SteamOS does not include a documented native Android-app compatibility layer. A community option for running Android apps on Steam Deck is Waydroid, which starts a full Android system inside a Linux container. It is separate from Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games, and it does not guarantee that every Android app will work.
What runs Android apps on SteamOS?
Waydroid is the practical route described in the available Steam Deck setup guidance. Its documentation says it uses Linux namespaces to run a full Android system in a container on GNU/Linux, rather than translating each Android app in the same way Proton handles Windows games. By contrast, Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on SteamOS. The two tools serve different purposes: Proton is for Windows games; Waydroid provides an Android environment in which Android apps may run.
What to check before installing an Android app
APK architecture
Check whether the APK supports the Steam Deck’s x86_64 architecture. Waydroid warns that APKs found online may be built only for ARM, in which case they will not work on x86_64. The fact that an app has an Android APK is not enough to establish compatibility. Waydroid’s install-and-run guide

App services and requirements
An app may depend on Google Play services, DRM, anti-cheat, or other components that a general Waydroid setup does not establish as supported. The cited setup documentation does not provide an app-by-app compatibility list or guarantee Google Play certification, streaming behavior, or game compatibility. Verify the requirements of the specific app before relying on it.
Desktop Mode and maintenance
The Steam Deck community bundle’s documented installation model requires Desktop Mode and a working graphical session. It is a community-maintained setup, not a turnkey feature or a Valve support guarantee. Check the bundle’s current guidance for compatibility with your SteamOS userspace and build before installing. Install an APK:
waydroid app install xyz.apk -
Launch an installed app from the desktop menu, or launch it by Android package name:
waydroid app launch com.foo.barSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Replace xyz.apk and com.foo.bar with the APK filename and package name for your app. These commands describe how to install and launch an app; they do not show that the app itself is compatible.

These are the bundle maintainer’s stated requirements, not specifications or support commitments from Valve. The README presents Android 13 as the normal supported choice and Android 16 images as experimental. It reports successful Android 16 boot, operation, and shutdown with Waydroid 1.6.3 on a particular SteamOS Beta build, and lifecycle unreliability with Waydroid 1.5.4 on a particular Stable build. SteamOS updates can affect software installed outside Flatpak. Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ warns: “In addition, anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update.” The FAQ explains that Flatpak installs software on the writable portion of storage; do not assume that an update leaves every part of a community setup untouched.
Before installing, updating, or repairing Waydroid, consult the current instructions for a bundle compatible with your SteamOS build. Back up important Android data before updates or repair steps.
