Start with H.264 over RTMPS, measure upload where the Pi will run, leave about 20% bandwidth headroom, and test the event in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What the Pi 4 and YouTube can handle
Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B’s hardware H.264 encoding capability as up to 1080p30. That is the Pi’s published hardware-encoding ceiling, not a guarantee that every camera, operating-system image, FFmpeg build, or software configuration will work at that resolution. YouTube accepts higher resolutions, but that does not mean the Pi 4 can encode them in hardware.
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, its recommended bitrates are 14 Mbps at 1080p30, 8 Mbps at 720p30, and 4 Mbps at 480p30. It lists minimums of 5 Mbps, 3 Mbps, and 0.4 Mbps for those respective formats. These are service-side recommendations, not required starting values or a promise that your Pi and connection can sustain them. YouTube’s live encoder settings also include stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz among its recommended advanced settings.
For many mobile connections, the practical setting will be below YouTube’s recommended bitrate. A stable lower-bitrate stream is preferable to choosing a higher setting that exhausts the available upload capacity.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Check your equipment, input and software
- Raspberry Pi: Confirm it is a Pi 4 Model B. Raspberry Pi specifies 5V DC through USB-C with a minimum 3A supply; an unsuitable supply can cause instability.
- Operating system and tools: Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS for normal use. Package names, camera support and available FFmpeg encoders can differ on other Linux images and across builds.
- Video source: Decide whether you are streaming a video file, Pi camera, USB webcam or capture device. You will need the correct device path or file path and compatible input options.
- Audio: Decide whether audio comes from the source, a separate microphone or no audio. The FFmpeg input mapping must match your setup.
- Mobile connection: Check coverage and plan data allowance at the actual location. If using a phone hotspot or tethering, test in that arrangement.
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation says that, when available, rpicam-vid uses hardware H.264 encoding. It also documents FFmpeg/libav use for encoding audio and video and streaming over a network, plus bitrate and I-frame-frequency controls. That is a useful path to investigate for a Pi-camera workflow, but it is not a ready-made YouTube command. Confirm your installed camera software and how it exposes the source and encoder before building a command. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation and the Pi 4 Model B specifications.
Measure mobile upload and choose a bitrate
Test sustained upload speed at the Pi’s intended position, at times and under conditions representative of the event. Download speed is not a substitute: mobile networks often provide less upload capacity than download capacity, and signal congestion or interruptions can change performance. Carrier name alone cannot predict the result at your location.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Connect the Pi as it will be connected during the stream, including the intended router or phone hotspot.
- Run repeated upload speed tests at the streaming location, including during busy periods if those overlap with your planned broadcast.
- Use the lower, repeatable upload results as your planning basis rather than the best single result.
- Keep roughly 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving this margin. See its streaming tips.
- If the connection is variable or the headroom is inadequate, lower the resolution and bitrate, then test again. Do not select 1080p30 at 14 Mbps simply because YouTube lists it as recommended.
The total includes audio as well as video. For example, if you configure a video bitrate of 3,000 kbps and audio of 128 kbps, the encoded stream is approximately 3,128 kbps before transport overhead. The figures are illustrative; select values based on your own measured connection and test results.
Create the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to set up or select the live event in Live Control Room. Labels and layout can change; use the current controls shown in your account.
- Choose the event’s visibility and scheduling settings, then open the stream settings to obtain the current ingest endpoint and stream key.
- Use RTMPS when the available YouTube endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it. Copy the endpoint and key from the current Live Control Room rather than relying on an old URL.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public code, screenshots, chat, or a shared command history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
Check YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for supported protocols and event controls.

Build and adapt an FFmpeg command
The following is a template, not a command guaranteed to run unchanged on every Pi 4. Replace the input, encoder, mapping, endpoint and key with values supported by your installed system and the current event. Hardware encoder names and options vary between FFmpeg builds; verify available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders and consult ffmpeg -h encoder=NAME for the encoder you intend to use.
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v h264_v4l2m2m -b:v 3000k -minrate 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://CURRENT_INGEST_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY"
INPUTcould be a file path or an appropriate device input, but webcam, capture-card and camera sources often need different input formats and options. For a live device,-remay not be appropriate; use input-specific guidance for that device.h264_v4l2m2mis an example encoder name only. It may not be available in your installed build or may not support the expected controls. If hardware H.264 is unavailable, check whether software encoding can meet your chosen resolution and frame rate without overloading the Pi.- The example video rate is 3,000 kbps, with a 128 kbps audio target. It is not a universal recommendation. Keep total bitrate within measured upload capacity with headroom.
- At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. Adapt frame rate and GOP together to preserve that interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
-map 0:a?makes audio mapping optional in FFmpeg, but an absent or separate audio source may require different mapping and input options. Check logs and confirm the resulting stream includes the audio you intend.- The RTMPS URL must follow the current endpoint format from Live Control Room. Keep the real stream key private; the text above is deliberately a placeholder.
For a Pi camera, investigate the installed rpicam-vid FFmpeg/libav workflow and its hardware H.264, bitrate and I-frame controls. Do not assume a camera command or device path from another Raspberry Pi OS release will match yours.

Test the preview, picture, sound and stream health
- Start with a private or unlisted test event, if appropriate for your use, and send a representative source with the motion and audio you expect in the real stream.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video appears, the aspect ratio and frame rate look right, and audio is present at a usable level.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and FFmpeg’s output for bitrate, connection or encoder errors. A command that starts without an error is not proof that the stream is stable.
- Let the test run long enough to expose mobile fluctuations, then repeat at the location and time you expect to broadcast.
- Monitor the connection during the event. YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream; lower bitrate or improve placement if health deteriorates.
Estimate mobile data use for the stream
Approximate sent data from the configured total bitrate and planned duration. For a quick estimate, multiply the bitrate in megabits per second by the number of seconds, then divide by 8 to get megabytes. For example, a total stream bitrate of 3.128 Mbps for one hour is approximately 1,408 MB before overhead. Actual network and carrier accounting can vary, so check the allowance and terms for your own plan.
Jio’s consumer help explains that higher-resolution playback uses more data and how to adjust playback quality in YouTube; its approximate playback-use figures are not measurements of outbound live-encoder traffic or current plan allowances. Keep those separate from your upload estimate. See Jio’s video data-use help.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube reports weak or unstable stream health: Recheck upload at the Pi’s location and during the event period. Reduce resolution or total bitrate, preserve headroom, or improve the connection’s placement.
- No incoming stream in Live Control Room: Verify that the event is active, the current ingest endpoint and key match, the key has not been reset, and the Pi can reach the RTMPS service. Review FFmpeg’s connection output.
- Black picture or missing video: Confirm the input path or device, input format/options, video mapping and encoder availability. Inspect FFmpeg logs and test the source locally before sending it to YouTube.
- No sound: Confirm the audio source is present, mapping selects the intended stream, and the chosen AAC encoder and sample rate are supported. If using a separate microphone, configure it as an additional input and map it deliberately.
- Encoder option or device errors: Check the installed FFmpeg build and available encoder help; do not assume an encoder name or option from another OS image applies.
- Unexpected interruptions or restarts: Check the power supply, temperature, mobile link and device logs. Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4’s ambient operating range as 0–50°C; enclosure and workload conditions can affect actual operation.
- Data runs out sooner than expected: Recalculate from the configured video and audio rates and full session length, allowing for overhead, and verify the mobile plan’s allowance and tethering conditions with the operator.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to running the Pi continuously: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping, playlists and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo for details. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
