You can run Android games on a Steam Deck with Waydroid, an independently maintained Android container project—not a Valve-supported feature. Success depends on finding a Waydroid bundle compatible with your SteamOS build, using an Android app that supports the Deck’s x86_64 architecture, and checking whether the game accepts the runtime and its controls.
Can you play Android games on Steam Deck?
Yes, using Waydroid, which runs Android in a Linux container. For Steam Deck, the documented installation route is the community-maintained SteamOS Waydroid Bundle. It is not provided or endorsed by Valve, and a working container does not guarantee that a particular game will install, sign in, respond to controls, or perform acceptably.
Steam Deck Verified, Playable, and Unsupported labels apply to games in Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility program. They do not indicate whether an Android game works in Waydroid; see Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility information.
Check SteamOS compatibility before installing
The installer depends on a bundle compatible with your SteamOS version and configuration. The project prefers an exact match for SteamOS version, build, and ABI. Some cross-build combinations may work when ABI and Binder conditions match; if the setup uses an external Binder module, its recorded kernel release must match the running kernel. Check the project’s current compatibility information and releases before proceeding, since availability can change.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The project lists Stable, Beta, and Preview branches as supported only when a compatible bundle is available. Development and main builds are experimental. Its README lists these prerequisites for a new installation:
- Steam Deck Desktop Mode with a working graphical session.
- A sudo password set for the
deckuser. - Internet access.
- At least 10 GB free under the home filesystem.
Install Waydroid and choose an Android image
Follow the current installation instructions for your SteamOS build in the community project’s README. Do not assume an installer bundle for one SteamOS release will work on another. The project’s ordinary install options are Android 13, with or without Google Play, and Android TV 13 variants. Android 16 is offered in a separate experimental test environment, so it is not the routine choice for a first setup.

The project reports different lifecycle behavior for Waydroid 1.6.3 on SteamOS Beta 3.8.25 and Waydroid 1.5.4 on SteamOS Stable 3.8.16. Those are project-reported configurations, not a general performance comparison or a guarantee for current releases.
Install a game and check its architecture
Use the Play Store if you selected a Google Play image, or install an APK from a source you trust. Waydroid documents APK installation with this command:
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
waydroid app install xyz.apk
Replace xyz.apk with the APK’s actual filename. Before relying on a sideloaded app, check that it supports x86_64. Many Android APKs found online are built only for ARM and will not run on the Steam Deck’s x86_64 environment. Waydroid’s documentation explicitly warns that ARM-only APKs “will therefore not work on x86_64”: Waydroid: Install and run Android applications.
Do not treat ARM translation as a universal workaround: the available documentation does not establish that it makes every game compatible. An APK can fail because of its architecture even when Waydroid itself starts normally.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Handle Google Play certification and sign-in separately
A Waydroid image with Google Play may report the device as uncertified on first launch. Waydroid provides a self-certification procedure for that situation: Google Play certification. Certification only addresses that status; it does not guarantee that a particular game will appear in the store, install, accept the environment, or allow account sign-in.
Test touch, controls, and performance in the game
Compatibility is game-specific. Launch the title and verify that its menus and gameplay are usable with the Deck’s inputs, that account and game services work, and that graphics and stability are acceptable during sustained play. A game designed around touch may not map cleanly to physical controls. Waydroid offers a persist.waydroid.fake_touch property for selected package names when an app treats mouse interaction differently from touch; this is a configuration option, not proof that the game’s full control scheme will work. See Waydroid property options.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There are no controlled frame-rate, battery-life, or thermal measurements established here for named Android games across Steam Deck LCD and OLED models and current SteamOS builds. Avoid assuming a game will run well based on the container alone. For a meaningful comparison with a Steam version or another way to play, check app architecture, game-service and account acceptance, input usability, stability and graphics on your exact Deck configuration, and maintenance after updates.
Recheck the setup after SteamOS updates
SteamOS updates can affect the environment Waydroid relies on. The bundle project provides an automatic repair path and says it stops if no compatible bundle is available. Another community setup notes that SteamOS updates replace the root filesystem and may remove packages it installed: SteamOS Waydroid Bundle and EmuDeck’s Android setup notes. Keep the Android image and any important user data backed up, and follow the recovery instructions for the installer you used. After an update, check that a matching bundle exists before attempting repair or reinstalling.
