To loop local video files in OBS and stream them live on YouTube from a Windows laptop, add OBS’s VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream with its stream key, then start streaming and complete any required go-live step in YouTube Studio. The setup is the same in India as elsewhere; your laptop’s encoding capacity and tested upload connection determine which output quality is practical.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source requires VLC; OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Prepare local video or audio files you have the rights to broadcast, and decide their playback order.
- Make sure the laptop and internet connection can sustain the chosen encoding settings. Test the connection rather than assuming a particular resolution will be stable.
This method loops media files stored on the laptop. The documented OBS workflow does not establish that a YouTube-hosted playlist URL can be used as a direct playlist source.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you want to broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, choose + > VLC Video. If prompted, name the source and confirm.
- In the source properties, add your local media files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents it as on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want the files to repeat in a fixed order; enable it only if you want playback order randomized.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene. OBS’s documented visibility behavior stops playback when the source is hidden and restarts it when shown, so do not hide it if playback needs to continue.
- Check that the video appears in the preview and that the intended audio is audible and routed to the correct OBS audio track.
OBS handles playback; it loops the playlist inside the scene. Separately, OBS encodes that scene and sends it to YouTube.
Choose streaming settings your laptop and connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee that a particular Windows laptop or Indian internet connection can hold a stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, checking audio and representative motion, and watching stream health and messages during the broadcast. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Output mode | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; test whether your connection can sustain it. |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; test whether your connection can sustain it. |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; test whether your connection can sustain it. |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; test whether your connection can sustain it. |
YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. In OBS, select settings supported by your encoder and use YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended connection protocol.
For a practical preflight, play a representative section of the playlist, including its most visually active content. Confirm the laptop encodes without trouble, audio stays in sync, and the upload connection leaves enough headroom. If stream health reports problems, lower output quality or bitrate and test again before relying on the stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live, then create a stream or select an existing one. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, or enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio if configuring the connection manually.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or show it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- For a scheduled broadcast, start sending from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Click Go live there when prompted. Sending video from OBS and making the broadcast public are separate steps for this workflow.
Go live, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start the stream in OBS. Confirm the playlist is playing in the preview and that YouTube receives the feed.
- Check Live Control Room for the preview, stream-health status, and any messages. Resolve warnings before inviting viewers where possible.
- When finished, stop streaming in OBS, then end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not mean every longer stream will be archived.
Copyright and channel safety
Only broadcast video and audio you have the necessary rights to use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream and a warning to appear; continued use of third-party content can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and use the copyright safety checklist before broadcasting.
Separate from copyright, a channel’s eligibility and YouTube’s current live-stream rules can affect whether it can broadcast. Check the prompts and requirements shown in your own YouTube Studio account.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist will not load | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source again. |
| Playlist plays once and stops | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Files play in a different order than expected | Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order is wrong. | Disable Shuffle Playlist for fixed playback and arrange the files in the desired order. |
| Playback stops after changing scenes | The VLC source became hidden; OBS’s documented visibility behavior stops it while hidden. | Keep the source visible in the scene used for the stream and verify playback after scene changes. |
| YouTube shows no preview after OBS starts | The stream key, server connection, or selected YouTube broadcast may be incorrect, or the feed has not connected. | Confirm OBS is connected to the intended stream, recheck the key and server details in Studio, and follow Live Control Room status messages. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or connection | The selected output may exceed the laptop’s encoding ability or the upload connection’s reliable capacity. | Run a speed test, lower bitrate or output quality, and retest with representative motion before going live. |
| Scheduled stream is receiving video but is not live to viewers | The scheduled broadcast may still need explicit approval in Live Control Room. | Wait for the preview, then click Go live in YouTube Studio when prompted. |
| Stream is interrupted after copyrighted material appears | YouTube detected a third-party content match or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. | Stop or replace material unless you have the required rights and any necessary allowlisting; review YouTube’s copyright notice. |
