To run an FFmpeg YouTube livestream on an AWS VPS, launch an internet-connected Linux EC2 instance, install FFmpeg, copy the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then start FFmpeg with settings matched to the video and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. The VPS must sustain both the encoding workload and outbound stream; there is no single EC2 size that suits every resolution, frame rate, codec, and filter.
1. Prepare an AWS VPS for streaming
Choose an EC2 instance with enough CPU for the encoding settings you intend to use and enough sustained network capacity for the outgoing bitrate. AWS networking varies by instance type; an advertised “up to” bandwidth may reflect burst capacity rather than a guaranteed sustained rate. See AWS EC2 instance network bandwidth.
- Use an image and region suitable for your workload, and confirm it has a route to the internet.
- Allow outbound access to YouTube’s ingest endpoint in the security group and any network controls.
- Restrict administrative ingress such as SSH to trusted source IP addresses. The streaming workflow does not require opening an inbound public video port on the VPS.
EC2 security groups control traffic to and from an instance. AWS describes their behavior in Security groups for your Amazon EC2 instances.
2. Install FFmpeg and obtain YouTube credentials

sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
Package names and available codecs depend on the OS image and its repositories. Check the version output and confirm the build supports the codecs you need.
Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live event.
- Open the stream settings and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube says the RTMPS URL can be revealed with the lock icon in the Stream URL field; follow YouTube’s live encoder settings instructions.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, source control, or logs. For unattended use, retrieve it through a protected environment or an appropriate secret-management method.
Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube rather than an unencrypted RTMP endpoint when encrypted delivery is intended. Google’s ingestion guidance documents RTMPS on port 443 and explains that the hostname is required for TLS/SNI authentication: YouTube ingestion protocols.

3. Configure the stream for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use YouTube’s current table for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The listed H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube also lists stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are YouTube’s recommendations, accessed in 2026; the applicable values depend on your chosen format. See YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Setting | Starting point or rule | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMPS | Use the URL and hostname from Live Control Room; Google documents port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. |
| Video rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames corresponds to 2 seconds. |
| H.264 video examples | 10 Mbps at 1080p/30; 17 Mbps at 1080p/60 | These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, accessed in 2026, not universal rates for other formats. |
| Audio | Stereo AAC, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | Use the settings YouTube lists for the chosen stream setup. |
YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple viewer formats, but your VPS still needs a stable upload to the ingest endpoint. Test with motion and audio similar to the actual event, then monitor stream health.

4. Start FFmpeg with a prerecorded video
This illustrative command sends a local MP4 in real time and loops it indefinitely. It is a baseline for a modest 720p/30 or similar stream, not a universal YouTube preset or a tested command. Adjust the bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to match the source and YouTube’s current recommendations.
VIDEO=/path/to/video.mp4
RTMPS_URL='rtmps://<server-from-live-control-room>:443/<app-or-path>'
STREAM_KEY='<secret-stream-key>'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "$VIDEO"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at its natural playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP; at 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeconfigure video rate and buffering. The sample values are not the right choice for every resolution or frame rate.-f flvuses the container expected by this RTMP/RTMPS-style output workflow.
Do not blindly append the key to the URL if the endpoint shown in Live Control Room already incorporates it. Follow the endpoint format YouTube provides. Avoid exposing the key in shell history or process listings where practical; the inline variables above illustrate the command shape, not a secure secret-storage method.

For a live camera or real-time source
Replace the file input with the appropriate FFmpeg input device or source URL and remove -re when the input is already arriving in real time. Device options vary by operating system and source, so there is no single input command to apply universally.
5. Test the stream and check costs before leaving it running
Preflight and monitoring
- Run a representative test using similar motion and audio to the intended stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm the expected picture, audio, and stability.
- Monitor VPS CPU load and network throughput while FFmpeg runs; a stream that starts successfully may still become unstable under sustained load.
YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health. YouTube transcodes the stream for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a reliable source connection.

Budget for compute and data transfer
A continuously running stream incurs the cost of the EC2 resource while it runs, plus applicable outbound data-transfer charges and any other selected AWS resources. AWS identifies compute, storage, and outbound data transfer as cost drivers; see Amazon EC2 pricing. The total depends on region, instance type, runtime, and actual transfer volume, so check the current pricing for your configuration before running an unattended stream.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| TLS or certificate error | Wrong endpoint, hostname, protocol, or port | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, preserve its hostname, and use the endpoint’s required port (Google documents 443 for RTMPS). |
| Connection timeout | No outbound route or egress blocked | Verify the instance has internet routing and that security-group egress and other network controls permit reaching YouTube. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Encoder settings do not match the chosen format or source is unstable | Check codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, and audio against YouTube’s current guidance; repeat a representative test. |
| Stream starts, then becomes unstable | CPU is overloaded or actual network throughput is insufficient | Inspect CPU and sustained network use. EC2 bandwidth varies by instance type and may include baseline and burst behavior. |
| Unexpected AWS bill | Instance left running or outbound transfer higher than expected | Review instance runtime and outbound data transfer, then compare the configuration with current AWS pricing. |
