You can run an always-on YouTube gaming stream from Linux by sending a correctly configured OBS or other encoder feed to YouTube Live over RTMPS, supervising the encoder on the host, and monitoring YouTube’s broadcast status and stream health. These are separate parts of the job: a running Linux process does not by itself prove YouTube is presenting a live broadcast, and automatic restarts cannot guarantee uninterrupted viewing.
What “always-on” means for a Linux gaming stream
A continuous broadcast depends on several components working together: the game or video source, capture and encoding, the Linux host, the network connection, YouTube ingest, and the broadcast’s lifecycle settings. Plan to detect failures and recover from them rather than assume any one encoder or restart policy guarantees 24/7 uptime.
- Encoder: OBS provides a visual scene workflow suited to gameplay capture, overlays, and scene changes. A headless encoder may suit a generated or pre-rendered feed, but the platform guidance cited here does not validate a specific FFmpeg setup.
- Host: The machine must handle the game and encoding together, or receive gameplay from another device. Resolution and frame rate should reflect what the host can encode while the game is running.
- Network and ingest: The host needs a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Local process status does not show whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Broadcast lifecycle: YouTube’s encoder connection and the public broadcast are related but distinct states. The selected settings determine whether a scheduled broadcast starts and stops automatically or needs manual action.
The right arrangement depends on your Linux distribution, GPU, gameplay source, network, and desired output. There is no single hardware profile or service-manager setup established for every Linux gaming stream.
Prepare YouTube Live and OBS
- Confirm live streaming is available for your channel. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Account requirements and controls can change, so check the current instructions in your own account.
- Get the current ingest URL and stream key. In Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS URL and the key for the broadcast. YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to enter both in an encoder: YouTube Live encoder setup.
- Choose YouTube in OBS. Select the YouTube service or preset if it is available in your OBS version. If configuring the server manually, enter the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and the matching stream key; do not substitute a URL copied from an old setup.
- Protect the key. Treat it as a credential: do not include it in screenshots, public scripts, issue reports, or source control. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls and update the encoder configuration.
- Set the broadcast lifecycle deliberately. Check whether the scheduled stream’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior is enabled, and determine whether a manual action is needed when the encoder reconnects. OBS’s community guide describes these controls, but labels and behavior may change by version: OBS guide to setting up a YouTube live stream.
Choose encoder settings for the game and host
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the output resolution and frame rate you actually choose. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 among supported video codecs, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution, so there is no one correct bitrate for every gaming stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.

- Start with a sustainable output. If the game and encoder compete for resources, reduce output resolution or frame rate before assuming YouTube is at fault. The best setting is one the host can maintain while playing and that fits your available upload capacity.
- Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval. Configure a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Choose a supported codec your encoder and workflow can use. YouTube’s listed codec support does not establish which codec is best for a particular Linux GPU, OBS build, or audience device.
- Check YouTube’s bitrate table for your selected mode. Do not copy a bitrate from a different resolution or treat it as a universal requirement.
Use RTMPS for the ingest connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP through a TLS/SSL connection. Google’s technical documentation specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint, and port 443. The endpoint and key should come from the current Live Control Room setup, not from a guessed or reconstructed URL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
If OBS reports an SSL or connection error, first check that you selected an RTMPS endpoint rather than an RTMP address and that the connection uses the documented port. HLS is also documented as a YouTube ingest option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP(S), but it has different setup and latency characteristics; use it only when your content and encoder require it.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast if that fits your workflow. Confirm that the intended scene, game audio, microphone, overlays, and capture source appear in YouTube’s preview.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room. Look for platform-reported configuration issues rather than relying solely on OBS’s indication that it is connected. YouTube’s LiveStreams API defines stream states and health information, including configuration issues: LiveStreams API resource.
- Adjust one setting at a time. If YouTube reports a problem, compare the encoder output with the platform’s resolution-specific settings and fix the reported issue, then retest.
- Test a disconnect and reconnect. Confirm how the actual channel, scheduled broadcast, OBS version, and auto-start/auto-stop settings behave when the encoder drops and reconnects. Do not assume reconnection automatically restores the public broadcast.
Keep the Linux encoder running and recoverable
For unattended operation, arrange for the chosen encoder to start after a host reboot and for failures to be noticed and handled. The exact design depends on your distribution, encoder, gameplay source, and whether the game runs on the streaming host or another machine. The platform documentation does not prescribe a universal systemd unit, FFmpeg command, or restart policy.
- Use your Linux service manager or another supervisor to start the encoder and restart it after a process failure, after testing the behavior with your setup.
- Keep logs and review them alongside YouTube’s stream-health information; a process can be active while ingest is unhealthy.
- Protect credentials in configuration and logs. Avoid putting a live stream key directly into a command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings.
- Plan for failures beyond the encoder: power loss, host reboot, game or capture failure, and loss of network connectivity all need detection and recovery paths.
- After a reboot or restart, verify both that the encoder process has started and that YouTube shows a healthy incoming stream and the intended broadcast state.
For many gaming streams, keeping the game, OBS, and encoder on one PC is the simplest capture path, but encoding can compete with the game for system resources. A separate streaming host can move that load off the gaming machine, but adds capture and operational complexity. The appropriate choice depends on the hardware and source architecture.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect or reports an SSL error | Ingest URL, protocol, port, or stream key | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; confirm RTMPS and port 443. |
| OBS is connected, but viewers do not see the broadcast as live | YouTube broadcast lifecycle settings | Check the scheduled broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior and whether a manual broadcast action is required. |
| YouTube reports stream configuration issues | Encoder profile | Compare codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for that output mode. |
| The stream becomes unstable while a game is running | Host capacity or upload path | Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, then retest while the game is active; verify stream health in YouTube. |
| The stream does not return after a host restart | Startup supervision and credentials | Check service-manager startup and logs, confirm the key is still current, and verify YouTube sees a healthy feed and the intended broadcast state. |
| YouTube ingest is healthy but the stream later stops | Encoder, host, network, or broadcast lifecycle | Correlate local logs with YouTube status and health, then test the configured reconnect and broadcast behavior rather than assuming a local restart is sufficient. |
