To run an always-on YouTube radio stream on an Ubuntu VPS, use FFmpeg to send your audio and a static or looping visual to YouTube Live over RTMPS, then supervise the encoder with a process manager such as systemd. This can keep the encoder running through a process exit or VPS reboot, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback: the VPS network, FFmpeg, YouTube ingest, stream configuration, and channel status all matter.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoding settings and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream. No universal VPS plan size is established; test the actual machine with representative media.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube currently requires channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the creator be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Audio and visual material you are entitled to use, plus an FFmpeg build that supports the codecs and output protocol you select.
- A stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room, where you can retrieve its current RTMPS server URL and stream key.
For a radio-style broadcast, the video input can be a still image or a looping video. Choose a visual that accurately represents the broadcast and that you have permission to use.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming on the channel and confirm it meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and open Stream settings. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that configuration. Do not reuse a sample key from a guide.
- Keep the key private. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before broadcasting again.
- Use the RTMPS URL rather than an ordinary RTMP URL. Google’s RTMPS guidance requires the secure protocol, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, and port 443. The hostname is also needed for SNI authentication during the TLS handshake. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The URL and key are specific to the stream configuration, so retrieve them from Live Control Room rather than copying connection details from another broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that YouTube accepts
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, the guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate figures; the page does not state a publication year. For a radio stream with a simple still visual, select resolution for the artwork and audience rather than assuming 1080p is necessary. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream’s aggregate bitrate. Verify sustained outbound capacity from the VPS, and test whether its CPU can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate without falling behind.
Install FFmpeg and test a media pipeline
Install FFmpeg from a suitable Ubuntu package source, then confirm the installed build and its supported encoders and protocols before settling on a command. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates real-time publishing from a file using -re and FLV output to an RTMP server; that example is a protocol illustration, not a complete tested YouTube command. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.

- Place the audio and visual inputs on the VPS and confirm the files are readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Run a short test using the selected media, video and audio codecs, constant bitrate settings, and the RTMPS URL and key retrieved from Live Control Room. Adapt FFmpeg’s file-publishing pattern to your installed build and YouTube’s current requirements.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status while the test is active. Confirm that the intended audio is audible and the visual is correct before making the stream public.
- Test what happens when FFmpeg exits and when the VPS or network is interrupted. A successful start is not proof that recovery will resume the same live event.
Do not paste a live stream key into a command that may be retained in shell history or expose it in process output and diagnostic logs. Use a suitably restricted configuration or secret-handling method for the VPS, and restrict access to files that contain credentials.
Keep FFmpeg supervised and check the actual stream
On Ubuntu, systemd is a common way to start an encoder at boot, restart a process after it exits, and retain logs for diagnosis. Configure a service for the FFmpeg command and the account and file paths it needs; then verify its status and logs with systemd’s service and journal tools. Treat restart behavior as process supervision only: it does not establish that YouTube is receiving or displaying a valid feed, nor guarantee that a reconnect resumes the same event.

Monitor both the VPS and YouTube. Check the FFmpeg process, its logs, CPU load, and outbound network, alongside the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. The LiveStreams API describes stream states including active, ready, inactive, and error, and health statuses including good, ok, bad, and noData. These signals can help distinguish a running encoder process from an ingest or stream-health problem; see the LiveStreams API reference.
Plan for archives and long sessions
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. A continuous station should not assume YouTube will provide one complete replay of a 24/7 broadcast. If replays matter, plan shorter sessions with a deliberate transition, or record locally as a separate task. Check disk capacity and arrange recording rotation before leaving local recording unattended. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Clear music and visual rights before broadcasting
Use only music and visuals for which the channel has the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms say creators represent and warrant that they have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Read the YouTube Terms of Service.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects protected content, it may show a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the live channel may also need to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions.

Troubleshoot common failures
- RTMPS connection fails with an SSL error or timeout: confirm the URL begins with
rtmps, the server and application path match Live Control Room, the destination uses port 443, and the installed FFmpeg build supports the required protocol. Preserve the hostname so TLS SNI authentication can work. - FFmpeg runs but the preview is blank or unhealthy: check the selected inputs, codec compatibility, bitrate and keyframe settings, outbound capacity, and Live Control Room health status. A running process does not prove YouTube is accepting a usable feed.
- The feed stops after a file ends or the process exits: review the input and loop behavior, service configuration, and logs. Test file exhaustion and process restart deliberately; a supervisor can restart a process but does not by itself define a safe reconnection policy for YouTube.
- The VPS restarts or loses its network: verify the service starts at boot and test the recovery path on the real account and VPS. Confirm the stream is again visible and healthy in Live Control Room rather than assuming a process restart restored the broadcast.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright warning: stop and investigate the detected material. Verify the music and visual rights, and, where applicable, ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not manage an Ubuntu VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI works. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Ubuntu VPS guarantee a 24/7 YouTube broadcast?
No. It can supervise FFmpeg, but continuous playback also depends on network delivery, YouTube ingest, stream configuration, and channel status.
Can YouTube archive a continuous stream as one replay?
Do not count on a complete archive for a stream longer than 12 hours; plan shorter sessions or a separate local recording if replays are important.
