To stream with FFmpeg from a Docker container on a VPS, give the container access to your media, have FFmpeg send it to YouTube Live’s RTMPS ingest URL with your stream key, and run FFmpeg as the container’s foreground process. Add a Docker restart policy for recovery, but treat it as a way to restart—not fix—failed streams. The right FFmpeg options depend on the input and whether it needs conversion or filtering.
How the stream gets from your VPS to YouTube
The path is: a media source on the VPS or another reachable location, FFmpeg running inside a container, and YouTube Live receiving the output. Docker isolates the process and can restart its container; it does not choose compatible codecs, supply the stream key, or ensure the media is suitable.
FFmpeg’s general command structure is inputs and their options followed by outputs and their options. Its -c copy option copies encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. This can avoid transcoding and preserve the input’s encoded quality, but it is only appropriate when the source streams and output requirements are compatible. Stream copy cannot apply filters and can fail when the destination container needs information the input does not provide. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Before you create the container
Confirm the media and processing you need
Identify whether FFmpeg will read a file, a network source, or another live input, and whether you need to loop a file. Check the media’s video and audio codecs and the output requirements. If the source is suitable, stream copy may work; if you need resizing, overlays, audio changes, or codec conversion, you must decode, filter and re-encode with settings suited to the workload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those choices affect VPS resource needs. The official documentation cited here does not establish a universal CPU, memory, bandwidth, or provider-plan recommendation. Sizing depends on the input, output resolution and bitrate, whether FFmpeg re-encodes, stream duration, data-transfer terms, and audience geography.
Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream URL and stream key, then configure FFmpeg to use the secure RTMPS endpoint. Treat the key as a credential: do not place a real key in a public image, repository, example, or log. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for the current endpoint and setup.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for supported requirements, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS is not a blanket requirement for ordinary RTMP-compatible streams; consult the YouTube HLS guide if your workflow needs it.
Put the input where the container can read it
If the media is a file on the VPS host, make its host path available inside the container with a bind mount. Docker bind mounts are read-write by default; mount the media read-only if FFmpeg only needs to read it. Docker recommends the --mount form in its container run reference. For a network input, ensure the container can reach its source and that any required credentials are handled securely.

Run FFmpeg as the container’s main process
Build or select a container image that has the FFmpeg version and codecs your workflow requires. Start FFmpeg directly as the container’s foreground process, with the input and any input options before the output options. This lets Docker observe FFmpeg’s exit status and apply a restart policy.
There is no single safe universal command for every source: input type, looping behavior, codecs, filters, output format, and stream-key handling vary. Use FFmpeg’s documentation to construct the command for your media, and avoid embedding a real key in a Docker image or committing it to source control. Keep any key-bearing runtime configuration private, and avoid exposing it through logs.

Choose recovery behavior and limit network exposure
Select a restart policy for your operating needs
Docker provides no, on-failure[:max-retries], always, and unless-stopped restart policies. Use unless-stopped when an operator’s explicit stop should remain in effect after a daemon restart. Choose always when the container should return after it stops, subject to Docker’s documented manual-stop behavior; use on-failure when restarts should depend on a nonzero exit, optionally limiting retries. Docker recommends restart policies rather than process managers for starting containers; see Docker’s restart-policy documentation.
A restart policy does not diagnose or repair an invalid key, unreadable input, unsupported codec, or network problem. Inspect the container logs and restart count, then validate stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A repeated restart without addressing the underlying error can leave the stream unavailable.

Do not publish a port unless the container needs inbound access
A stream-only FFmpeg container usually sends outbound traffic to YouTube and needs no inbound published port. Docker documents that publishing a port without specifying a host IP—for example, -p 80:8080—binds it on all host interfaces by default. If you add a monitoring or control service, publish only the required port and address, and account for Docker’s firewall behavior as well as your VPS provider’s firewall. See Docker’s firewall documentation.
Choose between the main setup options
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Choose based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media processing | Stream copy (-c copy) |
Decode, filter, and re-encode | Codec compatibility, need for filters or conversion, CPU requirements, and quality impact |
| YouTube ingest | RTMPS | HLS for supported requirements | Required codec or HDR support and YouTube’s current ingest instructions |
| Container recovery | unless-stopped |
always or on-failure |
Whether manual stops should persist and which exits should trigger a restart |
| Media access | Host bind mount | Network-accessible input | Where the media lives, persistence, and permissions |
| Network exposure | No inbound published port | Specific published control or monitoring port | Whether inbound access is needed and which interfaces should be reachable |
Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay live
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Check container logs for an unreadable input path, missing file, unsupported format, or malformed command. Confirm the host path and bind-mount destination.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the current RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room, check network connectivity from the VPS, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection errors. Do not publish the key while troubleshooting.
- Stream-copy output fails: Confirm the input codecs and output requirements. If they are incompatible, or the stream needs filters or conversion, revise the workflow to decode and re-encode rather than assuming
-c copywill work. - The container keeps restarting: Review its logs and restart count to find the original exit cause. The policy only repeats the start attempt; it does not correct bad media, credentials, codecs, or connectivity.
- A monitoring service is unreachable: If you intended inbound access, check the published port’s host-IP binding, Docker firewall behavior, and the VPS firewall. Do not expose a port on every host interface by default when a narrower binding will do.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than operate FFmpeg and Docker on a VPS, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
