To run an FFmpeg-based YouTube playlist workflow as a Windows service, use yt-dlp to extract playlist media, FFmpeg for media processing, and a service wrapper such as WinSW or NSSM to launch the configured command unattended. A YouTube playlist webpage URL is not itself a stable direct media input for FFmpeg: first validate the extraction and handoff interactively, then configure the service with explicit paths, arguments, and a working directory.
Understand the three separate jobs
- yt-dlp handles YouTube playlist extraction and selection. Its documentation covers playlist options and output templates, and its FAQ describes piping output to a downstream program that can read stdin. yt-dlp README · yt-dlp FAQ
- FFmpeg processes media supplied as an input with
-i. It supports many input types, including network streams, but that does not make a YouTube playlist page URL a direct media stream. FFmpeg command-line documentation - A Windows service wrapper launches and manages the configured executable in the background. WinSW and NSSM can run ordinary applications as services; neither replaces yt-dlp’s extraction or FFmpeg’s processing. WinSW documentation · NSSM usage
The exact command depends on the desired handoff. A media player that reads stdin can use a pipe pattern like the one shown in yt-dlp’s FAQ, but that example does not establish an end-to-end FFmpeg command for every playlist or workflow. Validate the particular command and playlist you intend to run before adding a service wrapper.
Validate the command before installing a service
- Install and locate the required programs. Identify the full paths to
yt-dlp.exeandffmpeg.exe. Use absolute paths in the eventual service configuration so it does not depend on the interactive shell’s PATH. - Test playlist extraction interactively. Run yt-dlp against the intended playlist and confirm that it can access the playlist and select the entries you expect. yt-dlp documents playlist selection and playlist output templates; playlist access and extraction behavior can change, so test the exact command you plan to use.
- Test the handoff to FFmpeg. Supply FFmpeg with a valid media input using
-i, or choose a yt-dlp output or pipe arrangement suited to the downstream operation. Do not assume the playlist webpage URL itself will work as FFmpeg’s input. The yt-dlp FAQ’s pipe example is for a player that consumes stdin; it does not verify a specific FFmpeg-and-service combination. - Make FFmpeg noninteractive. Add
-nostdinto the FFmpeg invocation for background operation. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends this to prevent console input checks. On Windows, redirecting stdin toNULis an alternative. This setting does not install, supervise, or restart a service. - Repeat the test in the intended service context. A service can use a different account and environment from your terminal. Check that the account can access the playlist, network resources, executables, and any files used by the command.
The following is a configuration outline, not a universal working command: set the wrapper’s executable to the full path of the program you want it to launch, provide the arguments you validated interactively, and set an explicit working directory. The reviewed documentation does not verify one specific yt-dlp-to-FFmpeg command for every playlist, so treat the precise arguments and handoff as dependent on your use case.
Choose a Windows service wrapper
| Wrapper | Configuration model | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| WinSW | XML configuration defines the executable and arguments; the wrapper provides service lifecycle commands. | Set the working directory and service account deliberately. WinSW v3 documentation describes LocalSystem as the default service account and the configuration directory as the default working directory. WinSW XML configuration |
| NSSM | Configure the application path, arguments, and startup directory through its command-line or GUI setup. | The application path is required. Pay attention to argument quoting and startup directory; NSSM describes attempts at graceful shutdown of the monitored application and subprocesses on service stop. NSSM usage |
Install and operate the service
WinSW
- Create the WinSW XML configuration with the executable, validated arguments, working directory, and intended service account. Use the XML configuration documentation to check the available settings: WinSW XML configuration.
- Use the WinSW v3 wrapper’s documented lifecycle commands to install and start the service. The CLI documentation also covers stopping, restarting, and checking status: WinSW CLI commands.
- Confirm the service status and inspect the wrapper’s logs and Windows Event Log where available.
NSSM
- Configure the full application path, the arguments that passed your interactive test, and a startup directory. NSSM documents both command-line and GUI configuration: NSSM usage.
- Install and start the service using the NSSM workflow, then verify that it starts under the intended account and can reach the same resources as in your test.
- Use the wrapper’s stop and restart controls when managing the service; NSSM says it attempts to shut down the monitored application and its subprocesses gracefully when it receives a service stop.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the input. Confirm that the input is an accessible media stream or file, not merely a playlist webpage URL. Test yt-dlp extraction separately, then validate the chosen handoff to FFmpeg.
- The command works in a terminal but fails as a service. Check the service account, permissions, network access, and working directory. Replace relative executable and file references with absolute paths, then reproduce the command using the same account and working directory where possible.
- The process starts and then exits. Check the exact arguments and quoting, wrapper logs, and Windows Event Log where available. Run the command interactively again to determine whether the failure is in extraction, media processing, or service configuration.
- FFmpeg appears to wait for input. Use
-nostdinfor background execution, or redirect stdin toNULon Windows. This only prevents console input checks; the wrapper remains responsible for service lifecycle. - Playlist extraction stops working later. YouTube extraction and playlist access may change. Re-test the exact current yt-dlp command interactively and adjust it before relying on the service wrapper.
- A stop or restart behaves unexpectedly. Check the wrapper’s shutdown behavior and its logs. NSSM documents attempts at graceful shutdown, but wrapper documentation alone does not guarantee uninterrupted playback or recovery from every process failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube live stream from uploaded videos rather than a Windows-hosted FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. No computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the uploaded media as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
