLS, SSL, or timeout error
- Check that the destination uses the RTMPS scheme and the hostname copied from Live Control Room.
- Check whether port 443 needs to be specified for the endpoint.
- Use the YouTube server hostname, not an arbitrary IP address, because the hostname is used for TLS SNI authentication.
- Confirm that the VPS network or firewall permits outbound connections to the destination.
Stream health is poor or unstable
- Compare actual bitrate and frame rate with the output profile you selected.
- Check that keyframes are no more than four seconds apart and preferably every two seconds, as YouTube recommends.
- Look for missing audio/video or starvation warnings; check that the input has the expected streams and the server can read them continuously.
- If the encoder cannot maintain real-time speed, reduce the output workload, change the encoding approach, or use a host with measured capacity for that workload.
- If the VPS’s outbound route cannot sustain the selected combined bitrate, reduce the profile or choose a host/network that can.
DIY FFmpeg on a VPS or a managed cloud stream?
Running FFmpeg yourself provides direct control over the command, input handling, and server environment, but you manage the VPS, credentials, media availability, encoding capacity, network stability, and recovery. If you prefer not to keep a server process running yourself, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider for a prerecorded YouTube loop: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
Every slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. You can pay for a day, week, month, six months, or year and cancel any time; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Contact support for five or more slots.
StreamNeo monthly price: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. To start the free day, create a StreamNeo account.
