You can run a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live from Google Cloud Run, but a single ordinary request-driven service or one Cloud Run Job is not an indefinite streaming solution. The encoder must keep running without incoming requests, receive suitable CPU allocation, and be supervised so it can recover from failures. Google documents Cloud Run features that can support always-on and non-request workloads, but the exact fit depends on your configuration and workload. No FFmpeg container or deployment recipe has been tested here; benchmark your own media and setup before relying on it.
How the setup works
A container reads media you own or are licensed to rebroadcast, loops or schedules it, and sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live over RTMP or preferably RTMPS. Cloud Run supplies the compute; YouTube supplies the ingest endpoint and audience-facing live event.
The design challenge is continuity. Cloud Run services normally scale to zero when they have no traffic. Google’s autoscaling guidance recommends at least one minimum instance when background work must continue without requests. See Cloud Run autoscaling and the Cloud Run overview for current workload options, including always-on server patterns and worker pools. An outbound encoder that does not serve requests needs an architecture and CPU/billing configuration appropriate to non-request work; not every ordinary request-service configuration is automatically suitable. Google’s Cloud Run fit guidance also sets out workload and resource considerations.
Choose a Cloud Run workload that can keep processing
Service with a minimum instance
If you use a service for background encoding, configure at least one minimum instance so the revision does not scale to zero while the encoder needs to run. This is a scaling setting, not an uptime guarantee: instances can restart, revisions can change during deployments, and the source or YouTube connection can fail. Confirm that the service’s interface, CPU allocation, memory, and runtime behavior fit an encoder that maintains an outbound RTMPS connection.

Worker pool or other non-request workload
Google’s Cloud Run overview describes worker pools for generic workloads that do not process requests. Review the current worker-pool capabilities and limits before choosing this route. Product options and configuration can change, so use the live documentation rather than assuming a particular deployment setting remains available.
Why one Cloud Run Job is not enough
A Cloud Run Job task has a configurable maximum timeout of 168 hours (7 days), according to Google’s task-timeout documentation. That is a hard maximum duration for a task, not a promise of uninterrupted operation, and it is shorter than an indefinite 24/7 stream. A Job may be useful for bounded work or as part of a supervised restart design, but a single invocation cannot be presented as a permanent stream.

Prepare and test the encoder container
- Make media access predictable. Provide the container with the authorized video and audio files or another reliable source. Decide whether to loop one file, sequence a playlist, or schedule items, and plan how the process behaves when a file is missing or unreadable.
- Choose remuxing or encoding based on the inputs. Exact FFmpeg options depend on source codecs, the target output, and whether the media can be passed through without conversion. There is no validated FFmpeg command or container recipe for this setup; test your own image and representative playlist.
- Design failure behavior. The process should reconnect where appropriate or exit clearly on an unrecoverable error so your supervision design can detect and restart it. Avoid silent hangs that leave an instance running but no longer sending video.
- Measure resource use at the intended output. Benchmark CPU and memory using representative media, resolution, frame rate, and encoding choices. Cloud Run’s published fit criteria do not guarantee that a particular encoder and playlist will perform reliably at a chosen instance size.
Set CPU allocation and plan for continuous cost
Continuous encoding consumes resources even when no viewer request is arriving. Cloud Run cost depends on the selected CPU and memory, activity and billing configuration, runtime, region, and other usage such as network egress. Choose CPU allocation and billing behavior deliberately; request-based CPU behavior may not be sufficient for work outside requests. Check the current Cloud Run pricing for your target region and configuration, then monitor actual CPU and memory utilization. There is no supported flat monthly cost for this scenario without those inputs.
Connect the container to YouTube Live
- Create or open the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event or encoder configuration.
- Use RTMPS when supported. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends the encrypted option; copy the RTMPS endpoint supplied in Live Control Room rather than assuming the visible RTMP endpoint is the secure URL. See YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Put it in a secret-management mechanism and inject it at runtime; do not bake it into the image, commit it to source control, or print it in logs. Channel owners or managers can reset a compromised key in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Verify the ingest connection. Start with a private or otherwise controlled test event, confirm that Live Control Room receives both audio and video, and review its stream-health indicators before switching to the intended audience.
Choose YouTube encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the starting point, then select settings that match the actual source and available upload capacity. The supported video codecs listed by YouTube are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. YouTube guidance supports up to 60 fps, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that must not exceed 4 seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not use one bitrate for every profile.

- Encoder process exits: capture meaningful exit status and logs, and arrange safe restart behavior. Confirm that a restart resumes the intended playlist rather than becoming stuck on a broken source.
- Instance or revision changes: plan deployments so the new revision is configured correctly and account for the old stream ending. Test rollout behavior rather than assuming the connection survives a deployment.
- YouTube disconnects or rejects ingest: detect a lost connection, retry with sensible backoff, and alert if the stream does not recover. A working container does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Source or resource problems: monitor file access, CPU, memory, and output health. A process that is alive but has stopped producing usable audio/video needs to be treated as an interruption.
- Quota or policy issues: check the applicable YouTube rules and account status; infrastructure cannot override platform restrictions.
These are engineering safeguards to implement and verify, not built-in guarantees of a particular Cloud Run configuration.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold does not establish that a longer 24-hour stream will be archived in full. If you need a complete recording, arrange a separate recording and retention plan and test it independently of the live stream. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Stream stops when no requests are coming in | Service scaled to zero or background CPU behavior | Review autoscaling and CPU/billing configuration; if using a service for background work, configure at least one minimum instance and verify the chosen workload pattern. |
| Job ends after running for a while | Job task reached its configured timeout | Do not use a single Job task as an indefinite stream. Use an appropriate continuing-work design or a supervised bounded-task restart approach. |
| Live Control Room does not receive video | Wrong endpoint or key, connection failure, or encoder output issue | Copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the RTMPS endpoint, check secret injection and logs, then test with a controlled event. |
| Video appears but stream health is poor | Bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, CPU saturation, or network stability | Compare the encoder profile with YouTube’s current settings, inspect instance utilization, and test a lower output profile before increasing quality. |
| Stream is live but the playlist stalls | Unreadable media, source access failure, or encoder hang | Check file access and process logs, test the affected item in isolation, and ensure the supervisor can identify a process that is alive but no longer producing output. |
| Long stream is missing a complete archive | Stream exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold | Use a separate recording and retention plan if the full continuous program must be preserved. |
